When Nate and Steel unexpectedly clash, it leads to double trouble for the team.

The reason why Nate is upset is so stupid.

I honestly believe that the discord and renewed bond between Nate and Steel seemed slightly more authentic, even if the reasoning behind the discord was a little juvenile. I'm aggravated that they keep pairing those two with a Robotron which preceded the introduction of their counterparts in Go-Busters, but they had an interesting enough story to compensate.
Steel playing basketball can beat a rapping Robo Knight anyday! They name-drop the Cheetah Claws constantly, but they don't use them here. P. S.: If you're gonna clone somebody, why not clone the Commander!? That would help disrupt the team more if you're trying to be villainous. |

The claws will be used in a couple episodes and as for the Commander clone idea, I think that would of required more thought on the creators' part or they just figure this was a a better way to get character development.

I really wanna punch Nate from that thumbnail. Gawd I'm so terrible.
That being said, I can't stand Steel's voice when he first debuted, but come this episode, not only Steel is my favorite character, but his voice actor is getting pretty good as well! It's amazing how Steel is so far the best character just like his Sentai counterpart, but both are actually different, to the point where Steel in this episode has more lines than J per episode. And for Nate though, I can relate with him being upset because he's not good at basketball. Some people just can't be good at something physically (yet he's still a goddamn Ranger). I don't know, Nate just feels off to be a Ranger even though he's basically meant to be Billy and Cam.

I guess that's what they were meant to do, thag even a shrimpy kid can be a Ranger, but idk it doesn't work well for me. I guess another reason is that he kinda looks young. We know he's a child prodigy, but iirc we don't know his actual age, but he does seem a bit too young. Wonder if that's how people felt for Justin back in the day.

I liked the central conflict in this episode a lot, if I'm remembering correctly (It's been a while since I watched these episodes and I can't keep track of episode numbers of even series I love. Unless it's Build 21...). It's got that extra bit of complexity than your standard jealousy episode which helped make it feel a bit more human and grounded -- it's not a simple case of "this character is jealous and that's bad, he should stop being jealous and join in". It actually explores where that jealousy comes from and makes it about more than just that; it has hints of an inferiority complex in there and ideas of how you just don't know how to handle a relationship you've wanted for so long. There's so many sides to Nate being shown off in this episode that makes me admire him and the writers a lot more.
It gives me hope for this era, honestly. This episode is a perfect exemplar of what Beast Morphers is: at its core its storytelling and character building is far beyond anything we got from the last 8 years, but all the trappings and execution of PR's recent offerings is still there -- the way the dialogue is written, the general feel and vibe, the awkwardness and stiffness of it all. Beast Morphers is a very good season struggling to get out from under the weight of this franchise's unfortunate 2010s trends. |

On the Justin thing at least they made him get a built adult body when morphed. Really I could see this working for Nate if they say his suit has a bit of a robotic exoskeleton and with all the genetic fuckery Power Rangers does they could use that as a reason why he has strength and can fight. |
