Mooks, grunts, minions, hanchmen, footsoldiers, combatmen, cannon fodder, whatever you call them, the poor generics whose main role is to show up in large numbers and get easily beaten to show off how powerful the main characters are. Which ones are your favorites, and why?
For me it's a tie between the Bugster Virus and the plain Roidmudes. I really like how the Bugster Virus change costumes and weapons depending on which Bugster monster they're serving. I wish more Kamen Rider seasons had different variants of minions to reflect which master they followed, even if it wasn't different for every monster and was just for the commanders. As for the plain Roidmudes, their designs are so delightfully menacing, they look like they could've been the special monsters of the week in another Kamen Rider show. And I enjoy how even though they fill the "generic minion" role in Drive they aren't actually generic, each one is unique and some of them even get characterization beyond just being minions to the evolved Roidmudes. |

I actually really dislike mooks. They tend to devalue the monsters since it prevents the monsters from having a chance to shine by wasting fight time on them, and it also makes the monsters feel weaker since they need the huge amount of back up during a fight (And, being a MOTW show, still lose).
I much prefer when a monster appearing alone is a large enough threat, and they're strong enough to handle themselves. If I did have to pick a mook, I'd choose the Darkroaches from Blade, since their appearance was a very significant one.

But if you save the mooks for certain occasions, that makes them more meaningful. Like for example, having them only be used by villains who are powerful, connected or in a leadership role. That way, it's less "oh look, more mooks to mow down" and more "oh crap, this must be a Big Deal if the bad guy brought backup!" (I realize neither of my favorites exactly follow that rule, oops) |

My favorite individual mook is the Destron one with the rounded eye mask because it was the original prototype and a neat piece of trivia.
In general, I like the GOD mooks because of their stylish capes and berets. |

Ghouls from Wizard to me. They kinds feel like what a modern day Putty Patrol would look like.
Even though Putties are golems lol.

I agree. Thought the spread on I like the Ghouls is also because they can’t be defeated by a few kicks to the chest by untrained children or teenagers. They’re actually as much a challenge as any monster.

Hm, it's kinda hard to think of generic mooks in Kamen Rider. I mostly picture all the grunts Super Sentai & Power Rangers have, since Kamen Rider tends to have more unique villain designs appear more frequently.
That being said I think the generic Yummies from OOO are pretty cool. Being wrapped up in bandages really drives home the ancient feel the OOO lore & powers often lack. And having that gaping, dark circle forms face let's me feel just how empty they are & why they need to feed off everyone's desire & greed. |

I love the Soldier Ant Amazons from Amazons.
They're terrifying, have a great suit design, and their swarm tactics are ruthlessly effective (most of the time anyways). Not to mention that they can disguise themselves as humans. |

A series with multiple types of mooks offers some diversity. A Sentai with mooks that enlarge is also fun cause then you can have episodes without a MOTW and devote more time to story then the time it takes to show the threat of a new MOTW in addition to the fun of seeing a Robo take down an army of mooks. Some mooks become central to the plot of an episode, like the special Imps which served Venus in GoGoV 35. Then you have special occurrences like the Combined Combatant from the Gokaiger Movie. In rare instances, the mooks are so connected to the Big Bad that we learn something through the mooks, like that whole thing with Genis in Zyuohger (admittedly, that "revelation" didn't really change much, but still...)!
Mooks can be fun and interesting and are a staple to a Sentai more than Riders these days. Riders haven't totally abandoned the concept by any stretch, but Sentai seems to always lean into it more. Last edited by TokuKnight89; 08-25-2020 at 04:36 AM.. |
