Since SHOUT! Factory has released Jetman on DVD and is now available for streaming on www.shoutfactorytv.com, what are your thoughts on this series?
This is the first Pre-Zyu Sentai Series to be released in the States, and it was something that has history with Haim Saban in trying to get Sentai adapted in the West! Many people view it as good, some are against it, others question it. What do you like about the Jetman themselves, the Mecha, Vyram, the Dimension Beasts? Is there enough of a story to invest in? Does the series show growth in the characters and end in a manner that was satisfying? Did the Gokaiger Tribute Episode live-up to your expectations or not? Perhaps the most difficult question to ask is: What is your opinion of Gai, a.k.a. Black Condor? Is Gai truly one of the most infamous Sentai Ranger Characters in Franchise History or is that an over-hyped opinion that doesn't age well? Had things turned-out differently, would Jetman have worked as the First Adapted Sentai in America by Haim Saban? Could Saban have succeeded with the Power Rangers Franchise by starting with Jetman? Another question is: Could Jetman still work as a Power Rangers Team? Could Comics or other Media incorporate Jetman in some capacity? Opinions will certainly vary! Share them here! |

So much questions...
Yes, Jetman has a lot of good points for itself. It's the good kind of "dark", the Vyram are geat vilains, the characters interactions were brought to a new level, it tooks its time to start and didn't unleash the usual formula right off the bat (the first giant mech doesn't assemble until ep.5). In the "meh" section the MotW were kind of underwhelming or too goofy with the tone of the show. Like the insta-noodles monster... Well, I guess it helped bring balance in some way. Personnaly, I like Gai dynamics with the others. Sometimes he's a jerkass (with an heart of gold) by design, that just make the story more interesting. Jetman is a product of its time and from a different culture, trying to push controversy about his machism or short temper ~30 years after is a vain effort. The Gokaiger tribute was okay. I liked Jetman enough to read the sequel manga ,btw. Power Ranger Jetman would not have work as good as Zyuranger I think. You'd lost dinosaurs motif, and as I said some monsters designs were dull. The vilains would have been almost impossible to use without heavy retooling.

I liked the suits and opening and... That's it personally
Gai is a horrible person who really made me decide "Yup, I have no desire to continue watching". You can have a ranger who's a dick to the rest and make them grow. But what I believe is fucking wrong is having him grab someone who's clearly upset and force himself on her (Kaori in this case). The audience is supposed to feel bad that the girl he likes doesn't like him back but I'm just thinking "Does this fuckhead not know the definition of consent?" It could have worked but I feel it wouldn't have been the success MMPR ended up being due to the whole dinosaur motive, personally, I'd prefer giant robot dinosaurs instead of giant birds Jetman can't work as an adaptation today, the show is nearly 30 years old meaning re-using Sentai footage absolutely cannot work, which is one of the main reasons this franchise has done so well. That being said the comics and stuff are fair game, those appeal to more hardcore Power Rangers fans too meaning those people could possibly go "Oh I know what Jetman is!"

Not entirely! He is a flawed and dynamic character, and that usually amounts to some decent, and fictional, drama! Would I act that way in real life? No! He once stared at a female cop's legs and then ran the Red just so she would pull him over and talk to him! What the Hell kinda guy would do that in real life, save for a total sleaze? Is the audience expected to like Gai? Hard to say. I can't authoritatively say what Toei was thinking in '91. Gai is the "Imperfect-Bad-Boy-Who-Has-His-Moments" type! Luckily, the other Rangers, the Commander, and the Vyram themselves are also interesting people in their own right. I do think that P.R. could use Jetman, but some new footage would be required! Old footage could be used if it was done right, like the type of Sentai footage that is played on a monitor to showcase "Here is an all-new team of Rangers who fought to save the Multiverse years before you were all born!" type of thing. A Netflix-Exclusive Series where you don't have to worry about TV-Ratio differences might work, or the Comics. There is the questionable continuity of the "Supersonic Rangers" based on Fiveman (which isn't the direction I would've taken)! For those who question Gai, I can only suggest an attempt at analyzing the Series knowing that Gai has more than a few problems! Focus on the Good, not the Bad or the Ugly! I'm not trying to excuse the characterization, but it is a "What-You-Get-Out-Of-It" Series! |

