That should really be a picture of Zyuran or something up there, but I simply refuse to open up the year with anyone other than Magine, okay? It's like my own little New Year's resolution! ...Besides, Gaon is in this one, so it even kinda connects to the whole cat thing, sorta. Really, you'd think the obvious point of focus here would be the innovative idea of giving a guy from the next Sentai an extended cameo (although I guess Kamen Rider has already done something like this a couple times), but if you thought that too, than just like me, you were probably severely underestimating how committed Zenkaiger is to its own insanity. Like, Don Momotaro shows up, he fights a bit, shills a fresh new toy, all that good stuff. Sure. It's cute and all, but it really is a cameo at the end of the day. If we're talking about which red hero is truly in the spotlight here, then without a doubt, it's Zyuran. He's completely carrying this entire episode, and carrying the whole team while he's at it, because that's just the kind of cool geezer he is. I have a feeling I don't need to waste too much time explaining all there is to like about Zyuran. He's the old man who's still got it, whether "it" is an endless supply of the best quips in any episode, a relatively chill attitude that balances out the rest of the cast, or the supportive and determined nature to pull everyone together when the going gets tough. We all know him very well by now, and clearly Koumura does too, because it's hard to think of another episode that leverages so much of his character so effectively throughout. I mean, just for starters, the crux of Zyuran saving the day here is him getting all crotchety about it being too warm, which is brilliant. He gets that dramatic slow motion shot of him getting out from that table, as though it were this impressive feat of heroic willpower, when in actuality it's the exact opposite, and he's just too sweaty to put up with it anymore. He manages to do what seems impossible simply by getting moderately annoyed enough to call it quits. And then there's like, the bizarrely down-to-earth Zyuran shopping montage? And then he comes up with a plan to shake everyone from their lethargy by grooving to the theme song? This is like the best episode ever! I mean, most of them are, in a show this consistently amazing, but still. It's impressive that the actual selling point of this one ends up feeling overshadowed by Zyuran doing a bunch of stuff that's entirely mundane at face value. Like, I seriously thought it was more compelling just watching him go shopping than it was watching the new guy, and it's not even like I didn't find the new guy compelling! That's just kinda the power of this show's stellar writing after most of a year, I suppose. Supremely enjoyable characters, esoteric and absurd premises delivered with heart, a dash of intrigue with the antagonists (can't forget to mention Stacey suffering even more here!), the most creative roll calls ever, ... yup, Zenkaiger's still got it all, just like it did last year. That peach dude is gonna have a lot to live up to when his own show starts.

Ohhh, when Gege possesses Stacey, he says this body's not bad, either.
So that could mean that bird form isn't Gege's real body. Last edited by IndigoArms; 01-11-2022 at 06:28 AM.. |

I've suspected for a while that Gege is some sort of spy working against the baddies. He's been maipulating the big bad from the start, manuvering the other two against each other, keeping the baddie from having any confidence in his underlings whatsoever and pretty much been sewing chaos from the start.
Whoever he really is, he's not at all who he appears to be. Doesn't mean he's actually good, though, just working against the same enemy. |

Man, Zyuran really is just the best, and this episode proves it in spades. As someone who overheats incredibly quickly too, I can completely feel where Zyuran is coming from
His triumphant moment of crawling out from the heated table was amazing, and his efforts of motivating and saving the others were great. Even Gaon had to admit he had total dad energy. I loved it I also enjoyed the end of the episode, where he was relaxing, and the others were fighting over getting to help him. I'm so used to episodes with scenes like that being about the hero getting cocky for saving the day, but here, nawh. Zyuran was chilling, and everyone else just wanted to do so as thanks. A fun scene~ Also a nice couple moments for Vroom, too. Realizing that diving head first to learn something royally screwed his team and he has to be somewhat more cautious. Good on ya. Gege's final scene with Stacey has me incredibly curious as well. Honestly, this episode did so well that Don Momotaro didn't really even matter to me. It was neat, but go back to the Red ranger I actually care about

It feels like it's beem forever since the last character focus episode! And I'm happy the new year for Zenkaiger opens on one starring my favourite of the Kikanoids. Everyone appreciate Zyuran right now!

Well, that's one way to get people out of a kotatsu.
This episode definitely solidifies Jyuran as my favorite character in Zenkaiger, with Kaito a close second. The man just gets too hot and tries to get everyone fired up by playing the Zenkaiger theme to everyone. Now that's a true super cool friend! Besides that, this episode was hilarious and gave us our first look at DonBrothers, which I'll get to in a minute, from just a simple remark that leads to a perfectly comically-timed villain appearing with the same power, that turns people into cats (kind of fitting for the new year). It's especially funny how Gaon looks like he has a beard, or Kaito drawing faces on the oranges, and of course, more crazy role calls. Even more hilarious in how the Zenkaigers fight while still in their respective kotatsus, giving us a fight where the heroes fight almost completely stationary, which was a really fun and brilliant fight. Now Don Momotaro definitely appears to be a flamboyant battle hungry type of guy, but he was rather fun to watch, and the CG for the mech wasn't too bad either, wish I could say the same for the bike, but I'm still wary of how well they can do a whole season that's CGI heavy. But overall, it's neat how we got an all-red mech in Zenkaiger, and it's fight wasn't bad at all. Looks like Gege is doing some Kingdom Hearts shenanigans behind the scenes, and our boy Stacey is going to be out of the picture for a time. Looks like they'll either make Gege the final boss, or pull a Kiramager and have Barishtara break out of the wall or something. Next Week: Stacey is a birdbrain. |
