I think these were the subs I was watching. To give an example, is Rio’s name translated as “Leo”?

Yeah. In the "Wildranger" version of the subs, he's Leo.
Not really the worst translation, since it is accurate.

Watched through episode 42 of Gingaman. Some scattered thoughts:
- Okay, first off, can I just mention that Bull Black is one of my favorite designs in Sentai? Like, wow, what a cool suit. I want a V-Cinema buddy cop movie with him and Wolzard or something. I don't know how that would make any sense, or what motivation Toei would have to make it, but a guy can dream. - I love how with the addition of Giga Vitus and crew, the mecha fights now follow a distinct formula of "form Gingai-Oh", "Gingai-Oh gets its paint slightly scratched", and then "Oh no, this guy's way too tough for us to handle! Giga Vitus!". To be fair, I guess it would be pretty unexciting for the new guys to just chill in that waterfall 24/7. - My theory about Hayate getting the best episodes still stands. 36 was all about him and Yuuta's dad saving the day and it was amazing. - Also, similarly to the Hayate theory, anytime there's a two-parter, it's awesome. - And a quick shout-out to the obligatory "monster that isn't really a bad guy" episode. I'm a sucker for those plots and this one was great. Plus I like Hikaru a lot so it's even better! - I'm starting to appreciate Ryouma a lot more. There's a nice subtle arc to him that I wasn't really noticing at first. He's still as quick to act as ever, but instead of being pure bravado, it's more genuine confidence now. Well what'd you expect? It's not like Gekiranger stops being the s*** just because you aren't watching it.

Black Knight is an awesome suit. I love it so much. Always been a fan~
I love how they call the Giga mechs, too. You could lightly nudge GingaiOh and they'd be screaming for GigaVitus Sucks that GigaVitus itself participates in a whole 3 fights. And I know that Geki is always good. It's just that it sparks up that childish glee that has me smiling like an idiot (Or Jan~) while watching it EDIT: Episode 4. I forgot about the poisoned fight with GekiTouja. It's great. It's so great to watch. I love it when mecha fights are like this. The 5 vs 1 handicap fills you with tension and the action is intense. I also love that they didn't actually win. They merely got an antidote. And that's the best part. They didn't win. Xia Fu couldn't match with Rio, and the Gekirangers were leagues below the Venom Fists. It was only through sportsmanship did they survive. I love it~ I was just gonna watch the show at my leisure and gush about it at random intervals, but eh. I've done the episode recaps for Jetman, Dekaranger, and Gingaman, so why not do it for my personal favorite, too? I know how things are gonna play out in the end, so it's not exactly a rediscovery, but hey. My depression kicked in full force last month, so why not just have something to enjoy this month?

I'm nearing the end of Gokaiger, love this show, it just fires on all cylinders for me. Really fun and gets me into that Super Sentai zone. And I love the way they humanize Gil a little bit there, the whole way things go there is just really entertaining. He's a nutty evil villain, but seeing the perspective of him and his peers is almost Gundam-ish, really like how they characterized the villains there. Dark comedy in a way. And has been one of my fav sets of heroes too.
I also watched episode 3 of Liveman, picking up where I left off a couple years ago, very cool episode! I think this'll be my choice for second Super Sentai series to finish after Gokaiger. Fun going back and forth between new stuff, retro stuff, lighter shows, darker shows, all good. |

Gekiranger 5 and 6.
The first two of the Five Venoms fall, and in a great decision, they fall to Ran and Retsu, respectively. I love it. First is Kademu and his 1000 punches, who takes a loss because he just punches randomly, while Ran's Cheetah Fist is technically slower, but she's far more precise and accurate. When applied in an actual fight, she was the only one actually landing hits. Great~ Next is Moriya, who can walk on walls. Shame he forgot he also had that super poison *Coughs* Oh well. They were in suit the whole time. Guess he needed skin contact to apply it. Still, Retsu beat him because he was fighting for feeling, not solely to win. Not quite as good as Ran's fight, but still, it was cool. Very gravity defying, but cool nonetheless I loved seeing both Ran and Retsu training to tackle their objectives. Catching falling leaves to display both speed and accuracy, and training while basically grappling a building to get adjusted to fighting on a vertical scale. Meanwhile, Rio and Mele are searching for the Madoku/true poison, a special technique that one of the 5 venoms know that grants the ability to restore life. I already know who it is, but still, it's cute to see Mele all pouty during Moriya's fight because she knows he's a bit of a loser and he doesn't have it Also, foreshadowing for Retsu's brother, who doesn't appear until the early 20's. Man, I love this show~

Up to Jetman 15. Maybe it's because I'm spoiled by Geki and Zyuoh but this feels like a considerable downgrade now that I think about it. Characters aren't as likeable, Raita could just as well be a Kyuranger character from how little screen time he gets in comparison, I don't like Jet Icarus AT ALL, but it's still very enjoyable to watch

And now I'm through with Gingaman. It was... something.
I'm not very inclined to argue with the opinion that it's mostly just pretty average, but I also don't think that's necessarily an insult to it. I wasn't anywhere near as enthused by it as I wanted to be, but I feel like that's sort of my fault. I don't think I'm burned out on Sentai, but after the triple threat of Carranger, Gekiranger, and Megaranger all one after the other, Gingaman couldn't help but feel like a downgrade, despite my massive bias towards Yasuko Kobayashi. There's a lot to love here though. That's the thing I can't stress enough. If Gingaman seems like a show that you'll enjoy, you probably will. I could totally see it being somebody's favorite, even. It's got a very warm, laid-back atmosphere, a fairly likable cast of heroes, solid world-building, some pretty funny episodes, some pretty epic episodes, and basically nothing notably bad anywhere in sight. It's a really frustrating feeling. I like Gingaman. I enjoyed it. But I wish I enjoyed it a lot more than I did. As it stands it's probably the biggest contender for my least favorite Sentai, which, even if it's by default, isn't exactly a glowing review. I kind of knew going in I would be "sacrificing" my opinion of Gingaman watching it when I did (especially considering the next show I plan to get around to is liable to ALSO be really great), but it's still kind of a bummer just how much that seems to be the case. Ultimately, I think for me Gingaman was mostly a victim of poor timing. If this were my first Sentai or one I watched after a decent break from the backlog I'd probably love it as much as anything else. Someday I might have to give it another watch and see if my outlook on it improves.

I don't think your opinion on Gingaman will be changing, even after a break.
When it comes down to it, it's just your standard Super Sentai. That isn't a bad thing, but it's just doesn't come to life like other shows do. It has it's moments (I love the part where Hyuuga realizes he still has Earth Power), but it never really reaches a high point and stays at that point. You said it yourself that you wanted to like it more than you did. I feel if you go back and watch it again, you'd basically just be forcing yourself to find all the "Overlooked gems" the series has to offer.
