Shukuenshinobi has been known to be pretty anti-MMPR most of the time. He does like SPD as his favorite PR show. I don't see many people that like SPD as their #1 favorite. People either think it's okay or bad.

That was my other guess. I don't know why though. The most current Sentai series rely on nothing but toy gimmicks to tell their story, are full of CGI'd mechs that must have a battle every episode even when there is no reason for there to be one, and they are so damn childish that it feels like they don't want anyone over the age of 4 enjoying them. Yes, I know Sentai is geared towards children, but everything through DekaRanger had far more maturity to it that made it easy for anyone to get into. Now, aside from a few specifics, every series is over the top silly with little substance to go with the style.

It started with Zyuranger, but it didn't kick off until after Timeranger. Timeranger was a very popular show back in 2000 and Time Fire's popularity most likely help made 6th rangers more common. Every Super Sentai show after 2000 had a 6th ranger expect for Gekiranger and Go-Busters.

I'm unsure about that. While I haven't been able to muster up enough interest to continue with Go-Busters, based on how no one can ever speak of that series without going on how "It's so much more mature than other Sentai," I don't think it's fair to call every recent series as over the top silliness. Yes, Kyoryu and TQG fit in your descriptor, I think we need more than 2 consecutive series before citing things as a dark age (So to speak) for Sentai.

In fact, I'm doing a panel at NDK this year on Sixth Rangers and will be touching base on this. Not to mention I have a great montage being put together of the redundancy of the sixth ranger premier episodes. Rangers getting ass kicked, sixth appears, kicks ass, rangers drool over their amazement of him. Only a few shows tend to have a different way of pulling it off, which includes DragonRanger, ShinkenGold, and sadly enough, ToQ #6. |

MagiRanger, Boukenger, Go-Onger, and Goseiger also fit this bill. I'm not saying they cannot have silly moments, but there is being silly and then there is just over the top comedy.
Actually, I'd say GaoRanger is where the shows started to just have the sixth ranger become the average every day ranger. Even with Time Fire, he was still not in every episode every time, and when he did, he was still badass the majority of the time. With GaoSilver and beyond, the sixth rangers became just another ranger in the crowd who would suddenly get his ass beat just as much as the regular team. It is kind of pathetic since the sixth ranger was meant to be the all powerful one. In fact, I'm doing a panel at NDK this year on Sixth Rangers and will be touching base on this. Uses pulleys to control Builddaioh like it's Bossborot from Mazinger Z 4. Highly unorthodox fighting style 5. Wears orange 6. Was a kaijin since birth Also, I hope your panel turns out great. Looking forward to hear how it went ^^

I can understand not being your cup of tea, but I don't quite "get" direct hatred on Zyuranger. If it weren't for Zyu, we wouldn't have MMPR, if it weren't for MMPR, I fail to see now America and several (not all) other countries would've been introduced to Toku/Sentai. Not to mention, we wouldn't be here right now. Probably on a site dedicated to Tokusatsu in general, but not one as diverse as putting together fans of PR, Beetleborgs, VR Troopers, Kamen Rider and such. I always see it as forefather status, Zyu. It has it's wrinkles, but it's to be respected as it brought many so much enjoyment in many ways.
