Still, I really like the Base Form and I still really like Gen as a character. At first the whole 'friends with everyone at the school' thing seemed kinda dumb, but then it reminded me of what Roggenbuck said, 'if someone hates on you, be nice to them back, because then they have to deal with that and whatever issue brought them to hate on you in the first place' or something like that. Gen just has a lot of heart, and a lot of conviction, different to Godai though is he actually acts and shows aspects of these convictions. It makes his interactions with Kengo especially really fun to watch.
Now that I've finished Faiz. (which I found to be pretty darn good!) I've started rewatching OOO. I was watching it as it aired but dropped off around the 25th or so episode because of real life stuff getting in the way. This time I'm going to finish it for sure! Only a couple of episodes in so far but I'm having about as much fun as I remember having the first time around.

Agreed. I think the one thing that really made Fourze so enjoyable for me was Gentarou's character. His constant optimism, cheerfulness and being seemingly unable to loose faith in anyone never failed to brighten my day. Though I guess that was sort of the point of the character if it's true that the show was written to be considerably happier to help cheer people up after the tsunami in early 2011. Anyway. Back to the point. Gentarou's awesome!

I think most importantly though it is done well. Foreverly optimistic characters like him are common in Toku, the difference is, is Gen actually makes mistakes, he actually has an emotional range. He isn't just a print out of a cheesy grin on a stick floating around in front of the camera, steam rolling through all enemies with the power of being the protagonist.

I can't speak for him long term, but seven episodes in and so far he's been a bit of an idiot but an inspiring one who isn't perfect at everything because he is the hero. He succeeds because he chucks logic to the curb and never gives up, no matter how many times he's knocked down. You gotta love that kind of hero.

Gentaro is fun, but he can sometimes ruin tension. It's not like the WizarDriver completely effing over an entire dramatic scene, but sometimes Gentaro's reaction to what just happened seems too forced, almost like he's in denial, but he's not. He's just surprisingly okay with what just went down.

Also I've seen the American adaptation of the Ryuki footage and it was my first Rider series. Most people like to rag on it, I guess because of residual hatred for Masked Rider, but I still think Dragon Knight is a great series that I've watched through three or four times.

I watched a teeny bit of Dragon Knight, just to see what was up (I don't want to actually watch it if I'm watching Ryuki though, how fucking weird would that be) and it was okay. It was an alrigth adaptation from what little I saw. Like how Batfeet is still an early twenty-something snob with a voice that in no way fits the suit. However I thought the actual transformations were way improved over Ryuki's, abmirably unique as it may be, kinda lame reflections spin onto the dude and he's a rider. Then again Dragon Knight, I think, came out quite some time after Ryuki, so it would've had more effects budget and shit.
BTW, I actually have a few questions and comments before I continue Ryuki. Who is this Olja snake guy? He hasn't shown up yet just he seems to be everywhere and he looks awesome. Is he the villain? All the riders in this show looks awesome and important, like Tiger or Zolda (who I may get after Ryuki since his contract monster seems to be made of BIG FUCKING GUNS that he can then use) so maybe he's just a really awesome looking bit character. Also, do the production values ever improve? It's hardly destroying my experience or making the show look awful, but it's just noticably odd how the framerate and shit is not like any other rider series. Also also, I think I might wait until my Figuarts Ryuki ships before I continue because it'd be nice to watch a Rider show for the first time with some representation of the rider themself. Plus I actually quite enjoy the theme song, but the actual intro visuals are cheapsville. I hope they improve it as time goes on. (or ditch that lame shot of the lamesmobile at least) Especially knowing this comes after Agito, where even though the show wasn't good to me, I think it has the best intro of any series ever. (the first version is, though) Eh, it's alright. It'd be better if it wasn't haunting me in my sleep because they drilled it into my head. It also made every fight feel identical. It was certainly no "Count Zero" which I could listen to on a loop. (at least until the asstacular techno-bubble remix crap in the later stretch) Then again one of my main complaints with Agito was how offensive to the ears it was. Bad vocal performances, same three scores repeated ad nauseum, generic sound effects. |

That said, I thought the acting in the series was fine, although I am gaging that more in a comparison to what Power Rangers has to offer because comparing these tiny budget niche kids dramas and the casts of unknowns they have to other mediums with more recognised actors is a little unfair. Still with THAT SAID it looks like it isn't all Oscars on the original side either, as shows like Kuuga showcased some absolutely terrible acting.

Blade 4 and 5
All these things/people spontaneously combusting reminds me of Ghostbusters 2. Though, I suspect it's an Undead at work. Speaking of which, whoever released the Undead...had the goal of gaining eternal life, eh? Makes sense, I suppose. Even if the Undead aren't really undead and just...various monstrosities. Kenzaki's probably the most superhero-y out of all of the main riders I've seen so far. Parents die in fire when he was young, since then he vowed to save everyone. Pretty cool, all in all. Also, I'm highly unsurprised that Koutaro spilled Kenzaki's identity to his little sister... Hajime getting weird psychic messages from some Undead, presumably. That can't bode well for him... Hajime seems like a pretty good guy too. Even if he is bizarrely 100% more antisocial when he's in his Rider state. I also liked that Kenzaki figured out Hajime's identity fairly quickly. It'd be kind of annoying to have a dozen episodes with him having no idea who the third Rider was when it's that obvious. I know Tachibana's angry and all because he slowly dying...but if he was willing to ask for help, it seems like things'd go easier for him... Also, I've mentioned this before, but it's really a nice change of pace to have these fights all in different locations that aren't a city. I like fights in a city, I don't mind them at all. But there's been...snowy hills, caves, beaches, forests. I like the variety. I guess it's all because it's in a rural type area. |
