The Hypothetical Casting thread

So the purpose of this thread should be simple. When reading fanfiction (be it yours or someone else’s), do you just read the characters with your own voice, or do you have a rough idea of who you’d cast as them if the fic was produced as a screenplay? And if the latter, then you list your choices.

For my current project, Power Rangers AVX, I don’t have an English cast in mind (since I try to keep my casting realistic. If somebody on my list dies, they get replaced for instalments released long enough after their death), beyond the guy voicing Malgramon also portraying Miles Gorman (spoilers as to why will not be published here). But I do have a Japanese dub cast in mind, since all I have to focus on there is who would be reading the dialogue rather than who’d be physically playing the part.

Ricky Jackson/Red Ranger: Daisuke Namikawa (Engine Speedor from Go-Onger)

Drew Williams/Black Ranger: Natsuki Hanae (Gakuto from Yu-Gi-Oh SEVENS)

Artie Baldwin/Blue Ranger: Shota Hayama (Ultraman Fuma from Ultraman Taiga)

Roland McCormick/Yellow Ranger: Jun’ya Enoki (Yomogi from SSSS. Dynazenon)

Raquel Collins/Pink Ranger: Akeno Watanabe (Numeri from Tropical Rouge Pretty Cure)

Dr. Beck: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Torin from Kyoryuger)

Kalia: Fumiko Orikasa (Kanade from Suite Pretty Cure)

Chloe Ambo: Yu Kobayashi (Sparda from Mahou Girls Pretty Cure)

Villains:

Malgramon: Rikiya Koyama (Ohma Zi-O)

Bugroth: Tatsuya Hashimoto (Alien Valky from Ultraman Ginga)

Damos: Kenjiro Tsuda (Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh)

Hellivore: Tomokazu Sugita (Ultraman Ginga)

Reptillia: Michie Tomozawa (the original Sailor Mars)

Malchemist: Tomomichi Nishimura (Moebius from Fresh Pretty Cure)

If it's a fanfic, novel or other media that doesn't have VA, such as Final Fantasy VIII, then I will always take voices from other media based on how I think those characters will sound. Sometimes those voices might change if I get a better understanding of the characters. Can you imagine reading a ship where you're voicing both characters? I think that would be awkward. There are some versatile VAs like Troy Baker and Tara Strong who can be imagined for a lot of different characters.

What about suit actors though? That's something I think about more often when I'm planning original Sentai, to try and think how the characters' body type would translate in to suit.
