Last week we caught up with the Gekirangers while they teamed up with GoGo Sentai Boukenger! This week we get back to normal episodes and dark secrets. GenJyuKen, the ultimate power, what is it's true purpose? What is Long's goal? As Mele obtains a new power, and Rio contemplates one, how will the balance shift? Retsu will face a dark reflection, Ran will face an angry mother, and Miki will unleash her power?!
So Let's Watch, Gekiranger 37-39!

Gah, posted this in the wrong Let's Watch thread:
I'm going to be honest, I fastforwarded through all the scenes with Ran and the wedding arrangement stuff in 37. I really hate that stock plot. Also, Mele is hot. Literally, in her new form. |

Mele is always hot, and although I don't care for her Genjyuken form it still looks better than the mess that is Rio's Genjyu griphon form.

I forgot we were supposed to watch Gekiranger vs Boukenger last week and I ended up watching 37-39.
Retsu and Gou's episode was pretty cool.So far we haven't really seen the fact they're brothers being addressed.Having two Rangers being siblings can make for some good plots and I'm glad they could develop their relationship a bit more for a filler episode.Seeing Retsu's actor's brother show up to play evil Retsu was hilarious to me.I couldn't stop thinking of his appearance in Akibaranger and the whole joke they made of that fact. The Ran marriage interview ep was good for a couple of laughs.Seeing everyone trying to keep her around by acting like other suitors was pretty funny.I like that they brought up that Ran is "captain" again, but I wish it was more apparent in the series so it means a lot more. Miki is really freaking bad ass.We got that small preview of what she could do in the first episode and it sucks we haven't seen much of that since. It bums me out that she has the potential to be a Gekiranger, but seeing there's only 5 of them I guess she doesn't get that chance. The fact that she fought toe to toe with Mele and piloted SaiDaiOh totally upped her awesomeness in my book. Although I really love bird designs, I can't really get into Mele's GenJyuKen form. It's jarring to see her go from a chameleon to a phoenix. Also, even though Long says that the underlings obviously aren't gonna be as powerful as his group of 4 or as Rio soon will be, it kinda downplays the power of GenJyuKen when Miki(a non-Gekiranger with undoubted skills of her own) can beat one of them. Also a bit of a tangent, but related.I've been watching Jungle Fury as part of my personal PR catch-up and I'm enjoying the hell out of it.As far as copy and paste adaptations go,it's pretty good.It adds enough of its own spins to the Gekiranger story to not feel like it's treading the same ground.Maybe it's just watching Gekiranger and it helping fill in some gaps to the story, but it's a neat little companion piece to its source material. |

Marriage interview. Meh. Nothing special beyond the Rin scenes.
I didn't fastforward like Switch did, but outside of how strikingly similar to Urataros possessed Ryotaro Retsu looked when wearing glasses, there wasn't much to say. For the next one, I love sibling rivalries. So much fun. I enjoyed that Gou knew when something was up with his brother. It's charming and endearing. Also, fun fact, Retsu's mirror copy was played by Retsu's actor's twin brother. Otherwise, not much else to say. As for the final one, watching Miki pilot SaidaiOh was hilarious. Everyone has a breaking point, and for Miki, it was using children (Including her daughter) as a part of their plans, and it was awesome to see another fight scene involving her. Leopard Fist deserves it's own special mecha. Anyway, the Rin scenes were cool. Mele become Phoenix fist, replacing her Rin with Genki, which was neat. And watching Rio fight Suugu was neat.

I like the marriage interview episode. Why do you think I used that picture for the front page article? Of those generic types of episodes it's one of my favorites! I like how it reinforces the fact that Ran is essential to the team, not just the token female. The Retsu/Gou episode bored me a bit. But Miki kicking ass with Saidaioh was AMAZING. Why they didn't have her be Geki Oranger or something along the lines of a Deka Swan is beyond me.

It's a travesty that Miki never got to be a ranger, but I do understand why.
She is a mother, and she doesn't want to be in constant action and possibly leave Natsume without a mom. It's unfortunate because Mele could only beat her after transforming into her Phoenix form, telling us how skilled she is, but she cares too much for her family to put herself in constant danger. It's rather touching.

*Sighs* Oh well. Miki would have made the series a lot shorter if she was a ranger, anyway...

Rather late to the party due to a con and post con catch up, but better late than never right. Most of what I'd say has already been cover, so I'll just bring up how I like the designs of the GenJyuKen. Now, I'm not talking about them being gold or their actual suit designs(IMO, the GenJyuKen are very forgetable outside of the generals and Rio), but their thematic designs. Each of them is based of the Chinese Zodiac, but they use a mytological animal to represent the style. So instead of ox, minotaur; instead of horse, unicorn; and instead of chicken, phoenix. And to top it off, the generals are also doubling for the four cardinal gods. Mele being Suzaku, Sanyo being Genbu, Suguu being Byakko, and Long being Seiryuu. I love the design motif within the design motif.
