Liked; Fight scenes, Beast, the concept of the phantoms, Haruto's backstory
Hated: Getting handed power ups and pulling them out of his ass. And pretty much the story. |

Five things I loved about Wizard:
1. Haruto. I've said it several times now and I'll always happily repeat it: I think Haruto is one of the best main Riders of the Heisei era. He's proactive, he's dedicated to his mission, and he can be very pragmatic when he has to be but still has a lot of compassion. 2. Fueki's plan. Everything he was doing made sense and fit together. His daughter died so he tried to use the Sabbat to resurrect her. All he did was make a bunch of Phantoms and a Wizard. So he had the Phantoms go around throwing people into despair, ostensibly to make more Phantoms but secretly as a plot to find three more Wizards to power his resurrection ritual. The whole thing made sense and fit with everything we'd seen happen, something that was a great change of pace after Fourze's villain and his total lack of convincing motive or rationale. 3. The action. Wizard had some truly great fight scenes. The hero and villain suits looked good and the fight choreography was top notch. 4. Mayu. The first female Rider to actually survive a series. She was also an interesting character with a good plot arc and the actress did a really good job playing both her and Medusa. 5. Rinko's ass. Mmm... And five things I didn't like about Wizard: 1. Shunpei. Everything about him. I have never seen a more obnoxious and detestable character in all of Kamen Rider. I'd take an entire series of Amane, teen Amane from Missing Ace, and Ozaki from Den-O over two minutes of Shunpei doing pratfalls in his rainbow tights. 2. Koyomi. For a character that was very much at the heart of the entire series, Koyomi was a total failure. The actress was too busy to bother showing up to film anything, which meant that the show never had a chance to develop her as a character. Because of that, any emotional connection we were supposed to have was completely absent, which really robbed the ending of any real emotional impact. 3. Beast. I actually do like Nitou, but the show obviously didn't take him seriously. He's up there with G3 and Delta as one of the most useless Kamen Riders ever. He really didn't contribute anything meaningful to the series until the very end, and he did that by just breaking his belt. 4. The pacing. The two-episode arc structure really fell apart during Fourze, leaving it's overall plot a total mess as the show had to rush through half the Horoscopes and the master villain reveal in the space of about the last twelve episodes. Wizard somehow managed to be even worse in that regard, though, as while I do think the plot holds together well and really does work, it also spends massive stretches of episodes just treading water. We needed to get Mayu earlier and space out Yuzuru and Todoroki more so that the extra Wizards thing was an ongoing development, not an endgame one. We needed Koyomi to be present. The story could have worked so much better, but it was hamstrung by having to have every storyline be a two-parter with a new victim of the fortnight. 5. The Mage suits. I get that they were a way to save money, but Mayu, Yuzuru, and Todoroki deserved proper, non-ugly suits of their own. I think Toei was just afraid to revive the multi-Rider show idea and it left the three Mages looking awful in their recycled movie mook suits. Bonus #6. Shunpei. Again. Because it bears repeating. |

Liked Phoenix and Medusa, I was honestly sad when Phoenix died. He was by far the best villain. Nito. That crazy Mayo-loving homeless explorer saved the show, without him it's even more horrible. Kamen Rider Girls and their music. Shut up. It ended. Disliked Haruto. Don't give me this "He said he won't smile!" bs. His actor was incapable of it and the writer's needed to explain it away. The Belt. At first, it was alright. But that belt single handily killed any drama and emotion that show could've had. Take when he first became Flame Dragon. KRG starts singing, the tension builds, and then.. SHABADOOBIE TOUCH TO HENSHIN! The outfit. Wizard's look was.. bland. It had almost no detail at all, even when he switched forms. Gremlin. A little of "Hello" goes a long way. .. No, I didn't like Wizard. |

The overall designs. Except for the Mages, White Wizard and Beast Hyper, the designs (including the phantoms) are super-beautiful and they all fit the magic theme perfectly. The music. The Wizard soundtrack is amazing, even though I hate the infinity theme, but it has enough great BGM and Rider Chips music to make up for that. Also, dat opening! |3 The effects. Wizard had some truly brilliant visuals. The action was a bit slow imho, but looked good overall. And I love all the sparkles and light effects they used for the spells. Haruto. Though he is the most poorly written character of the Neo-Heisei-Riders, he's kinda loveable and that's thanks to Shiraishi Shunya being an awesome actor. I wish they would have used his actin talent some more, especially by letting him do more comedy (instead of Shunpei and Nitoh being dorks most of the time), because he's truly great at that. Rinko and the Mages. Rinko was a loveable female sidekick and I wish she would have been more effective because character- and acting-wise, she was great. I also liked the Mages and their backstory a lot, but they didn't have enough spotlight imho. Dislike: Koyomi. While having a good female sidekick in the show, the writers decided to have one of the worst characters ever to be the female lead. Koyomi was boring most of the time, annoying or just not interesting when she had some focus and was poorly acted- if the actress was even on set, that is. If the actress just didn't have the time to be there, why did no one change the plot a bit and make it work? The comic relief characters. Most of them are just plain dumb. Shunpei had some nice sides, but was a pain most of the time and the duo that runs the doughnut shop was annoying as hell and not funny at all. The only comedy character that was okay was Nitoh, but admitted, he had his stupid moments too. Though he did have some great comedy with Haruto and some amazing serious moments. The overall plot. While I love the basic concept of Wizard being... well, a wizard and using his powers to give hope, everything that went beyond that was... lame. The whole "Koyomeeeeh!"-stuff would've worked better if Koyomi was a character we actually cared for, same with Fueki. Rinko, Shunpei and the mages had some great backstory, but most of it was dropped too early to use their full potential. Beast would've had more great moments if the main writer would've just accepted his existance and did't waste the precious screentime by making him look an idiot, especially next to Haruto. Many interesting points had only a few episodes, seemed rushed and came out of nowhere (e.g. Haruto's soccer story), while most of the episodes were wasted with... well, nothing happening. Also: Phantoms! Why U so ineffective?! Even the Zodiarts were more successful! The movies. Movie Taisen Ultimatum was the best of the bunch, but the Wizard portion was... kinda meh and ruined by the twist at the end, which was just plain stupid. The crossover scenes and the Fourze portion were great though. The Fateful Sengoku Battle was by far not as good as Ultimatum. The Wizard portion was a pain to watch, while the Gaim and crossover plot was kinda nice. And Wizard in Magic Land had an interesting concept, but it was super-boring and felt too long for what they actually did action- and plotwise. That ending. Well yeah, let's use the big baddy BEFORE the actual finale and have all the great episodes be used for that and then add some nonsense-plot at the end and make one of the most weird, not at all menacing Phantoms the final boss, having a constantly whining, emo Haruto to be the only one who can defeat him. They could have just left those episodes out and it wouldn't have made much difference. Last edited by Suzu; 08-19-2014 at 02:08 AM.. |
