Kanata 03. Why is Japan so obsessed with incest?
On a pure entertainment level, Kanata has been great so far. The animation is GORGEOUS and although coming off the back of Kill la Kill battles feel kinda small, there is imagination, consistency and a sense of detail which Kill la Kill lacked in the majority of its fight scenes, which is what makes Kanata a joy to watch even with its smaller scale. Sadly if you came for anything more than base entertainment, it's pretty much a total wash. Between the generic world that has way more exposition than necessary for something so cliché and the annoying characters, there really isn't much going for this show other than for the most passive of viewers.

Do you need the movies to get the ending of the series?

Not at all. In fact 1 and 2 are just recaps. But the third is actually a new story.

Let's be honest, sub-only people can be pretty arrogant and irrational sometimes. Subs aren't automatically better. If there is a dub that is easily accessible (often there isn't) and voice cast is good that is almost always the way I will go. Do you know why? That is the closest a non-Japanese speaker can get to the original vision of the work. These were created to be watched without subtitles, for people who speak Japanese. Anime is such a visual media, some series more than others, and reading text was not part of the creator's intent. It's not laziness, though I understand people wanting to be able to multitask, it's caring more about the beautiful art and not wanting to miss any of it. I hate that I have rewind sometimes during a sub just to make sure I see everything. It was easier in my teens but it's never ideal. Yes, some dubs have horrible actors and some ruin the dialog buy this isn't 1995. The quality dubs are very common now. Just because you are reading doesn't mean you are getting the best experience. Why do we often end up with multiple translations for different subs? I'm not going to change any minds but I would hope sub-only people will remember their way isn't the only right way. The best way is obviously to speak Japanese but failing that both are acceptable. Also, the vast majority of the population prefers to watch dubbed products. That helps them sell and gives us better access to the content. Solid dubs being distributed in North America during the late 90's/early 2000's really helped open up a different world for fans like us. |

Indeed this is one of the MANY reasons why the dub of Black Lagoon is usually preferred over the sub. Speaking of Black Lagoon saw episode 2 & the torpedo part was FUCKING AWESOMESAUCE.
