I loved it. Reminded me of something like Surprise Future, which means it's pretty much everything you could ask for from a Rider movie. It comes out of the gate strong by getting to the premise within the first few minutes, and watching Build get chased around was crazy entertaining. I love it when they write scenes that are clearly designed specifically to be fun for the extras, and this is the perfect example of that. The movie starts picking up speed rapidly from this point and pulls off a solid balancing act by focusing the movie squarely on Sento (something that was often not true of the series itself), without screwing over anyone else too badly. I mean, any die-hard Mad Rogue fans will be disappointed, but those don't exist, so it's fine. The narrative here keeps its attention where it needs to be and doesn't clutter up the story with anything unnecessary.
Much like True Ending, Be The One tries its hand at enticing the viewer with a bit more relevance to the show than usual, and it too faces the question of how to do that while still letting the TV series stand on its own. For Build, the answer seems to be making the juicy revelations much less juicy than they sound at first. Learning there were three more random guys helping Evolt pull the strings the whole time sounds cool, and yet makes little difference when all is said and done. This isn't necessarily a bad thing (and might even be the best way to do it), but the villains here definitely strike me as the weak link of the film. They serve their purpose well, but aside from Kamen Rider Blood looking cool, there's little memorable about them. They have Evolt's generic motivations and goals with little of his charisma. That being said, the drama with Sento that's at the heart of the story is well done, and acts as a microcosm of the show's themes, which is always good to see in a summer movie. What's more, the direction here is great. I'm now aware to expect this from Kamihoriuchi, but lots of shots here really put the movie in this movie, for lack of a better description. Even the way the credits roll is more artsy than usual. Overall I was as impressed as I usually am with Build. The things that bothered me most are extremely minor nitpicks. Namely, I was pretty sure the Rabbit and Dragon Bottles stayed their new colors on TV, but even if I'm right about that, the shenanigans the show pulled with the Dragon Jelly already made me aware Build is willing to play a bit loose with continuity for dramatic effect. Also Zi-O's cameo just came off as silly, but it's a total nonissue given its role as a simple after-credits bonus preview. It would've been much cooler to someone who hasn't already been seeing Zi-O fight dudes every week for months now.

I agree there were quite a few shots (like Grease jumping and fighting down the escalator) that were framed really well. Quite a few times I stopped to be like, "that's a great shot and angle."
I liked the small bits of humor, they popped up randomly enough that I laughed. When Build was laying low and hiding but then is trying to take pics of the dogs and sees the crowd looking at him and is like, "Damn, you're dumb". Or when Mad-Rogue brought the belts and Grease is like, "You expect us to beg!!?" then looks over and Rogue is already on his knees begging. Lol. The movie was good, the fight scenes were good. The fighting styles were good. Even Sawa got a moment to shine and do some cool fight stuff. Even the after credits scene was pretty cool. Pointless, but still kind of cool. Oh, and when the Blood people got exploded at the end of a fight, I liked how you saw chunks and "splash" mixed in with the explosion. Usually it's just an explosion but this looked just a tiny bit more visceral and I liked it a lot. It looked more like 'something' exploded instead of just an explosion. |

Tbh, I was bored with the first half of the movie! Like the show, they tried reconning many things to fit
Cheesy new narratives. it work well for some movies like mcu, but fail for xmen. the trio of villains arent as charismatic as evolt and the two guys are forcing cheesy lines in the most old school ovrr the top acting. love the mix mashed suit though. kind of wish this was an alternate ending or epilogue movie. the movie also ruin most of the last quarter of build for a lot of fans. |

It would've been much cooler to someone who hasn't already been seeing Zi-O fight dudes every week for months now. I've never expected build to continuously explain details with flashbacks and "facts" throughout the show when it started airing. It's nice to see a show that comtinously raises questions and answering them as well as dealing with moral obiligations and hope as a major theme. More said, More doing as well. However, the more revelation in the later Half kind of downplay a lot ot storytelling like how Katsuragi's intelligences, innovations, and "villain/selfish" side are not what we believed. The build driver is credit to Shinobu, the father in terms mimick the evolt's driver. Also, now the movie just make Evolt less of a mastermind with three helping hands. The same with Shouichi isn't the mastermind, but just someone manipulated and possessed by an alien. The whole Martians' mythology vs the truth given was quite a letdown. The 30s was still strong with fast pace action. Then hits the forgettable 40s because of the movie interference as well as over powered Evolt that sometimes fight equally with Genius, but other times massively stronger than Genius. Genius didn't event ultilize any Clever combos or unique fighting styles like previous final form incarnations. Heck, RR TT was cooler. |

I guess I tend to view the movies as 'What If?/Elseworld' types of things. I guess that's why they never really bother me. They're just one-off spin-off things.

Despite the fact that, to varying degrees of success, the shows themselves tend to go out of their way to set up the Summer Movies nowadays?

I really enjoyed this. I'm a massive Build fan anyway, so you might think that's a given, but I loved Ex-Aid, and I'll be the first to admit last year's Final Ending is a little weak. Be The One, on the other hand, is the best summer film we've had since Surprise Future, and that's because it works with the series. A few months on from Build, and my love is a little softened with time, but the links to Sento's character arc, his relationship with his dad (and adoptive dad Evolt, really), and his brother-in-arms/best friend Banjou are at the forefront here, and that kind of character stuff was always my favourite thing about Build. Sento gets his time to shine, and I love him.
Of course, he doesn't hog *all* the spotlight. Evil Banjou probably has the most charisma of all the villains (excluding Evolt - his scene at the end is enough to show that), but as generic movie villains, they're fine. Evolt had some other guys with him, and now they're sick of him dicking them about? Sure, why not? I can roll with that. Blood is a badass design, but as someone else already said, that's the best thing. Especially when I feel like the whole "You're a fake hero" bit was already done better in-show. I still like it, especially exploring the public's feelings towards the Kamen Riders as a tool of combat, not as a Spider-Man style hero, but maybe a little more of that, instead of "And now I've brainwashed everyone!" It gives us fun chase scenes (and more badass Sawa), so that's good, but Toku uses plain brainwashing so much. Maybe something more subtle, like it implies? I don't know, I'm rambling. Also, Beardo and Potato Farmer are still perfect comedy duo, and the scene in the basement shows it. Especially when Utsumi shows up. And Grease gets to use his Double Twin Breaker upgrade again! Yay! If only he'd used that instead of Blizzard, he'd still be alive. Maybe. Probably not. Minor nitpicks aside (the CGI in the final battle is really kinda dodge, for the biggest of those), this is a great Rider film. Plus, it continues the "Baron shows up in every show ever" streak, and I respect that. Speaking of, Zi-O cameo was weird, but I can live with it. Anyone that thinks Sougo is annoying in show should be thankful we didn't get AU Movie Sougo.

I swear to god, I literally burst out laughing with that "live ammo" scene.

Sometimes i really like the movies too. The Faiz movie i enjoyed a lot. And sometimes it's just nice to see the characters again even if it's not that great a movie. |
