Finally caught up with Ultra Galaxy Fight NGH. It's been cool so far, I like all the little callbacks to each Ultraman's series (like Geed's catchphrase and him mentioning AIB, or Ginga quoting Zero). There's a pretty sweet "passing of the torch" feeling when Taro stares off wistfully as the NG Ultras charge into battle.
But the standout of this series so far has definitely been Ultraman Ribut. Like SengalBoy said, as a Malaysian it feels awesome to see our country and fanbase acknowledged by TsuPro, and in such an awesome way too. I love how Ribut is portrayed: competent and seasoned, not as a comedic sidekick the way his origins (the children's program Upin & Ipin) might suggest. He definitely reminds me of Captain America too (who fittingly enough is my favorite superhero). I think Ribut might be my favorite NG Ultra after Zero and Geed, and I need a spinoff miniseries now! In other news: I've caught up to Ep 10 of Taiga and boy, is this show grim as hell. It's really reminded me more of Seven than Taro so far, and it's definitely lacking the sense of optimistic camaraderie that's marked most of the NG shows thus far. I'm curious to see how Tregear's machinations pan out, though. On the Showa front, I stopped around Episode 26 of Ace because that's as far as I could find subs for. But hey, with official English releases dropping soon, it looks like I won't have to wait long. |

I'm enjoying Galaxy Fight too. It's nice to see all the new generation Ultras in one place but I kind of wish there was just a bit more of it (yes it's not done yet but the pacing is already clear enough). Seeing all these characters interact and the more Earth-based ones adapting to all the space stuff is fun.

Yeah, agreed, they're definitely short snippets. I just watched the latest one and it was fine; basically just the NG Ultras pairing off against their opponents. Cool that the Ginga theme seems to be unofficial NG anthem. It is a pretty badass song, though I'm partial to Zero and Geed's themes as well.
Also, have Color Timer and Genm Corp stopped doing Eng subs for Taiga? I'm watching Ep 17 on the official Ultraman page on YouTube now, but my Chinese is a little rusty. Anyway, the Ep 15-16 two-parter was pretty great. Tregear finally revealed his evil plan of corrupting Taiga (which is...surprisingly heavy for a kids' show, though Taiga has been pretty heavy in tone overall), but of course The Power of Friendship TM prevails, and we get the debut of Taiga's new form. Which is...cool? I don't necessarily hate it, I like that the overall red color scheme is more evocative of Taro-san, but it's definitely not as unique as Photon Earth's samurai-Gundam look. The Tristrium sword does look pretty bad though; not Geed Claw-bad, but it's certainly toyetic. I'm convinced TsuPro has the budget to make more "realistic" weapons, but I'm not sure why they choose to keep them looking just like action figure accessories. Maybe to sell more toys? But I'm enjoying Taiga, overall. The show's at its strongest when it focuses on the relationship between Hiroyuki and the Tri-Squad, and I far prefer focusing on the three Ultras bantering and showcasing each of their own unique personalities, rather than whatever guest star we happen to get that episode (like the sorceress--what was that about?). Which is why I actually enjoyed the clip show episode, it was a very comedic but character-driven way of presenting old clips; I love how the Tri-Squad bickers, just like how you'd expect close friends would. Onward to catching up on the Voice-Dramas! Last edited by Salaryman Zero; 11-09-2019 at 11:06 PM.. |

They've fallen behind on Ultraman Taiga but episode 16 dropped a few days ago so they're still trucking along at there own pace.

Boy, I love the throwback to Ginga S movie where the older Ultraman stay and fight their rivals while the newest ones faced the final boss, only this time it's Ginga and Victory who stayed behind. Though I have to nitpick about the very greenscreen fight. Quote:

Speaking of Taiga, the guest stars are pretty weird but it seems like it's the core part of the show, kinda like Kamen Rider W where they get new clients every bi-episode. I do wish they would change it though, nothing wrong with episodic episodes, but Ultraman has proven that it's at its strongest with serialized plots. ......Then again X's rugby episode and the documentary episodes are my favorite filler episodes :P

I want a spinoff, and an SHF of Ribut! But I also kinda want Ribut to have a Zero-like role in a future Ultra series!
Color Timer probably stopped full time, and Genm Corp is slowly catching up (I think it's because last week there's no Kamen Rider and Super Sentai episodes so they're able to whip out 3 episodes pretty quick). I'm glad GenmCorp continues subbing them though, I heard that they originally planned to drop it, which in speculation is because Taiga is getting a worldwide release in 2020. I actually don't mind done-in-one episodes since that's always felt like the bread and butter of most Ultra-shows going back to the OG series, and some of my favorite NG episodes are those with great guest-stars (Tears of Gan Q!). But for some reason, it feels like most of the guest plots in Taiga are kinda mediocre? I'm not sure why...but they seem to lack heart. Like the psychic girl one, the sorceress one etc. The only recent one I enjoyed was the Nackle one, and even that episode didn't spend too much time developing Nackle's abrupt heel-turn. Compare that to the Black Directive episode in Orb, which had a similar concept but a far smoother execution. Anyway, I finished up the Voice Dramas recently, and wow Andro Melos. Seems like they're really building on every chunk of Ultra-lore. Oh, and Fuma continues to be incredibly likeable, much like Titas and Taiga. |

Thank you for letting me know of that odd Ultraman vs Kamen Rider special, just so I was able to see the part where Ichigou drives a motorcycle straight through a kaiju's head.
