The whole premise of Gentoku and even Build in general is repentance. That actions have large impact, but also the act of redemption occurs through action. I like that. A lot.
I really....really....wish they would give Grease an upgrade other than twin breakers. He works his tail off. I agree the lost bottle arc is just flat, as is Evol's inability to be anything more than a cookie cutter bad guy. Utsumi comes across as more maddening in his nature than Evol. Maybe because Chronos was so over the top I was expecting more? Either way, I also had the thought of "Where's Vernage?" She's been absent for a while now. Now that Daddy Build is on the scene.....my money is on him to be the ultimate bad of the series. Kind of a Drive/evil Belt scenario. Quote:
I have a strong feeling that the writer wrote the climax of the series way too soon. Ever since the war broke out, the stakes gets higher and higher with the mysteries of shouichi and Misora alter ego, but the reveal was kind of a letdown. The whole reintroduction of Sento's father came out of nowhere. I guess he's the one that made the new Evolt driver. Also, Mad Rogue is completely pointless and Utsumi is just a badly written character. The show is just buying time and stalling until the finale, which is ashame. Maybe there's production problem with filming the movie, which is why we're jamming in recolor fullbottle and the lost panel. It's like last year with Chronus, where the big bad became too powerful too early. It became a cat and mouse game. However, with build, Evolt just don't feel like destroying planets anymore in favor of the new narrative given to him by the writers. There's also a few retcon with regarding Faust and the fullbottle. Like always, our expectations are High and rider series doesn't really like covering origin story that much or explain it in a good way. |

This arc feels more like the series own sequel...

....Yea, this last Arc seems to be having some trouble having consistency in quality from the other Episodes of this show. I'm trying, I'm REALLY trying to like these Episodes wholeheartedly, but....GEEZ the plot is feeling like it's dragging with not much actual changes that felt earned.
First off, while I am glad we got regular Gentoku back this Episode.....WHY??? Can they stop acting like as if his stupid antics never happened & actually ADDRESS why he was acting like such?!! Just like I said before this Episode, I mentioned how it's so inappropriate for him to be acting like this when his father literally JUST DIED....and turns out this Episode references his father's death. So yea....What was up with that schtick, Gen? Second, Evolt now working towards.....making the Riders into Lost Smash...? First off, HOW MANY different alterations of Smash do we have now? Regulars, Hazard Smash, Hard Smash, Clone Smash....SHEESH. They can't keep doing this forever....(This is partially alongside my complaint of Toei as of recent recycling MoTW at one point in the show) Second, this kinda seems oddly tacked on, and it's honestly really annoying hearing how much Evolt's plans with Earth keep changing. First he wants to destroy Earth via sabotage & maniplation, till he can get his Black Hole Form and destroy everything. But then he changes his mind & instead wants to put humans into despair. Then he wants to turn the Riders into Smash...? He says this like as if this was an endgoal, but this isn't nearly as comparable to how smooth his whole plan was of possessing Ryuga & Sento's bodies. Third....SIGH, PLEASE develop Utsumi, because we STILL have barely any concept of his actual characterization to really make sense of his thoughts through all this & why he's doing it!!!

You know, between Sento running around in a shiny white suit giving dramatic speeches every five seconds, Grease struggling to have true relevance, the occasionally questionable pacing and plotting decisions, and the way I haven't seen a motorbike anywhere in ages, Build's final stretch is seriously starting to remind me of Ghost's.
Still, this episode was pretty solid. Gentoku's finally himself again, and I like that there's an actual narrative backbone here with him and Sento, you know, doubting their legacies, only to get their resolve back at the end. With the overarching plot going bats*** insane lately I appreciate when the episodes have a bit of structure to them. I have a feeling Build will start pulling itself together next week but we'll see. Oh, and speaking of insane bats, am I the only one who likes Mad Rogue? I mean, I don't love him, and he's a glorified goon, but his character seems straightforward enough, and is more fun than if the other Riders were just fighting random robots who don't talk or not-quite-beating Evol constantly. I know a lot of you have lost faith in Build lately, but it's not like they put a new Rider in the show for no reason.

Though to be fair, I think they have an overall plan for the finale that they're trying to build to, and we should expect a few more twists and then a really big finale. As we've seen with the movie trailer and how it's allegedly in continuity to the series as after it, there is likely some big turns and dramatic character upheavals coming from the newer stuff. Though I do kind of have to agree about Grease. Kind of wished he would get one more form. A greased lightning form could be fun. But this does happen with riders pretty often with the side riders. Even Blade, Kabuto, and other series had side riders that never got any kind of upgrades. Side riders getting several upgrades is a relatively new thing since about Kiva, and even then it's a moderately rare thing. |

Broke: Grease needs an upgrade
Woke: Genius is wasted potential because it should be combining multiple bottle combinations instead of "VERY strong". Imagine combining Octopus, Rose and Hedgehog for super spiky whips, or Tank, Diamond and Turtle for ultimate defence

Well, there's that too.
Still, I honestly believe recent episodes of Build would be a lot worse without Mad Rogue around for the others to bounce off of. Quote:
Wokest: I miss Riders who used their default form after episode 20. We'll always have Ex-Aid, Kiwami.

this episode was...about as good as they've been lately. I liked watching Mad Rogue get the living spit kicked out of him up and down that bridge, to the point where he didn't even touch the ground but just got stomped from one side to the other. I liked Greases badass rider kick that tore through a group of baddies. Nice. (He also did a WWF style elbow drop at one point, that was pretty funny to see happen.) I'm biased though. I really like Grease, his suit and character. I don't want to see him get an upgrade, I like the way Grease looks in costume, it's a cool look and a cool costume. ...speaking of cool looks, Rogue looks so badass,...then has that goofy ('fragile' or whatever) red and white sticker stuck to the back of his head. WTF? kind of silly looking. Would look cooler just all black. Not feeling the 'Daddy's Home' character arc happening. Seems ... sort of lame and a little overly dramatic. "He would've got away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids!" But whatever, in for a penny in for a pound. We've rounded third and are headed for home. I think the show has peaked though. For me it was right around the Black Hazzard arc that it felt like the show was just firing on all cylinders. Writing, acting, drama, action, camera work, music,.. everything was really perfect episode after episode. Last edited by KaijuUltraFan; 07-02-2018 at 05:34 PM.. |
