Anyone into Blue Blazes ?
It's not really a toku show, it's about geeky arts students in the early 80's who are into manga, anime and toku stuff. It's also some Fukuda Yuichi work (The Hero Yoshihiko). The serie is an adaptation of a manga by Kazuhiko Shimamoto. It's partially an autobiography, and partially a parody. During Shimamoto days in Osaka Arts University, he met various people who later became famous in manga and anime industry, like Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) whose character is over the the top and hilarious (he pulls out random antics from Ultraman or Kamen Rider from nowhere). There are two main plots : Shimamoto's avatar struggle to get a contract with an editor, while Anno and his friends found an opportunity to start an animation work, which will later lead to the formation of the studio Gainax.

Yeah, this is a fantastic series! Love how over-the-top the characters are and the caricature of Anno they use in this is hilarious. I think we're already past the half-way point which hurts a bit as I could watch this series forever. Much love to O-T for subbing it - I never would have known about it if not for them.
Side Note: you can find Anno's actual student film online and it's quite a bit different (and more impressive) than just him in a t-shit with a mock ultra timer lol. Although, the version featured in the show is way more entertaining. |
