I didn't want Misao to be a "badass". I wanted Misao to be a likeable character. Misao is an example of when a character exists just to sell toys; from his super vague backstory it was clear that the writers didn't really know what to do with him.
By the way, this comment of "It's your opinion" is redundant and pointless. Everything said by everyone here is an opinion and it's always expressed as a statement. "It's your opinion!" is always lobbed at something the responding person disagrees with as though that's an actual point. You want a character who just exists to sell toys? See the Washio brothers in Build because all they do is transform and fight, have a boring backstory of being child soldiers and a single scene showing any resemblance of growth. Misao's a character who grows and has his personal problems, he has self esteem issues, feels guilt about how THREE people died to have their powers forced upon him, One could argue Misao's on the spectrum of autism, which tbh I wouldn't be surprised with as Misao reminds me a LOT of a friend of mine irl who's got autistim, especially with how easy it is to upset them and their self esteem issues. Misao's also incredibly awkward in social situations as he overreacts to just having friends or seeing some of his friends fight, meaning he cherishes his fellow Rangers. If he was really just there to 'sell toys' he wouldn't even had gotten his personality back after being rescued from Genis, which still scares him. You say that but you literally said did that very thing in the Build episode 40 thread today

The writers knew exactly what they were doing with him. He was socially awkward with an inferiority complex along with a massive guilt issue over the fact that 3 Zyumens were killed to create his powers. He was lonely, awkward, and just wanted to do what he could for his friends. He suffered a mild form of PTSD, and it showed from his occasional breakdowns. Misao was literally the 2nd most defined character in Zyuohger behind Yamato...

From what I've seen so far, ToQger is pretty good (1-19 so far), and so is Zyuohger (1-7 so far). Kyoryuger is also pure joy (1-8 so far).
I haven't seen enough of all these shows since I'm taking a break from Toku, but they all seem very well-done. |

I will say, as much as I did like Misao and as much as I agree that the direction with his character was a very good change of pace... they could have dealt with the issues he raised much, MUCH better. They really didn't need to follow a narrative that depression and PTSD is something annoying for the people around you and something that you should just 'snap' out of when someone shouts something at you.
It's a bit difficult for me to raise criticism of moral issues and how ethical questions are handled in Sentai/Rider because they're shows from a completely different culture I have no direct experience with; and hence any criticism I raise does inevitably run into the issue of not understanding how the issue is viewed within the context of that culture and society -- and hence anything I say, even if technically correct, could end up just being very unhelpful because it fails to understand the status of those moral issues in that society. But it's really hard to watch things like Leo essentially telling Misao to just get over it and see that framed positively rather than a huge mistake on Leo's part.

Misao's backstory is summed up in just one scene that's played as a parody of deep drama. He's just some guy with no friends that Genis happens to find one day and give him power. No real explanation for his arsenal beyond "Oh Genis just had them and modified them." Gee, how interesting. It's just like all those Zyuoh Cubes that happen to be on Earth for some reason and appear when the next toy debuts. That doesn't sound like a deeply planned script to me.
Even if you wanted to claim that Misao has PTSD, this is hardly the way to go about executing it. It doesn't even come across as PTSD: I never thought PTSD when I saw him on screen. Just as Leo says, it comes across as an annoying guy who whimpers in a corner over the stupidest things. So no, sorry, I don't find Misao compelling. I might have liked his inner monologues with the three Zyumen more if they weren't always being played for comedy. But then the entire concept of the Zyumen needed to be redone in my view. |

...The hell are you talking about Dogold having "footy pajamas"? He has torn pants and big feet. Did you actually look at the design in any detail or are you just making shit up to say that the series is bad?
Also, saying Misao is bad is an objectively wrong opinion, how did I miss you saying that in the original post. Misao is one of the best rangers in the last half a decade, and is incredibly relatable. He has a handful of writing issues, but literally everything does. It mostly sounds to me like you don't like fun, which means you should probably go and watch Kiva or Decade and stay away from good series |

If you're only looking at that for the PTSD you're trying to find a needle in a cup of orange juice, the PTSD is because those Zyumen who haunt him? They're figments of his imagination because of his survivor's guilt and the PTSD. God, you're acting like that guy who yelled "WHY IS EMU A DOCTOR INSTEAD OF AN INTERN" or "HOW DID THE KYURANGERS PERSONALITIES GET SWAPPED I WASN'T PAYING ATTENTION!"

And you can do it with Jetman up to Gaoranger now although age is also a tricky factor
