The Pilgrimage
Part One “You wished to see me Father?” Her knees settled down upon the soft cushion, knelt there in the main room of the Shiba House. Hands laid within her lap. Delicately, one atop the other, while watching her Father slowly pace the room. She still wore the black kimono she’d taken to wearing since her defeat. With her hair pulled back into that single long braid. And, of course, the Bat Zord perched upon her shoulder. Watching Ji pace with the same interest as his Mistress. Of course Ji wanted to see her. He called her here, after all. But he hadn’t exactly been forthcoming with why. Which made her worry. Already thinking back on the weeks since she was defeated, and began trying to walk a different path. She’d been helping rebuild the sections of the city she helped destroy. Had been spending time with the people hurt, and trying to walk a better road. But the way he paced now made her think she’d done something else. “Father.” She said finally. “Please just be out with it, your pacing is… making me nervous.” That made him pause. Taking a noticeable heavy sigh, enough she watched as his shoulders sunk a full six inches. “The elders of the temple have decided your penance is nearly over, Kyoko.” That surprised her, but didn’t explain why he looked so worried. “And, Father?” “And it’s been decided that as your final act you must wander. In the world there are five parts of a Morpher, one which will becomes yours if you find all the pieces. Each protected by a different guardian from an age passed. … If you fail, you are never allowed to return again. Nor keep your Zord.” And now she understood his apprehension. “.. When do I leave?” She knew she hadn’t the choice, they would strip her of her friend if she didn’t leave. Didn’t mean she was looking forward to this however. The answer was the following morning. Which found her knelt beside her bed carefully packing everything she thought she might need, all into one duffle she could carry easily. Her sword, her black disc, but she wasn’t allowed her Zord companion. That bothered her but she understood. One change of clothes, one spare pair of shoes and socks. The sword she could carry on her back separately, so that created enough room she could fit one or two notebooks. But that was all. She could already hear them outside.. So ready to send her off. Not her Father. She understood he didn’t want her to go, and honestly wanted her around. It was the others. Not that she blamed them, to be perfectly honest. She did try and kill each and every single one of them. .. Still wasn’t easy to see them all gathered to make sure she was honestly leaving. But she walked out regardless. Watching as her Zord was called by her father, and landed perfectly folded into his palm. “I remembered you said he needed to stay, Father. He was only seeing me off.” He nodded, but still. “We will speak again when you return, Kyoko.” She leaned into his hug while giving him an understanding nod. The rest of them, well, she just ignored the rest of them. They all seemed rather content she was leaving aside from Emily. But she was soft.. The Northern Wood. A lot of the people from the City avoided these woods, and she couldn’t understand why. She was surrounded by beauty. Trees which stretched on until they almost touched the sky itself, with long tendrils of sunlight pouring through the leafy canopy above her. The gentle mist which wrapped around each trunk and laid across the ground like an ethereal blanket. She found the woods rather peaceful, honestly. But she wasn’t here to enjoy scenery. She was here to find the first piece of her new Morpher, and learn some life lesson. Kyoko took a deep breath, deciding enjoying the forest one more moment couldn’t hurt, and leaned herself back against an old oak. .. And ended up grunting on her back! “… The Hell?!” Kyoko rose herself onto her knees, resting her backside down against her heels, while rubbing a hand along the new sore spot behind her head. “How did I just fall through a blasted tree…?” She still had everything. Her duffle was beside her, her wrapped sword beside that, and she seemed uninjured.. Aside from the bump. “You should be more careful, that first step is a killer.” The voice had strength. And when she turned her head she could understand why. The man wore golden armor, with a flowing blue cape behind him. This had to be the first guardian, she thought, but she wasn’t going to take chances. That was why she reached for her wrapped sword. Not taking off the black silk covering the sword, just holding her weapon ready.. “.. My name is Kyoko. I’ve come to prove myself before the Guardian.” And the man just chuckled. “Who else would I be?” That was when the man struck his pose. Raising his right hand, twisting his open palm as he announced himself. “Power of the Sun, I am.. Solaris Knight!” |

The Pilgrimage
