Change Robo
(The second robot image is included so that you can get a good look at it from up close) I'll admit, I've always gotten Change Robo mixed up with Dyna Robo because they are so similar to each other in terms of overall silhouette and colour scheme. Now that I've gotten used to them, I gotta say I prefer Dyna Robo over Change Robo. Change Robo still carries quite a few of the things that I liked about Dyna Robo but they are a bit diluted. The biggest example in my opinion is the chest. The red and yellow details on it really breaks up the mostly blue body and not in a good way; They just stick out like a sore thumb. The head also looks a little bit derpy to me, though I do kinda find it a little endearing. About the only thing that I can say is a definite improvement over Dyna Robo are the individual components which are a little bit more interesting. Flash King Just awesome. Out of all the Pre-Zyuranger mechas, Flash King is my absolutely favourite. The colour balance is excellent, none of them overpower one another and they all pop just where they need to. The design elements like the gem on the chest and forehead are very striking and help set it apart from previous mechas. Just everything about it I think is just great. Titan Boy/Flash Titan The first secondary mecha for Sentai. Titan Boy ranges around the okay level for me, not bad but not that spectacular either. The fact that the chest just goes straight down from torso to mid-section also makes it look a little, well for lack of a better term, childlike in proportion.; But considering his name is you know, Titan Boy, I'm guessing that might be a deliberate design choice. Great Titan Euuuuuugggggggghhhhhhh. I will say that fact that this is formed by Titan Boy combining in with his trailer technically means that he is two robots in one, something that I don't think happens again until Timeranger. Otherwise though this thing looks absolutely ridiculous. Granted from what little I've seen of the show, It pretty much acts like a tank. Still you'd think they would try and not make it look like an enlarged version of the toy. Next week, since we finally have two mechs per show, we're only doing Maskman. |

What are we discussing exactly?
I mean, if you want my opinion on Change Robo, he sucks. He's just a less interesting version of Dyna Robo who was a bootlegged Dairugger XV. Also, Flashking looks like they just color swapped Bio Robo but added a new chest. |

Change Robo as a design is kinda...meh. The Helicopter has the fists on the underside and the only redeeming factor are the missiles that fire literally from the fists! However, while the design is mediocre, I have to say that my recollection of the series was surprising! Changeman isn't something you would think highly about, but I do recommend it. The final battle with Change Robo is...unique!
Flash King is an example of how things work! The Jets form the arms AND legs and have bar-like connectors to combine with the tank. When merged, most of the vehicle kibble is folded and if you don't look closely (the back does have tank parts), you might not think that it's a combined robot! You have to wonder what would have happened if Toei had put their efforts in Flash King instead of... Titan Boy: An apparent Optimus Prime knockoff who looks relatively well in vehicle mode, and strangely memorable in robot mode, cause it isn't a bad robot mode and stands out because its the first of the smaller "Boy" Mecha in Sentai. What I never fully understood is why everyone despises Great Titan. From a distance, it's boxy but not anymore terrible than some of the other boxy, giant robots we've gotten over the years. What I don't like, besides the fact that it doesn't do anything but blast things, is the way the head and chest look together during the firing footage. There is something about the look and positions of the head and chest that is significantly more distasteful as it fires its ONLY attack! That said, it doesn't look it would be the worst design on paper! |

Flash King looks better, aesthetically. It looks like the design team finally decide to impletement some changes that separate Flash King from its predecessor.

So a year after we go back to three components with Change Robo. Given its tone and team look I think this was a miss. Personally it feels like they missed the mark with the color scheme. Bio Robo had a unified look to it with its color scheme but this just tried to do a throwback to Sun Vulcan Robo and Dyna Robo ending up looking not so impressive.
Flash King however feels like it solved this problem by using less yellow and making it more navy and red. Like Byg said, the color balance is just right this time. Also, all three components look beautiful individually as opposed to Changeman's. I especially love that the two jets share the same chassis yet differ greatly in details. Jet Delta(jet with red parts) has a delta wing config with a canard on the front making it look like it is ready to fly faster than anything else. Jet Seeker(jet with blue parts) lives up to its name with a RADOME on top of it. And now to Great-freakin-Titan. One thing Flashman is notable for is an introduction to the concept of the backup/secondary robot. Also, not a lot of people know this but this design is also used in Bandai's Machine Robo(Gobots for overseas) toyline. Nonetheless, a fun design. Yes, it is pretty much a plastic brick with tiny arms when it combines to form Great Titan, but at the time this was a new concept and if I remember correctly this thing TOWERED over the monster of the week during a giant battle. Titan Boy on its own is a neat design as well.
