Hello everyone,
Since this is my first real post aside from my little introduction in the "new member" part of this board i thought i'd start of by letting you know how i feel about this hobby currently and see how everyone reacts. The thing is, Mighty morphin power rangers was one of the biggest influences of my childhood and i have been a fan ever since. offcourse as a kid i had no idea that what i was seeing was basiclly a japanse tv show with american actors fitted in, that i was... in some ways...watching a scam and not the real thing...same goes with other series that aired in the 90's such as vr troopers and masked rider and beetleborgs, as a kid i thought it was american and to be honest to first time i found out about the real history of these shows many years ago,i was kinda shocked....then got intrigued and started looking up a ton of videos and episodes online of diffrent stuff to try to get into it....then got dissapointed and reverted back to simply loving the power rangers as i had always knew them. i just turned 27 this month and yes i still love power rangers. Over the years i have tried over and over again to get into kamen rider, sentai and other original japanese stuff but there's always something that keeps me from getting pulled in...i can't really put it into 1 word it's more of a general feeling i get when watching the japanese stuff...i guess i miss the charm of my good ol' american power rangers and this is not meant in a disrespectfull manner at all but...the japanese actors all tend to look the same to me and the language gets irritating to listen to for long periods of time. then why do i keep trying to get into it ?...well...by snooping around boards and reading praise after praise about series.. &... and how much better it is than the american versions an how butchered some of the american scenes seem to be, i always find myself intrested enough to want to see the real thing, then inevitably get bored again when i realize that i'm not watching "power rangers" as i have always loved them. i've also tried to get into kamen rider mainly because i freaking love most of the rider costumes and the action always seemed to be more "bas ass" than the general ranger stuff. but again, everytime i try following a series online,i stick with it for 3 or 4 episodes and then go back to american power rangers. Now...a lot of the stuff i tried watching online didn't have subs so i have spend a lot of time watching random kamen rider episodes from diffrent series and not knowing what the hell was going on storywise and getting annoyed at the "ping yong haiii" language lol. Again, no disrespect to the japanese meant, i just find it odd from myself that i claim to love this genre then on the other hand not really knowing sh*t about it. Sometimes i get the feeling i'd be better off sticking to watching an collecting mighty morphin era stuff since i think it's pretty safe to say that nothing will ever top those years for me...no matter how advanced the costumes get and how smooth the special effects and cgi looks now compared to the early 90's, the original charm has never been matched...maybe it's just me wearing rose tinted glasses i dunno...i'm glad i became a member here and i'm going to read up as much i can about foreign (to me at least) series and i still hope to catch the bug tbh, i WANT to like all of this and from a purely visual perspective i already do, i'm just to uneducated on mostly everything aside from american MMPR to reeeaaally be able to enjoy it i'd dare say. |

Hi fuzzy buddy!
I was reluctant to try out Japanese tokusatsu at first, too. Than I watched Kamen Rider W, and was instantly hooked. Initially, I used YouTube, until all of the episodes were taken down. For a while, I couldn't watch anything. Then I discovered Henshin Fever. They have subbed episodes of every Rider series (and may very well have every subbed episode of Kamen Rider). My addiction has increased thanks to them. Besides, your in luck. Kamen Rider Wizard is fast approaching, and you should be able to enjoy the full series, without confusion as to what the story is. |

I think that you had a good childhood memory, so you are trying hard to recapture that nostalgia, it's not so much of the content that you are watching now that's eluding you, but the environment in which you used to watch the show as a kid. I've never found any of the sentai series (that I've watched) comes even close that feeling of campy-ness that the 90's MMPR captured. I think you are better off watching dubbed series as they come out, enjoy Gokaiger when it becomes Super Megaforce I guess.

First of all, don't think of PR as a "Scam."
PR is it's own series that borrows suits from another show. Anyway, it's fine that the Sentai can't keep you entertained. Contrary to what some more hardcore fans would say, you don't even have to like Sentai in the slightest to be a Toku fan. The Power Rangers aren't bastardizations of the Sentai. They're often their own stories that only has the same mecha and suits from the Sentai, and it's glorious (Epic space opera vs Teenagers playing video games? Yeah, gimme In Space over Megaranger). I hope that one day you'll come across a Sentai that'll keep your interest. (Also, you can't watch random KR episodes. KR is A LOT more plot and story heavy). |

I've honestly never had this problem. While I did still sorta grow up with Power Rangers, I don't hold them nearly as close as most other users here do. Hell, I prided myself when I first succeeded in not watching any episodes of a season(RPM, though ironically, I probably would have enjoyed it more than any previous season). When I first heard about Super Sentai in late 2010, I welcomed the idea with open arms(even though I didn't see any series until early this year).
Now if this happened with, say, Transformers, that'd be a different story. Despite my lack of membership on TFW, I've held Transformers a lot dearer to myself than Power Rangers all my life, and seeing a show I grew up with in Japanese would probably be weirder to me.

Eh. Japan doesn't know how to make a TF series anyway.
They all suck. |

Thanks for the reply's so far everyone.
I'm sure a lot of my fondness of Mighty morphin has to do with it being my first experiance with this form of entertainment and me being a kid at the right time to get sucked in the hype. it's not that i'm so one sided that i can't enjoy anything else tho, i've seen some terrific stuff from other series, both american and japanese, altho tastes might differ...to be honest i liked wild force a lot, then found out it frequently pops up in peoples "worst seasons" type of lists. With kamen rider my knowledge is just too unexistend and i would need to find a few good places to get complete series to start watching, i mainly only liked that franchise because i love the beetle/bug themed armors, visually they attract me right away, but i admit all i know is the american masked rider show from the 90's and other than that watching some random episodes on youtube and not understanding much of them because as someone above me stated, it seems to be much more story driven and not good for ranomdly jumping in. I always loved the look and feel of the Bioman series but never really watched it as a kid because it only aired on some french tv station, with french language and well, that was just not attractive...if i could see it in english, either dubbed or subbed, i'll definatly give it another shot. I have tried older sentai series as well but also just some random stuff i found on youtube since i didn't know where to look for dedicated episodes in order to start from the beginning, but from i've seen some are really good, others come across as a little goofy to me but there seems to be at least a few sentai series that might get my attention if i ever find a way to watch them correctly in order. anyway, keep your recommedations and thoughts coming guys, meanwhile i'm gonna further educate myself by reading up around here thanks |
