The problem is the negative connotations the word has. No matter how swashbuckling the adventures are, people will bitch about pirates being the heroes regardless.

How bad can pirates be for kids when Disney is milking the pirate name for all ages? Yes, there's Pirates of the Caribbean for older audiences but also Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy and Jake and the Neverland Pirates for younger audiences.

Because most of the time in kid's programming, the pirate is used as a villain or comic relief ploy, never really as the main hero. True there are some shows that break this mold, but 95% it's a pirate being villainous. Of course it wouldn't be the first time Power Rangers was close to pirates...
