Well, that's sad news. Super Sentai has always been a stable series, without reruns, unlike the older Rider and Ultraman. On the other hand, they're leaving on a good note: Gozyuger isn't the best, but it's still a great show. At least it didn't feel like the franchise was dying. As for the future, I'm almost certain that the TTFC specials and more will continue to appear. At the very least, Hurricaneger will definitely appear 30 years later. As for the rest, I have a few options:
1) Super Sentai will continue, but with a different address. 2) A rebranding will occur, removing unpopular elements of the franchise. 3) A completely new tokusatsu show. 4) The return of the Metal Heroes (most likely in a team version). 5) Nothing (but temporarily). Also, if Toei is planning a break with TV Asahi, how will this affect the fate of the remaining Super Hero Time franchises? It's quite possible that the internationalization of the KR isn't a long-awaited development, but a necessary measure for survival. And it's quite possible that it will lead to a reduction in the number of episodes. Overall, I don't think this is the last big news. In the meantime, I'll continue to enjoy watching the latest shows showcasing their pioneering work. P.S. Now I'll definitely have time to watch Goranger. |

Obviously, once I finally caved and watched a Sentai series last year, they knew that the Super Sentai project had achieved its final and most difficult goal, so there was no reason to continue making shows. I apologize to the longtime Sentai fans for inadvertently destroying your franchise!

After a strong 50 year run childhood for Japanese Gen X is officially over.
Jokes aside, this is heartbreaking. I got into Super Sentai about a decade ago when I started watching unofficial dubs of Jetman, Liveman, and Sun Vulcan on Facebook. Power Rangers is a cornerstone of my childhood and by extension Zyuranger. Super Sentai and Power Rangers have been attached at the hip since the debut of MMPR in late 1993. My suspicions that Sentai would wane when Power Rangers started to become inconsistent and deviate from their source material in the 2010s. The nail in the coffin being Hasbro announcing its divorce from Super Sentai licensing and ultimately putting Power Rangers on ice. Though Sentai has been having its own issues with ratings and I myself haven't been happy with the direction Sentai has been going over the past 5 years or so. A rebranding might help, possibly a soft reboot. But there are nearly 50 individual Sentai teams Toei can exploit. While I do not want to see Japan become like the U.S. in terms of defaulting to the most popular/recognizable team (a la MMPR), I think Toei could benefit from reviving some older Sentai IPs as spin off sequel series. Perhaps adapting the Jetman sequel manga or revisiting Liveman or Gingaman. I do hope that the future is bright for Super Sentai despite this disappointing news. |

I feel so indifferent about this.
“Is Sentai good? Yeah. Can I live without it? Yeah.” That’s pretty much it. Although I very much fancy the idea of this being a planned stunt for either global freedom or to appear “fresh” with “new ideas” and “experimental visions” (Spoilers: It’s still five people in color-coded spandex with a giant robot, such creativity, much wow) until they can just return to the franchise with a big revival show. If that’s not happening then well, time to start from the beginning. If I go with the first season and watch a single one every year there’s enough Sentai to carry me into the grave. |
