So...This wasn't very good. Should've been a 2 parter.
This episode moved just as fast as last episode, and that's not a good thing because I don't know, or care, about any of our protagonists. I can't get invested in Lucky dangling over a pit of smelted metal because I don't give a fuck about him. I can't get invested in Naga and Balance's brief betrayal between each other because they were just introduced 6 minutes ago and I know fuck all about them. It seems Orange is getting an episode all his own, so that's nice. However, that won't make things better because, despite being 3 episodes in by then, we still have so little on our cast due to their piss poor introductions that the majority of the episode will be dedicated to introducing and establishing Sasori Orange, so it won't fix the actual problem. This series is pushing things. Lucky is still as obnoxious as ever, which is making wanting to keep with the show even more difficult. I don't want to dislike the series because the premise and visuals are nice, but I have to be honest in saying that I don't even want to watch the next episode, because I fully anticipate more of the same... ...The bit where Lucky shows how to construct the weapon with Balance was fun.

I generally agree with the last few posts. I still really like the ideas this show is going for, but the execution is sorely lacking and it mostly comes down to the characters. Lucky is just goddamn terrible; he's some horrible eldritch abomination of Ban's screaming, Daigo's plot powers, and the guy from Ninninger's catch phrase. I'm not averse to luck being a super power - Longshot is one of my favorite X-Men - but when it's used as the sole driver of the show's plot it becomes highly problematic. Couple that with the character being an obnoxious void of charisma and he becomes highly grating even before he starts yelling "Yuusha Lucky!" every third sentence (five times this episode, six counting the movie trailer - yes, I counted). If I drop the show before episode five it's going to be entirely Lucky's fault.
Not that the other characters are much better. Naga and Balance got some basic development here, but the other four are still completely blank slates. I have no idea what any of them are like outside of some very, very basic ideas: Hammy is rude, Lupus is... I don't know, loyal, maybe? Yellow makes food puns. Black is... there. At least the new guys have basic personalities, even if Balance is almost as annoying as Lucky. So yeah, the cool concept for the show is completely wasted on these bland and/or obnoxious characters. Thankfully we still have the commander and Orange Ranger left to go, because adding even more characters will surely help bring the existing ones into better focus. I've got a couple more episodes in me before I feel like I won't be able to muster up the energy to care, so maybe things can still turn around. |

Yeah, this episode was a bit rushed, and really needed to be a two-parter. I have to admit though, I actually enjoy most of the characters. I really like the Naga and Balance duo, and how Balance was just exploiting Naga in the beginning. I will agree that Lucky's "Yuusha Lucky!" is a bit...... grating, but for some reason I haven't been that bothered by it (1000X better than "if-you-dare-say-the-weather-is-bad-I'll-scream-how-dare-you-mess-with-this-planet" Yamato). Also, I thought that I was really going to dislike Lucky's luck streak, but honestly I think it makes sense. Like they said, how are they going to travel the entire universe to find the rest of the Kyurangers? Lucky's luck-ex-machina helps that along (I'll admit, it's dumb, but it's better than them just stumbling onto a planet and just "happening" to find more Kyuranger members). That being said, I think that it's a bit early to judge on how the entire season will be, and I really like where this is going.
I also really like that the villains have corresponding constellations as well, hopefully we might see some villain Kyurangers in the future. |

There's a huge difference between the two. Yamato's was a 'pre-asskicking one-liner' before any fight. YOSHA RAKIII has been criticized for being said what? 15 times so far? And Lucky's entire gimmick is screaming that. See also Onari from Kamen Rider Ghost for similar criticism

Yamato only said that line once an episode, and sometimes it wasn't even him.
Lucky drops "YUUSHA LUCKY!" once every 5 minutes. We had 2 "Don't mess with this planet!"in Zyuohger by episode 2. It was basically part of their role call. We've had over 8 Yuusha Lucky's already. Trust me. It's going to get old. Very old. Considering finding other members, here: Tenbin Gold and Hebitsukai Silver were thieves, right? Have them partaking in thievery and Lucky wanting to apprehend them. The rest of the team basically says "No, other Kyurangers are more important than a couple of robbers," but Lucky goes down anyway because fireball red and confronts them. Have Balance recognize him, and try to convince him in helping steal the jewel with a fake Robin Hood act, and proceed as normal. Of course, there'd have to be a series off coincidences (Why were they in X system, at that specific planet, to find those two), but it would be a hell of a lot better than literally throwing a dart through a projector, going to that planet, and just randomly bumping into them and immediately declaring them as the next Kyurangers.

