I knew it wouldn't have a sequel and thank god for that.

I like the 2017 PR movie over the MMPR show to be honest. The 2017 movie cast feels like more like characters than the Save by the Bell stereotypes and Rita feel like a villain with some type of motivation than her MMPR TV show counterpart.

Seriously, this movie was fated to the failure.

Power Rangers by all means was not a bad film. What made it a financial failure IMO is some of the creative design choices made for the film. The suits looked a little too alien while at the same time trying to resemble suits found in the MCU and DCEU instead of sticking to/closely resembling the spandex Power Rangers is known for (if Spider-Man can wear skin tight suits, why not Power Rangers? Why does everything have to resemble Iron Man? Even Spider-Man isn't completely safe but at least is given an option). Goldar looking like a melted glob of American cheese didn't help. And this was the opportunity to see the fan favorite Dino Megazord/Daizyujin on the big screen in CGI glory. Instead we got whatever that was with a spider-mastodon.
All that was too much of a departure from the source material for people to justify seeing it in theaters. The cast was great, and I wish Hasbro would find a way to include them in the future. But I totally understand wanting to wash their hands of that film. Plus Lionsgate probably owns portions of the creative direction of that film Hasbro could not touch unless they made a film through them; much like how MMPR the Movie is owned by 20th Century Fox (Disney). Now I just hope Hasbro/Paramount's reboot is loosely connected to the TV show and not another MMPR/Zyuranger rehash. Maybe an original story following a new team (original, comic based, or from a Sentai that wasn't adapted) and build up to Shattered Grid. Last edited by acdcguy; 07-25-2019 at 10:27 AM.. |

Another thing I wanna add, the fight scenes are pretty subpar. You know it's bad when that practice choreography looks more Power Rangers/Sentai-ish than the actual movie. https://youtu.be/NnTeO6hAwWY

The next reboot will have a very tough task in topping the PR17 cast. That group was incredible.

I would definitely agree about the design choices. There's nothing wrong with going for a different aesthetic and direction, of course, but the designs were very clearly motivated by the same 'grittier, realistic, super serious' take on the much more colourful and fun source material that is present in other big movie franchises like Transformers and the MCU.
In general I feel there's a sort of stigma in western society against embracing the ridiculous, embracing the fun -- it's why I was very much drawn to things like Sentai and Kamen Rider in the first place, because not only are they unafraid of going over the top but they're very clearly enthusiastic about doing it, and almost all their big-budget movies and other media never stray from that. I do like many things about the Lionsgate movie, but this kind of stigma and trend is certainly what I felt hurt it the most. Not that they tackled serious issues; not that they went for teen drama; not even that there was a larger focus than usual on the non-action elements -- but that it was felt they couldn't co-exist alongside spandex suits, a silly space witch & her band of misfits, and simplistic robot dinosaurs that combine into prehistoric optimus prime with a lightning sword. You can still be very silly and over-the-top and have a lot of fun while still dealing with serious topics and issues -- and if I may indulge in my opinions, I think that's actually one of the best ways to do it. How can you ask someone to smile if you're not willing to laugh? |
