Episode 37: The Baketake Before the Storm We're officially in endgame, and Changerion reaches its darkest hour. And really, Gauzer being the big bad by the end only makes sense, given how he's worked his way into everything by this point. See, all throughout the show, Akira and the gang really haven't been paying attention to plot at large, instead focusing only on the smaller scale and more immediate threats that DarkZide has posed. That, combined with how Gauzer now knows everyone's' character flaws in and out, makes it easy for him to place Tokyo under martial law, and become the grand dictator of his own nation. In short, he's done playing games, and it's time for both Earth and the Dark Dimension to know how dangerous he truly is. This is the first part of a three part finale, and something tells me we're in for a wild ride.

Episode 38: The One Who Grasped the Empire Things have gotten very intense. And while I did have a good time with this episode, I feel like I shouldn't say all that much about it if I'm being honest. The way the climax of it goes down is something I've never seen before in, well, any show ever, and as such I don't dare spoil it. Thankfully, there are atleast a couple of other aspects to mention here. Seeing Akira finally overcome his weakness to women was good to see, and the commentary on how war affects families and the dangers of blind faith were also a nice touch, especially in regards to how such mindsets affect children. Something not often talked about in these stories. And while this episode could work as an ending to the show all its own, there are still a few little lingering aspects, of which I hope the upcoming last episode will be able to deliver on. Let's find out.

Episode 39: Over the Times... This is the sort of ending where I really implore you not read my post on it. Seriously, if you've been at all interested in Changerion up to now, but have been reading my posts instead of watching, don't do that here. Even then though, I'm gonna do my best to be as vague as possible here, because I frankly don't want the ending to this show, which has shown to go in wildly different directions, to be spoiled. I found it that special. With that out of the way, I really have to wonder if this was the planned ending for the show all along. The way it comes about very much signals that it was due to the show getting cut short from its planned 52 episodes, and yet, I still think that it overall works in the grand context of the show? It's similar to the (in)famous ending of Roseanne(my favorite sitcom of all time, by the way!), wherein it casts a whole new light on everything that came before, and gives the viewer the window to read into past scenes in an entirely new light. And for those who end up being fans of Changerion, I could easily see this ending being just as contentious as Roseanne's'. It's incredibly daring for a show aimed at children to have an ending like this too. A show wherein it's actually debatable on if the ending is definitive or not, and whether or not the heroes have truly won is not one you often come across in children's' media, and one that we wouldn't see the likes of again until Kamen Rider Faiz, another Inoue work(which makes me all the more curious about that upcoming 20th anniversary movie). In the end, there's alot of different ways of processing this sort of ending, and it's one that, had Changerion actually had a fanbase, I imagine would still get loads of discussion even up to this day. Final thoughts on the show as a whole coming later. Not today though. I think I need to lie down.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON CHANGERION Someone once described Inoue's' style of writing to me as "only big swings." And if you ever felt the desire to get evidence for that claim, you really need to look no farther than Super Shining Hero Changerion. Granted, I'm not familiar with too much of Inoue's' works outside of the Kamen Rider franchise, but I'd be more than willing to bet that out of all things Inoue, Changerion is the most "Inoue" show he's ever had a hand in. Because really, I think that the entire purpose of this show was to just swing for the fences in every which way. Playing with various toku tropes in every way possible and gunning for the most over the top results possible very much seem to be the mission statement here. Does it always work out? No. Does it result in the greatest tokusatsu show ever devised? No. Does it even make any sort of sense half the time? No. But does it result in one of the most wild rides of a TV that I've ever experienced? Oh you'd better believe it. Sure, the lows of this show are super low, but really, at the end of it, I don't know if I'd change a single thing Changerion has to offer. The main appeal is of course the absolute fever dream I experienced with about 70% of the episodes, but even disregarding that, there were other aspects that were rather endearing in their own right. The character development for most of the cast was handled rather well for the most part, and the cast in and of itself was always very likable and fun to watch overall. The plot wasn't always great, and is sometimes even forced, but it was the sort of thing I never minded much. With all that said, while I do find it a shame that the show got cut short of its initially planned 52 episodes, I also totally understand why the ratings for this were never going to be great. From what I understand, Changerion was marketed towards children, with some typical toyetic traits to go along with it, and yet the show's' primary focus relies on alot of meta and adult humor and commentary that kids really aren't going to get. It's not even like there were alot of actions scenes to make up for it either. But even despite that the primary style of the show never got lost, and that's something I actually respect, and at the end of it all, I really do think that Changerion is Inoue's' best work. Yes there were aspects I didn't like, such as most of the romance episodes, but not once did I feel as though the entire show got ruined or that the bad outweighed the good such as in Kamen Rider Faiz. So with all that in mind, my final rating for Changerion is a very solid 4/6. It's not the best roller coaster ride I've ever been on, but it was a damn fun one, and I'm glad I got to experience it.

Radio Drama: One Night on a Snowy Peak Is it Christmas already!? Bereke Scrubs literally dropped this subbed radio drama that was a bonus on Changerion's' DVD set today, and I love them for it. It's a simple setup of everyone on the main cast being trapped inside of a lodge located deep in the Himalayas, but yet it also captures alot of what I loved about the show overall, and I wouldn't have it any other way. And that's all their is to say really. It's a lighthearted, simplistic audio short wherein it's just the characters all bouncing off one another while still keeping perfectly in tune with the show proper. They even maintained the transformation announcer! That's how you know it's authentic! Overall, a fun time, and I recommend any fan check it out.