Somehow, this episode did a pretty good job at winning me over on this season. Maybe I just needed time to adjust to the new characters and setting; but everything seemed to work better. I also thought the duo of Naga and Balance was very cool. Lucky is still pretty annoying but I think this episode was a step in the right direction despite its short comings.

Wow, for a show I was expecting to immediately get loved to bits by everyone the way Ex-Aid has, the reception around here seems rather negative. I can sort of relate, but I don't think the flaws have been working hard enough against the show for me to not enjoy it. This episode was also a HUGE improvement on last week, in my opinion. To elaborate:
- YOSSHA RAKKI~ - I think the pacing this time around was a lot nicer. The story still moves fast, but it had a single plot instead of like three, which is the important thing. - So, one of the things I actually really liked about the premiere (that I guess I'm somewhat alone on) is that it gave me a solid idea of who everybody was. Just basic personality traits, but they were clearly displayed. This week I think did a really great job of letting the viewer get to know Balance and Naga. I like how the both of them, much like Garu, got their little arc with Lucky, and unlike him, it wasn't just five minutes of a larger episode, so it worked way better. The whole twist of having the human(ish) guy be the one without emotions is kind of cute, and between that and Balance's faulty morals, they're both set up for series-spanning character arcs on top of the development they got just this episode. Pretty quality stuff. - YOSSHA RAKKI~ - The first two or three episodes of a Sentai tend to have a bigger budget so time will tell but I am absolutely ADORING the show's commitment to being an honest-to-gosh space adventure show. That is beyond cool to me, and I really hope we don't just settle down on Earth once the Kyurangers are assembled. The setup with a MotW governing each planet under Jark Matter's control suggests they do intend to keep up with this, though, which would make me so happy. - I didn't mention it last week, but I actually kind of adore the ending theme for how borderline avant-garde it is. I may miss my eagle puns and lyrics that actually thematically connect to the show, but I can definitely live with this for a year. - YOSSHA RA- *ahem* I think Lucky is fine. I genuinely thought he was pretty lame last week but after thinking about it some more and seeing this episode, I really think, outside of that catchphrase, complaints about him are a little overblown. A little. I think it's absolutely fine to have a cute little moment where he jump-starts the plot by accident, and him immediately happening into our two new recruits (who were making quite a bit of noise at the time, mind you) is the kind of dramatic convenience that happens in basically any show, so I can't get too worked up about it. If he's still lucking his way into good things during major plot events I'll be pretty upset, but as of right now, I'm cool with it. I also like his interactions with Naga this week, showing a side to him that isn't JUST a screaming idiot. So yeah, I think that about covers it. This show actually has quite the tough act to follow with how much I ended up liking Zyuohger, but I'm getting more into it now. Hopefully it'll only get better from here. YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH!

Oh, my bad.

I did like this episode more as well, felt way less cramped. Still a little too fast-paced, but now we're just going at Mach 2 instead of light-speed.
Lucky's still kind of annoying, but, like the pacing, they're toning down his madness a little bit. Plus... other than Garu, who seems to be the only one who thinks of him as "the boss" at this point, the rest of the team just seems to be... tolerating him. He's just the weird new guy at the moment, who's also not too bright. Also, Balance and Naga are actually pretty funny. I dunno, I smiled at their antics. Definitely fearing them getting the shaft when it comes to screen-time, because I at least want to see more of them. Anyway, Champ getting some focus in the next episode alongside Stinger's debut should be interesting. I'm just going to assume Raptor's going to share her episode with another one of the team as well, and you can quote me on that. |