Jetman for me will always fall into the average category. To me it just isn't the hyper amazing masterpiece of a show I see people within the fandom make it out to be. The drama isn't all that great and it gets repetitive quick, characters are pretty meh which is a shame because Ako and Raita are amazingly fun to watch but get little development. Story is meh and hiccups a good bit. But it is still fun to watch because, well, Sentai. I've only ever been bored by two Sentai and even then they had some entertainment quality to them, and that's what Sentai is to me. The fun scrappy toku that I can almost always enjoy.
As for Gai, yes he could have been handled better in quite a few aspects. By today's standards he does not hold up and even back then he probably pushed a lot of buttons. But it could be argued that how he was written along with a lot of the soap operay bits is what made it catch on (there is some truth to why moms would apparently watch it with their kids, and it wasn't for the glory of Cup/Ramen Dimension). Overall though, yeah, things could have been thought through a bit more. So yeah, Jetman isn't terrible but it isn't the great show it has a reputation as being. I would still like to buy the DVD set, but it will more than likely be one I get on sale compared to the other ones where I'll buy them almost as soon as I find them at a store (save for Zyu, Oh, and Car. I want Car, meh on Oh, and I'm pretty sure most of you know my thoughts on Zyu).

I think Jetman’s pretty bad, honestly. The ranger suits are cool, as are some of the villains, but a lot of the designs are just boring. Especially their mech. The villains are pretty lame too, they’re just some rather basic evil conquerors, and dear god that love triangle was painful to sit through.
I get that they were kinda going for a Cyclops/Jean/Wolverine vibe with it, but two of the people in it were friggin assholes, and the third had the personality of a cardboard box, I just could not bring myself to care about anything going on with it. Not to mention the show tended to focus on that instead of Blue and Yellow, the two team members I actually gave a crap about. Gai himself is terrible and I greatly enjoyed the ending, even if it did come off as one last selfish action from this vile SOB. That being said I would love to see Jetman appear in the comics, I want to see all the Pre-Zyu teams get adapted in some way. The suits are solid, so c’mon, why not? |

Why would anyone question a legit release of this series in the US? That makes no sense? Who are these so called fans?

New to Sentai in general, this and Zyuranger are the ones I started with and ~40 episodes into Jetman, here are my thoughts:
it’s jus crazy to think this was a kids show, even in 1992. The level of violence and abject horror in some of these episodes is kind of extreme. The heroes are mostly cool (though Raita gets shafted too much. I know he and Ako are basically afterthoughts to the love triangle but even Ako got some pretty bangin focus episodes). The Vyram are...interesting. They all share the same goal of conquering earth and defeating he Jetman, but there’s such a petty rivalry between them all. Seeing them bicker and sabotage each other makes for a very interesting villain dynamic. The monsters and mecha aren’t very well designed compared to what came later, but the plots behind them have all been great so far. Except for I guess Tetraboy lol but they can’t all be winners. The story bounces around from multi-part epics to one-off adventures and I like most of them. There’s enough going on that I rarely get bored. The characters have a decent chemistry with each other (except for poor, poor Raita, who has a pretty cool implied friendship with Ako but never really seems to fit in with a lot of the drama. When he admitted to a crush on Kaori it felt like a desperate ploy by the writers to figure or what to do with him) Gai is a great love-to-hate character when the story begins and he slowly develops into a mostly good person by about the series halfway point. He’s such a bastard lol. What makes him work imo is that none of these characters (except Ryuu) asked for this. So having someone like Gai be one of the people to accidentally get birdonified adds a layer of realism to the shows premise. Not everyone is going to be a heroic person. And seeing them have to work trough those growing pains was satisfying. But what makes Gai compelling to me is that, outside of being a bastard, he’s motivated by strong, individualistic values. In the beginning these are expressed by being a jerk and a womanizer, but later on as e became more well rounded they helped to both complement and foil Ryuu’s idealistic, “mission first” attitude. And it’s his parallel growth with Ryuu that makes him work so well. There’s no way Jetman could have had the same success as Zyuranger did as a basis for Power Rangers imo. Zyuranger’s suits and action scenes just oozes production values compared to Jetman. And as mentioned, the dinosaur theme got off the heels of Jurassic Park. Could Jetman still work? I would love to see Boom try their hand at a comic book “adaptation” that fits into the larger PR canon. The comics seem to have an easier time dealing with dark and violent subject matter which was at the center of so much of Jetmans conflict. Also if they really wanted to they could have Bulk be the Yellow Jetman since Raita was a little stocky even in costume lol. One final thought: Commander Aya is the perfect woman. Gosh, she really is great. |

It feels almost sad to mention this, but the guy who played Radiguet has passed on in reality!
Whether you love or hate the series, I think Radiguet was the type of Sentai Villain that ALL Sentai Villains should "aspire" to be! http://ukiyaseed.weebly.com/ukiyasee...as-passed-away |