Part 2 The warmth of the fire was comforting. The soft crackle as the wood within the flames, the pine scent as the logs inside slowly burned. It could’ve been the surroundings too. The Dragon shaped entrance to Daggeron’s home, connected to the Great Tree above. The mystical energies permeating through the entire wood. She just knew she liked it, whatever it was. “Why do you wish the Power?” His voice broke through her thoughts hard enough her brows knit together. Always someone to bring you back down into reality, she thought. Kyoko turned her head enough to watch the now unarmored Solaris Knight. So she could watch him as she answered. “That could be considered a loaded question, Sir Daggeron. The best answer would be because I was told to find it. To prove I’ve changed, and the past few months hadn’t been a lie.” The man gave a rolling chuckle, while throwing another log down onto the dwindling fire. “Least you are honest. Your first test then will come in the morning. I cannot tell you what it is, but you will know it when you see it. And for your sake I hope you pass.. Because the gateway here will not open for you again if you do not.” Meaning, bluntly, she was stuck here forever if she failed. Kyoko wished someone had explained that to her before she fell through the looking glass into Wonderland. Kyoko woke with a start to the sound of heavy trunks being knocked over. The distinct sound wood breaking, splintering away, and trees heavily falling onto others like hastily erected dominos. Narrowing her eyes she reached for her sword on instinct… it was gone! So was her duffle! Her eyes widened though when she caught a more pressing problem coming her way. A quick kick of her legs brought her onto her feet from being prone on the ground, and only that diving roll forward stopped the next tree from landing right where she was laying. Her body moved on instinct alone. Keeping her profile low by bending forward, arms kept straight back behind her. Keeping her low and agile enough to dodge more falling logs. Her knees bent like springs gathering tension as she began leaping for them. Landing on one to the next to the next like she was bitten by a radioactive spider. Always staying ahead of the collapse. Daylight was ahead. Which meant one more leap and… Yes! Her feet slid satisfyingly across the smooth grass clearing, and her right hand’s fingertips sliding along the smooth surface helped her stop herself. And turn her body, using the momentum built, to stand upright. Watching the destruction laid waste on the once beautiful wood. But there was no sign of what caused it. No sign of anything other than fallen trees, and now an endless destroyed landscape. “… It is over…?” Instantly she regretted every saying that. The ground beneath her shook, splitting open allowing large columns of steam to suddenly spring up venting towards the skies.. And rising from them long wooden vines. She caught her footing just in time to see them twisting and combining together, forming some shape within their tangled mess. She watched as the skeletal vines began to be covered in thick moss-like fur, while the large front paws of the beast landed on the solid ground making it shake beneath. Damn it where was her sword! The beast reared it’s head back, the mountain lion shaped monster releasing a roar so mighty it echoed against the mountains in the distance. But she could do this.. She knew she could. All she needed was… And then she saw it! In the distance behind the beast, lodged into a nearby stump, was what looked like a magic wand. Wasn’t her morpher but it would work.. She hoped. All she needed was to be faster than the beast. Please, today, let her be faster than the beast. Rolling herself beneath the Lion’s swiping foot she leapt onto her feet. And just started running. Fast as her legs could carry, dodging swiping claws and snarling teeth. Leaping out of the way seconds before a large paw tried slapping her aside. The Beast though had other ideas. Rearing itself around to stomp his front paws down against the ground, making her loose her footing as the ground shook again. Blocking her path towards the wand. The snarling maw of the beast snapped down at her as she desperately rolled one direction and then the other to avoid being eaten whole. She needed up! She needed on her feet because she’d die if she stayed on her back. When the Beast came down again she tucked herself up and rolled backward, gripping onto long vines hanging down from the wooden mountain lion’s chin. Allowing her to use the momentum to swing up and over the beast’s head. And once her feet touched the soft earth making his body she took off. Precisely controlling her balance, moving with the Beast’s movement instead of against. Like standing upright on the canoe during rough seas. Fighting would only make her fall off and drown.. Or fall off and get eaten, as the case was. Her bare feet pressed against the spine of the beast, leaping between wooden vertebrae. And once she reached the animal’s backside she pressed her feet in and made a diving leap for the stump. The beast though opened it’s maw behind her, trying to swallow her there in midair.. But Kyoko won the race. Gripping hold of the wand, pulling the weapon loose and rolling to