Shiguru might actually be my favourite character now (something that is sure to change a lot because every character on this show is so great). The ridiculous flying visual during his song in the middle was amazing, and I like that the song itself incorporated the gag of his dumb line from his first focus episode.

I agree with the above comment. Shiguru didn’t grab me when they first revealed Kiramager because he seemed like a rehash of the same character Arakawa’s been writing in the blue suit since Abaranger (ie. a self-serious character with not much more than a basic backstory). In general, I’m not keen on the concept of serious blues, especially since the most character they ever seem to show is “speaks broken English”. Yakumo was probably the only example I really had any affection for, because they at least tried to squeeze some comedy out of his thinking he’s an Englishman. But Shiguru quickly showed that there’s actually something distinct about him in his first episode and this one, where Atom is allowed to let rip with his comedic side, really cemented him as my favourite (especially since I’m losing love for Juru and Sayo’s turned out to be the one “out of focus” character this year). It helps that his song in the contest is lie, Gou’s during Gekiranger’s own contest: the best of the bunch.
TL:dr. I liked this episode better than the last two, but I have one gripe, which I’m not sure is a mistranslation or an informed ability. They said that Gomoryu was bigger than the Shellgas, Liganys and Basras they’ve fought before, but in the robot fight, it seem to be the same size as them. |

Shiguru is a character who brings a ton of amazing qualities to this series thanks to his unique mix of genuine talent and extremely fragile ego, which is why it's hilariously appropriate that he's never ~quite~ managed to edge out Tametomo in the race for being my favorite Kiramager.
Make no mistake, though – I still love me some Shiguru, and one of the key points in his favor is that episodes about him are pretty much always major winners. This one being no exception. Shiguru and Juuru's wacky island adventure is just a great time. From the moment Shiguru goes out of his way to insist the only way to heal the broken heart of a magic space stone is with the power of entertainment(!), you know it has to be. They start out fairly mundane, but Kaori Kaneko is more than happy to remind you she's also the one who wrote *that* episode of LuPat with how absurd it gets when this episode of Kiramager briefly turns into a music video. Before the actual music video, I mean. Anyway, watching Shiguru flail around trying to get a reaction out of Hakobu is hilarious, and it's a testament to the strength and depth of his character that I genuinely couldn't tell until the end whether or not the joke would end up being that this was not going to plan, or that it was. Honestly, the only reason I even trust Shiguru isn't lying about plotting the whole scheme from the start is that I figure he'd be way too flustered to lie if it wasn't. But maybe that's what he wants me to think? I don't know! The man is a real enigma sometimes, and that's what makes me love him! While Juuru is stuck playing sidekick (of course Shiguru smartly picks the person least likely to attempt upstaging him), the other four members of the team are doing the heavy lifting for the action this week, and it is some good action. I don't mind the sudden emphasis on all the auxiliary mecha that haven't seen much use lately, for one. I also don't mind Tametomo immediately thinking to try the old "throw some paint on the invisible guy" trick at the start; Tametomo always getting cool/smart moments even in episodes not about him is one of the reasons he outshines Shiguru for me. But while Kiramager's robot fights tend to leave me more satisfied than average, the thing that really stands out in this one is yet another really delightful and elaborately choreographed sequence that probably isn't technically one take – but definitely LOOKS like one super smooth take, lasting over a full minute, with everyone present getting to show off in at least one part. It's completely nuts, and I was already going to be happy with that scene just because it started with Sena specifically being the first one to run in, with that consistency being one of the things that generally puts her slightly ahead of Shiguru for m... Look, I just really love this show and these wacky characters, alright? I'm not trying to throw shade on Shiguru; it's just that thinking about how great he is always seems to lead me back to how great so many other things in Kiramager are. I don't know. Sounds dumb, don't it?

The sheer ferocity and tone of the Gomoryu is a nice counterbalance to the tone of the Kiramager and the Mashin themselves! It's like both the team and the new Giant are the extreme version of what they represent. The level of miniature work here just to show how dangerous a Gomoryu is definitely adds a nice bit of set work that is usually attributed to Ultraman!
Hakobu's voice was familiar. Someone somewhere suggest DekaMaster's actor, but I'm not certain. Sayo again has some of the best moments. She posited psychiatric help as a possible solution for Hakobu and surprised Yodonna so well! I wasn't really moved by Shigeru here. It didn't really matter that he said he planned it out from the beginning. |
