I'm currently reading Laurell K. Hamilton's "Affliction" right now.

The Superman Chronicles Volume I, AKA stories from the time where Superman was a violent psychopath of cartoonish caliber.
For example, this excerpt from Action Comics #12, wherein Superman declared war on reckless drivers: Last edited by KRX; 02-18-2015 at 01:32 AM.. |

Shingetsutan Tsukihime: Have you ever had to atone for your mistakes? Have you ever hurt someone with no real reason?
Shiki Tohno has to atone for a sin unlike any other, he brutally murdered a stranger with no reason or logic, and when the person he "killed" returns to settle things, his life will change forever. So... I might have developed a bit of an unhealthy obsession with Tsukihime in the past few months, I've always enjoyed Type-Moon works, and their debut Visual Novel somehow managed to hit me in all the right spots. So I've really, really been into all of it's media. I can stop whenever I want to. Totally. Maybe... Anyways, let's leave that up for the shrink. Shingetsutan Tsukihime is the manga adaptation... of the anime adaptation... and anime so hated by the fandom that people like to pretend it never happened. So this sounds like an inevitable trainwreck. But... it's not, in fact it's probably the best way to experience the story for most casual readers. How? Simple, the anime actually had great ideas on how to adapt the story, and it showed a lot of care and love, it just was burdened with awful production values. The manga mostly focuses on Arcueid's route adding elements from Ciel's and Akiha's, which results in a more constant pace, more depth and a healthy does of extra characterization for the main antagonist, which is without a doubt the main strenght of the work, as it creates a stronger narrative overall. The art adapts the world very well, the combat is breathtaking, the characterization is spot on, the action is superb and full of nods to the novel and fighting games. Is it flawless? No, there are a few key concepts I wish had been expanded on. Is it a 100% accurate adaptation? Heck no. But it never aimed at that, nor does it need to, it's really good as as a standalone manga, and it made relive many feels almost like the first time. |

After reading Divergent, I am now reading it's sequel, Insurgent before the movie premieres on the big screen.

Got the first 7 volumes of Pokémon Adventures in the mail from Amazon today. About time I read into this part of the franchise. I should finish the whole Kanto Arc before next week.

I'm about halfway through the first book of John Birmingham's new trilogy, Emergence. I think I'm going to have to import the second and third books from Australia, though, since the U.S. release dates are bonkers. He's a heck of a writer. His Axis of Time and Disappearance series are both hella-awesome.

The more I read Mazinger Z, the less I want to.
I think this started right around the time Ashura's daughters showed up. Talk about gratuitous nudity for no other reason than boobs. Also gore, really disturbing graphic violence intertwined with sexual imagery. This would be somewhat fine if the goddamn tone could be figured out. Funny, horror, perverse, every panel is different, it's all over the place and the pacing is getting really bad. Everything that's set up is resolved in just a few pages, it feels incredibly rushed. I'm also really getting sick of how Sayaka is being handled. She was so great and promising at the beginning of the series. Now she's just a plot device, a character that's sole existence is to give Koji a goal, for the villains to threaten and nothing more. Again, this problem mainly started around the same time Ashura's daughters were introduced. Later on She finally gets a new robot and I figure that maybe we'll get some scenes of her kicking ass, since she has something more up to par. Nope. As soon as she leaves we have her upside down chained to a crucifix with the mech's legs spread. Fucking. Subtle. But then I noticed a problem. The mech is Diana A. Diana A was not in the original Manga. Which means someone fucked up and at some point the volumes switched from the original Manga to the TV Manga. So now I gotta go back and figure out when the hell this happened. At the very least I know it was sometime after Ashura's Daughters ordeal. I'm really hoping that this is at least the reason for the most recent pacing and character issues, if not everything. |