safety moments before those maws snapped shut and took the chunk of earth in right where the stump once was. The beast was busy. Distracted with spitting out the stump and clump of earth it almost swallowed. Giving her the time she needed to attempt creating the Wood Symbol of Samurai Green. But.. Nothing was happening! Why was nothing happening?! She didn’t have time to try again, the beast was finished spitting out the log and was charging again.. What was she supposed to do?! But it came to her.. It was a Wand. She remembered last night, Daggeron using words to create the fire, words which made magic.. She didn’t write the symbol she needed to speak it, she needed to believe it! Closing her eyes, holding the wand towards the charging monster beast she called upon the power she needed.. And hoped. “MOKUZAI!” The suddenly pulse of Green Energy erupted from the wand, proclaiming she’d guessed right as the tendrils of power struck against the power of the beast. Lashing against the howling creature’s leafy skin, bringing it down onto her knees.. And Kyoko pulled back. Ceasing her attack just as the beast collapsed onto it’s side. As she approached, her hand played along the creature’s cheek unable to bring herself to destroy it.. “You passed.” Kyoko turned her head towards the voice, just as everything around her faded from view. Returning to the idealic forest she remembered. And Daggeron standing beside her, holding in his arms a small white kitten. Stroking one hand along his back as he continued. “The Test wasn’t learning how to use a wand, it was showing Mercy for the first time in your life. You could’ve easily destroyed her. Instead you stopped short and only defeated her rampage..” Kyoko stood back. Watching as Daggeron released the kitten, changing it into the first piece of her new morpher. Kyoko caught the small number pad and held it close within her hand against her chest. “So you never left, my sword was never missing, and none of that actually happened..” Now it all made sense. He used one of his spells to create that world, to test her and see if she’d spare the beast. … And she passed! “Where is my next test, Daggeron?” The man chuckled, giving a shake of his head. “Eager to leave already?” He was teasing her, of course. “You’ll ride my Solar Streak Megazord into another world, a City named Corinth. There you’ll find your next test.” |

The Pilgrimage
Part 3 “Sir! The Defense Network just lit up like Christmas!” Colonel Mason rushed towards his command board, punching up what his Commander was seeing. And he didn’t understand it either. “Doctor K!” Watching his Comm. Board the familiar block letters and readout popped onto his screen, followed by the synthized female voice chiming on. “Yes, Colonel. I’m watching it to. And before you ask: Yes, Paleomax Megazord is safe within it’s hanger. Whatever that is is not us. Nor is it Venjix, it reads one human pilot.” The Colonel rubbed one hand along his chin, weighing the only option he had. “Scramble the Rangers, Defense posture only!” The brilliant flash of light certainly wouldn’t draw attention. Then she thought, if that didn’t draw anyone here then the giant blue and gold train bursting into their city might.. Solaris certainly didn’t craft this thing for stealth. But that couldn’t be helped. Kyoko had one of the pieces of her new morpher, and she needed to find the next one. She smiled though as a familiar warmth pressed firm into her ankle. “And when did you sneak onboard?” Carefully bending over while she stood, she scooped the small white kitten into her arms. Stroking one hand along her back while she dismounted the Solar Streak. Only to watch as the mammoth train disappeared again. Well, she certainly wasn’t leaving that way. And she was suddenly very happy she remembered to shoulder her sword and duffle before stepping off. “Well, Genji, we aren’t leaving here for a while.” “Good, because we’d like some answers.” Turning herself around Kyoko found herself staring at a very familiar sight. Three Rangers, Morphed, with one hand on their holstered weapons. Though these ones looked a little different. Like someone hot-glued hot wheels onto spandex. Oh, how badly did she want to giggle right now. “Answers I have.” Suddenly she very much missed Daggeron’s forest. This Base was to sterile, to bogged down by technology. It was all smooth walls and fake floors. Blinking lights and loud sounds, and metal. God the metal. But the chairs were comfy, she thought. She certainly was enjoying the one she was sitting on. “You were going to give us answers?” Summer, she said her name was. Summer. Kyoko liked that name. “Hai.” She said finally, one hand still stroking her Kitten. “My name’s Kyoko. I come from a world where.. Well, we don’t live in Domed Cities.” And Kyoko went on. Explaining how she was once what they’d consider evil, how the Rangers defeated her, and after months of penance she was sent off on her journey to build a new Morpher. And redeem herself. What helped was Scott. Thanks to him following an enemy to her world and meeting