Okay, all caught up.
Having watched episode 15, I'm starting to get reminded of Daimajin Kanon. Komon's seemingly endless downwards spiral into depression is very reminiscent of early series Kanon and her similarly endless moping. Given the overall dark nature of Nexus, I don't think Komon is going to be rediscovering his inner joy and singing his heart out anytime soon. Especially not with Darth Jabi going all Palpatine on his ass at least twice an episode. Is it me, or does Mephisto seem weaker than Faust? Either that or Himeya seriously leveled up since those episodes. Faust was routinely kicking Nexus's ass, but Nexus seems to be faring much better against Mephisto. And oh hey, the next episode has more bipedal molerat and ghost Riko. These aren't starting to get old. So, yesterday I checked out the first couple episodes of the Ultraman series that followed Nexus: Max. It's a very interesting contrast and clearly a reaction to Nexus's darkness and subsequent unpopularity. Max is a much happier and more conventional show - the main character is again a new recruit in the monster-fighting unit (whose CGI jets suck compared to the Chesters, it must be said) - but the relationships are very different. The first episode ends with the female member of the team coming out to confront Kaito (the hero). After fourteen episodes of Nexus I was expecting her to chew him out and tell him to stay out of her way. Instead she was nice and welcomed him to the team. It really threw me after five weeks of Darth Jabi. I think I'm going to keep up with Max while we're doing these Nexus weeks, just for the contrast. |

Fell behind a tad due to a borked 14 and 15 download and being busy these last few weeks. Man, these episodes were mind fuckery all around. Komon being haunted by Riko, Nosfer capturing that family and turning the parents into underling, and then the new Chester blowing Nosfer up...man. I can see why kids wouldn't like this but this is the stuff I love in Toku show. Also, I like how Mizorogi's Ultra form is called Mephisto, after having Faust around. I forget the name of the story of the top of my head, but I like the complete allusion to it. Finally, Nagi being nice? Did hell freeze? Then again, her going on about hating Beasts and fighting solely with the angery is bad. So it's two steeps forward, one step back for her.
