I don't like TV-N because they're literally the prime example of terrible fansubbers. Like they'll leave entire phrases untranslated, even when it's EASY to just use an English word (like for Magiranger they use "o-baka-chan-tachi" instead of just "idiots") or use the English version to keep a joke (in Den-O they leave his final attack as Densha Giri, but the joke is that it's a lame name because it literally means "Train Slash").
One of the worst though is when they pretty much translated an important line in Gaim (spoilers if you haven't watched it) that this blogpost can explain better than I can. Like I get it, people can like what fansub group they want, but I just think they're bad. I mean, I understand that Over-Time gets a little crazy with translating things (like I'm not a big fan of them translating Karo and Daikaan as Menasters and Malistates, even IF they're pretty good puns), but Over-Time has a lot more accuracy.

I really want to like this show. Seriously, I do. But I'm already getting bad vibrations from the third episode even though this ones better than the first two.
I won't focus on the negatives because that has been covered already. Instead, let's look at the positives. + They have massaged to keep the space opera feeling still. Even if the fight took place on Generic Toku Beach, somehow, the illusion of fantasy. + SasoriOrange wasn't immediately recruited. + The stupid line by Lucky about giving up in revenge actually drew a chuckle from me. It was bad enough to be good in my opinion. + Raptor 238 has surprising depth. Frustrated Secretary robot who nonetheless is idealistic isn't anything groundbreaking but it feels so in Kyuuranger. + KyuuRenOh was already one of my favorite Sentai robots but this episode even gave us transforming enemy robot ship! Which also looked cool! Kyuuranger has the best robot fight scenes in my opinion. |

Wow. The continued negative reaction to this show stunning to me. I loved this episode as much as the first two!
I'm gonna be avoiding these episode discussions from now on. Catch you in the other threads. |

If the negative reactions annoy and threaten to take the fun out of a show for you, I know they have that effect on me, stop reading them, it's a good idea. Maybe you can come back every 5 episodes or so and see if the people who didn’t like it dropped it. |

Well I thought this was pretty solid. Probably not as good as last week, but still way better than the premiere. I liked how they fleshed out Champ. I didn't like how he just kind of laid on the ground until the mecha action started, but at least he got that much. I really like how they're playing up the whole idea of Stinger being an evil-ish Kyuranger for at least a bit. I'm a sucker for stuff like that, so I'm happy to see it. Especially since he's doing this of his own will rather than being coerced in some way like Misao back in Zyuohger.
Also, apparently they're heading to Earth next episode? Hopefully they don't stay there too long. It'd be a real shame for Kyuranger to lose one of the biggest points in its favor so soon. Quote:
No? Okay... Anyway, I'm thinking there's a chance once the whole team is assembled the focus will get more even and right now they're just using Lucky as a sort of anchor for the viewer. Which, now that I think about it, helps explain why everyone's hatred of Lucky is interfering so much with their enjoyment of the show. Huh. Quote:
I guess I'm just not sure what people are expecting here? Pretty much every Sentai I've ever seen takes a couple episodes to really get going, so I have trouble really caring or worrying when something isn't immediately going right. The characters especially seem pretty much on par with any other show by its third episode, for how much of a point of contention they've been. I think if Lucky, the guy who's somewhat unfortunately meant to be the audience surrogate, were just clicking with people, the show would suddenly seem way better. Quote:

Well, it's simple.
Lucky is the main character. No dancing around that subject. It's just how Sentai is. People don't like Lucky. They find him obnoxious and his more...Charming traits, one could say, are quickly drowned out by his less charming ones. Especially in these early episodes where he's basically a walking signal flare that says lucky more times than the average person blinks. So a lot of people are left with a show following a character they don't like. All the little issues go from otherwise mild annoyances into giant problems with a blaring klaxon simply because they're not enjoying themselves enough to ignore them.

Yeah, I guess. The really sad part is that I don't even really like Lucky that much. I'm just not horribly bothered by him for whatever reasons.
That's actually why I think the second episode was better than this one. Here's the thing: Lucky, despite being the main character, also isn't the main character. He's sort of a generic, heroic dude, and his characterization seems deliberately geared less towards being able to carry a show and more towards helping the other characters shine. When they use him in that fashion, making him feel more behind everyone than in front, I find he works pretty well. All three episodes so far have more or less attempted that. The premiere undercut itself by making the dude the episode was "supposed" to be about, Garu, only show up like halfway through. This week undercut what could've easily worked by making the somewhat inexplicable decision to have Champ sit there twiddling his thumbs or something while Lucky fights Stinger during the climax, once again making the character who's clearly supposed to be in focus go out of focus. Last week, however, I think handled its plot extremely well. Lucky is there to kickstart the plot, and to teach Naga a lesson about friendship simply by innocuously mentioning it, rather than giving a big dramatic speech. That's it. The episode was about Naga and Balance and it FELT like it was at all times. It felt like something when Naga decides to stick with Lucky. It felt like something when Balance decides to go back and rescue the both of them. Here? I guess Champ understood what Lucky was saying? But he also decided to take a nap for like 4 minutes right after that scene (after the dramatic music swell and the flashback to thematically important dialogue, no less!), and then at the end his one line of dialogue to wrap things up is basically "yo f*** that Stinger guy", so... um, okay then? It's such an easily salvageable thing, too. Either have Champ get over himself, like you suggested, and have the big climax with Lucky AND him, or, if you wanted this to go unresolved so you can play up that tension for a while, which they did, don't make it look like you're going to resolve it. I thought episode 2 was genuinely pretty excellent, but this week has shaken the faith it built up a little. I really hope these sloppier episodes turn out to be the exception and not the norm in the long run.

Ehh this episode was ok, just ok. New problems that came with this episode are . . .
Xiao: If the situation did not involve trying to stop a planet from exploding and all but two of the rangers being poisoned then his comedy routine would be fine but it didn't which kinda makes him appear as a dumbass to me. Also since he is suppose to be the commander as well makes it worse unless he can be serious. All this has me VERY worried because he will be my favorite color of ranger. Poison: How did stinger's poison affect Balance and Champ? Sorry but that's just stupid unless his poison can also be corrosive. Kyutama: So wait not all Kyutama are for Kyurangers to transform? Well that sucks because cancer is probably one of the attack ones then. Also where did they come from and how did Xiao get them? Kyutama might be one annoying problem I have with this show. As for the good Lucky using Gemini: I loved this part only because I could hear people screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" and that made me happy. Raptor: She seems to be the only Kyuranger I will like the most which is surprising for me. She is the one and only, Raptor Moon! Yay! With Zyuohger I was already hooked by episode 3 and had more of an idea what the rangers were like as characters. But Kyuranger I only been watching in hopes it does get better while they do need to make up on their characters. While I may be calling it too early, I do feel like the Jark Matter will be boring villains like Zyuohger's. Oh Fish how did you feel about Onari from Ghost? I ask because if you liked him then that might be why Lucky does not bother you as much as he bothers others. |