the Samurai Rangers. And the fact it made the giant magic train suddenly make a lot more sense. Scott was the first to chime in. “We don’t know anything about any test, Kyoko. Before you got here we were outside the Dome. Doing clean-up on the remnants of Venjix’s army. And we can’t use the Subway to get you home either, because that gateway was sealed when I passed through. .. Looks like you’re stuck here.” Kyoko dropped her shoulders. Stuck, in this ruined world, for the rest of her life? Shaking her head she continued stroking the back of her Kitten. “Then what can I do to help the people? If I can’t go home, I want to continue making up for my sins back home.” That was when the alarm rose. Doctor K appearing upon one of the monitors, which drew everyone’s attention. Including hers. “Rangers. Three of Venjix’s Advanced Troopers are making a run for the perimeter. Colonel Mason has ordered you launch in the Bio-Zords right now!” She could hear the battle from even inside the bunker making their base. The ground shaking with the familiar thrumping of a Megazord running, clashing swords and explosions. And people.. She stood, leaving her duffle and sword behind. And her newfound Kitten a tender kiss between his ears, before running towards the Bunker doors.. Only to find them sealed. “Where are you going, Kyoko? There’s a battle raging outside.” Doctor K had asked, with a curious tilt of her head. “Outside to help the people caught in the fighting.” Kyoko turned towards the strange Monitor Woman, and pointed towards the door. “Open this. Someone needs to help them evacuate before the Monsters or the Rangers accidentally crush people just trying to make it from harm’s way!” Doctor K looked to be considering, looked to be debating with herself over what to do. “Doctor!” The woman gave a quick nod, and punched the control from her side. “Be careful Kyoko. This world is dangerous, and you are new here.” The cityscape outside was chaos. But Kyoko was doing her best. Ushering people towards the safe zones, making sure they followed the correct roads which one of the soldiers had told her on her way here. Helping those who needed. While the city exploded all around them. In the distance the rangers fought against the coming horde using their Zords. She overheard one of the soldiers saying they intercepted a powerful signal, and were throwing everything they had at the city to find it.. Which meant this was her fault. What else could the signal be but the Solar Streak bursting into this world? That made her frown but it also made her focus. It was all the more important then she help these people, since… Blinking wide a scream caught her attention. Throwing her head around she saw where the scream had come from. A small blonde girl, standing terrified in the middle of the road with one of those monsters losing his footing.. Make her fast enough. Debris was falling around her. Half of what was once an office complex crumbled beside, but she remained focused. Keeping herself low. Rushing out towards .. Nothing. When her arms reached out for the girl they went right through, and she found herself laying curled on a safety mat inside the Ranger’s Bunker. Her brows knit in confusion and she brought herself up onto her knees to kneel. “Another test…?” Scott was the first one to offer her his hand. Using his help to stand before folding her arms back in against her chest. “You were in a virtual world soon as you walked in. Daggeron came here a month ago, said we’d be needed to give you a test. And to give you this.” With her palm opened Scott gave her the second piece of her new morpher. Along with a strange ticket, with one hole punched already. “What’s this?” “The ticket I used to go to your world in the first place. Daggeron clipped it in that morpher of his, and now it’ll take you to your next test. He also said something about being sure to take care of Genji.” Genji! Turning around Kyoko smiled, opening her arms just as the Kitten leapt up and nestled in back against her neck. “He knows I will.. Did he say where my next test will be?” Before Scott could answer the card erupted with light, engulfing the Rangers, submerging her in an intense warmth. Seems her question was about to answered anyway. And it was soon as the light faded, and her eyes adjusted to the dark. She caught her duffle laying on the sidewalk along with her sword, and Genji was still nestled within her arms.. So there was that. But where was she? Looked.. Futuristic. Tall buildings made of glass, cars which took for the skies and flew about between them like fireflies. This definitely wasn’t home. And it wasn’t Corinth either, the air didn’t taste fake and stale. Where was she? Sighing, giving her shoulders a soft roll, she noticed Genji seemed to be staring at something. “What is it, Gen?” Following his eyeline, upwards to the skyline above her, her eyes to became wide. They were on the doorstep of a massive building. The focal point of the entire city, from the look. White and blue with.. “Why does that building have a Dog’s head…” |
