This is a big question, but I have to ask... What actually happened at the climax of Ghost? I watched every episode, but, in hindsight, I still feel like I missed a story element or a Chekov's gun, or something important.

Tenkuji Takeru was the key. Also, infinite potential.

If I may ask, how do you guys make a criteria for the main or the lead Riders and for the secondary Riders? For myself, I like if the main Rider is particularly kind but not so stupid or overly forced to believe that he is clumsy, positive or something like, for example is Godai. He is kind and a bit goofy sometimes but he's smart in adapting the Grongi's fight. For Secondary Riders, I do like strict and serious characters like Ryu Terui but I really dislike several characters that is too absent or one-minded, like Kaito Kumon. I really like Go as a primary example of a good Secondary Rider. He might be goofy at first but when the time calls, he is so serious than even Shinnosuke and Chase. Even his goofy personality is just a facade.

I don't have much of a preference personality-wise, I generally like main characters that get stuff done (as opposed to being reactive or passive) and secondary Riders that complement the main Rider in some way. Tendou/Kabuto is proactive, not to mention a total badass from the very beginning. Kagami/Gatack complements him by being relatable and giving us the struggle to become a Rider storyline we wouldn't have gotten otherwise. (I don't know if the story even needed more than two Riders. I prefer shows with multiple Riders, though, and the tertiary Riders were a huge part of why I enjoyed that season so much.)
On the other hand, Haruto/Wizard is also a badass from the beginning and he also fights to protect a girl that I couldn't bring myself to care about (sorry, Hiyori and Koyomi) but unlike Tendou, he has a forgettable personality. I guess he's nice? He only likes plain sugar donuts and that makes him quirky? (I also remember him being lazy, he rarely chased after the monsters when they ran away. ) Kosuke/Beast does complement him by being fun and outgoing, as well as having a more interesting storyline. I also appreciate it when a main Rider is the perfect main character for the themes of their story, like Eiji/OOO and his relationship with desire.

I think it would be cool to see more quiet or low key (well put!) characters as main Riders, actually. I liked Haruto at first, but unfortunately for me, as I grew bored of the show I also became frustrated with his character. I wish the story had been stronger, it would have supported his personality a little more. I don't know if that makes any sense, I just feel like I would have enjoyed that season a lot more if either the story had been different to make me like Haruto more or if the main character had had a bigger personality (more charismatic or outwardly passionate, I don't know), since as it was the story lacked oomph for me.

I'm definitely a big fan of the whole "flawed yet likable protagonist who slowly becomes more heroic" dealie. Takumi is a pretty good example of this, but I could make cases for Shotaro/Philip and Kagami too. Really though, as long as I find the main character fun or compelling in some sense, I'm not too picky. I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of the more instantly heroic protagonist type, even if they have a backstory for it, it usually comes across as unbelievable to me. Shinji is probably my favorite example of this type, but I think it just worked really well for the kind of show Ryuki was.
