I think the logic behind such statements is that Kamen Rider is clearly entering the international arena, and the same is expected of his partner show. And the agreement that allowed the creation of Power Rangers could hinder this. Although, as far as I remember, Super Sentai was broadcasted in Asian countries, and there were no objections from the Power Rangers copyright holders.
But I also think Power Rangers had an influence on Toei's new concept. After all, for some reason the new franchise is called Project Red, not Red Hero. This means they'll use the same abbreviation, PR. On the other hand, it rejects the idea of Hasbro's rights to the franchise. After all, just using PR instead of the full name even once is grounds for a lawsuit. Even if it's unwinnable, it didn't stop Hasbro from suing DC over Bumblebee's nickname. It might seem like I'm arguing with myself here, so I'll summarize. My opinion: Toei took the Power Rangers into account when creating Project Red. But only as a concept, not as a competitor or a threat to their plans. At that time IPs weren't as massive as the star power of a celebrity, and many corporations, even domestic ones, were licensing out their IPs to syndication or competitive networks. Now we are knee deep into the 21st century and China is a growing superpower, and Japan is a strong regional power with global soft power. The MCU has completely changed the perspective on IP consolidation (noting the messiness of spreading out IPs to competitors like Hulk to Universal Studios, and Spider-Man to Sony Pictures). The internet has completely changed how international distribution works. Streaming has also created a bubble of IP consolidation and leading to corporations merging to stay afloat. Every other adaptation of a Toei toku property has failed, allowing Toei to consolidate their properties and have greater control over their IPs when trying to market them abroad. The only hold out in this consolidation is Super Sentai. Since Hasbro holds the licensing rights to Power Rangers and permits them to create rangers and teams without using Sentai footage, this puts Toei in a bind because 1) they cannot market Super Sentai to North America even if its a season not yet adapted, and 2) Toei loses necessary funding for their Super Sentai productions from the licensing fees charged to use Sentai footage to adapt it to Power Rangers. Thus not only do they lose a vital market to sell their IP to, they have a reduced budget for Sentai going forward. With Sentai on the decline and losing licensing sales Toei had no choice but to cancel Super Sentai for the time being. While Power Rangers is not the only reason why Super Sentai got put on ice for the time being, it is a factor that cannot be ignored. Last edited by acdcguy; Yesterday at 05:57 PM.. |

You know, it occurred to me that this new project is probably bad news for new heroines. Sentai always had to inlcude at least one, but Kamen Rider is inconsistent with them and there's no guarantee we'll get any in whatever RED is.

Oh, I've already accepted that female representation in tokusatsu is only going to continue to get worse for years to come. I think Bandai would much rather herd girls over to Precure and Aikatsu instead.

That's a valid concern, and I don't want to get my (or anyone else's) hopes up too high. But on the other hand, Sentai and Rider both have histories of always making the red rangers and main riders male, enough that producers are probably wary of backlash if they made a season with a woman as the central protagonist. Project RED doesn't have that baggage, so it's possible this could open the door for more heroines not just in general but in the leading role!

![]() Also, every Rider show during Reiwa had at least one female Rider so far...? Maybe aside from Gavv, I actually don’t know if Jiip counts. Probably not. |
