I'm very interested to see how the manufacturer tackle this fragility issue. Quote:
What I have NEVER stated nor implied: - "If you so much as look at the elbows they'll break!" - "Literally decrying the SHF line as doomed over one bad release, like Bandai haven’t been making these figures for years." - "The simple fact that some broke, therefore all must break forever into the future." - "Bandai will intentionally release time bombs going forward with no regard to feedback or reports of breakage." - "Every figure ever to use this joint design are doomed to fail." - "Every single OOO figure would have that problem." - Manufacturing or material defects have no part on this breakage issue. What I have stated or implied: This breakage issue is probabilistic issue. Figures using the new joint system will have higher rate of failure. My main focus here is not the typical crack-type of failure, but the most extreme one, the nasty one, the catastrophic failure, the systemic collapse: LIMB DISMEMBERMENT. Here's my line of reasoning: NEW JOINT SYSTEM = SPLITTING THE OLD JOINT SYSTEM INTO 2 SMALLER COMPONENTS = SMALLER COMPONENT SIZE & HIGHER COMPLEXITY = REDUCTION IN STRENGTH = HIGHER FRAGILITY = HIGHER PROBABILITY OF SYSTEMIC FAILURE And then I ask myself these questions: 1. Does a 2,5mm plastic rod have the strength of 50% of a 5mm plastic rod? 2. If in a parallel universe the SHF SS OO used the old joint system and had a failure rate of, say, 0,01%, would the failure rate of the new joint system be lower or higher than 0,01%? It would be a very very bad exercise of prudence on my part if I answer those 2 questions with "yes" and "lower". To those asking about the pro-contra, cost-benefit analysis, risk/reward ratio, upsidedownside, etc of the new joint system, my conclusion is best described by this question: "Will you bet your entire fortune for a chance to win a Rider bike?" Quote:
Reason and rational deduction tells us, however, that in the face of so many reports of breakage Bandai will adjust their design/production going forward, especially as the SS line is heavily promoted as one of their most high-end product lines. It's silly to assume theoretical figures that haven't even been announced yet will suffer from breakage when we have only one release with these new elbows so far.

Me shouting down at everyone who disagrees with me? I'm just a random faceless person posting his opinion in the form of text on this forum, not politician shouting his next disastrous policy at your ears. Several other people have disagreed with me and none of them resorted to ad hominem attacks. Or perhaps would you rather see me agreeing on everything on this forum? Well, it's not that I can stop you from doing what you will do. |

Anyway, I have been scouring the Nyafuu threads and JP Twitter to see if any Japanese customizer had modified their SS OOO to use body-kun/regular elbows and haven't seen any. :/

Oh, the joy it would be if someone were to introduce such a 3rd party add-on. |

We've even acknowledged that yes, the new joint is an issue, whether it be QC related or otherwise. All we've been saying is for anyone interested in the figure to be careful, as well as "let's wait to see." Meanwhile you've kept going on and on and on. Even saying "Oh you've just been lucky, they WILL break." (paraphrased) tldr; Chill out. |

Wow, I had a lot of catching up to do with this thread since the last time I was here. It seems there are some people who are in disagreement in regards to the severity of the new joint system incorporated in the new SS line. I have had my SS OOO’s since it was released and have been posing it pretty often and have had no qualms with the new joints even when replacing the forearms with the claws out multiple times. For those of you who spent your hard earned $60+ on this figure only to have it break, I am truly sorry that it happened to you and I have had those experiences in the past. But to go to the lengths that I have read in this thread about “increased fragility”, the new joints being a “blunder” and the hysteria that has followed. I think it’s being blown out of proportion and those who want this amazingly beautiful (ok I’m biased because OOO is my favorite rider and this is sooooo much more accurate than the original SH Figures version) but are afraid because of the new joint, I say you should get it, but be careful.
Are the joints more fragile? Inherently so. But considering how others have posted about other elbow/hip joints breaking, or wrist joints snapping, I don’t think it’s as big of an issue as some are making it to be. Increased fragility has been going on since back in the days when figures have 5 points of articulation. As toys evolve, and we add more moving parts for the sake of articulation, of course things would be more fragile. Through the updates we get, there will be things that work and things that don’t. eg. Kabuto, Dark Kabuto and Gatack’s different wrist joints. Maybe these won’t last either, or maybe they’re the next step in getting figures that we can pose more lifelike. If Bandai were to just keep making things the way they are, and not innovating, we would not have gotten the SS line, with better proportions, better screen accuracy, better articulations, and overall a better albeit pricey figure. Toys would stagnate and other companies would just start to copy them and they wouldn’t stand out as the most advanced, detailed, and articulate figure out on the market. With how little I’ve actually heard about the joints breaking, I’m surprised at how strong these opinions are. And in response to Taste-Toys’s having “visible” cracks, I am going to have to disagree with you there. It is the lighting that is shining on the new angular joint that makes it look that way. If you have the SS OOO, you would know. I understand if people are worried that their OOO or future figures will break, and hearing “just be careful” isn’t what you want to hear, but it’s really not as bad as some are making it out to be (except for the ones that broke, which may just be the case of unfortunate QC issues). OOO’s joints are nowhere NEAR as bad as some of the other manufacturers out there with joints not as advanced. And if you honestly cannot fathom ever having a figure with “increased fragility”, I hear Sofubis are extremely sturdy and affordable. In more recent news. I. AM. SO. HYPED. FOR. LATORATA!!!!!! (ankh chan and his greeed arm looks awesome and I'm glad that they finally show pictures of the arm on the figure!) |
