When Kamen Rider was reborn in 2000, I was a big fan. Mostly cause the show was so dramatic and realistic and not as childish as Super Sentai. Back then, Kamen Raider was labeled as a "Hero Drama", much like J-Dramas but with superheroes. But then came Kamen Rider Kabuto, it had a good start, then it just got weird towards the end. And then Den-O came and shot everything to hell and Rider hasn't been the same since.
The show became more kid friendly, some of the shows like Kiva, Double, and Fourze are cool. But the show has this habit of having Riders who don't "ride" anything, pointless weapons you only see once or twice out of the whole series. It's became a shameless plug to sale toys. I won't lie, that's come creative stuff they come up with but a lot of it has no meaning. Just would like to hear every ones thoughts on the subject.

Kamen Rider series have always been "kid friendly". They have always been aimed at kids of different ages. This is true of the past and now. Can you show me where these series were labeled Hero Drama officially? I am not a huge fan of Den-O, but IMO, it's hardly the train wreck(pun intended) people make it out to be.
We all know these are 24minute toy commercials. The best thing you can do is just enjoy the shows for what they are. 24 minutes of fun. |

I seen it in two places one years back and more recently in an interview with Steve Wang on Dragon Knight. I was at a panel where he talked about the evolution of Kamen Rider and the things that bother him watching it as a kid.
Yeah Rider is a kid show but it's more fun now than it was 10 years ago. Not complaining Fourze is cool w/ all it's silly gimmicks but is it necessary?

Love the modern stuff or don't. It doesn't matter, the toy sales seem to but I think there are still a lot of people working on Rider that love it. That love is what brought us the craziness of the Den-O OOO All Riders movie. I really enjoyed that movie because it felt like it took very seriously Ichigo and Nigo. It gave them the respect they deserve and it even made Shcoker the huge threat that it is. We are living in a post Decade world to be sure and Kamen Rider will never be what it was 40 years ago for good or bad. I think their should be more emphasis on the Rider aspect (see Kuuga's fight with the eye-gouger) but there doesn't need to be. Kamen Riider has evolved and still as the series change they offer something new, but I think the original spirit is there and we will always find new things to enjoy even in shows with time-trains, girly-men and food droids

Fast Forward to 2010, and we are given Gaia Memories and customers LOVE IT. The modular approach for the toys have opened more opportunities to make money (it is the same reason why Go-onger did so well thanks to the engine soul gimmick in terms of sales making double the amount of Gekiranger's sales) OOO medals further steps up this approach offering customers more than 100 variations of the Combos, and Fourze continues this trend with 40 + astro switches. While I agree the older series weren't as Kid friendly as the newer series, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Shows like Kuuga, Agito(which was pretty damn dark), Ryuki (just as morbid but it had a good few-lighthearted episodes) and 555 (too damned Byzantine for its own good) did invoke a lot of afterthought but hey, I've always believed that if you can tell a great story without grim and grit, you're doing a good job. And truth be told, we needed that change in tone. I mean Den-O was probably a drastic change but I think the producers/writers have learned to balance things out. W is a prime example of a show that balances out an excellent storyline with drama and comedy. OOO felt like it tried too hard to get all dark at the end but kind of failed in my opinion. Fourze seems to be firmly on the light-hearted track. And thats not a bad thing at all. Gentarou could be the human equivalent of Momotaros and the KRC could be the equivalent of the Den-Liner crew (without the pointless slapstick) but it works...the suit design, the characters and how the mesh well with each other...to me that's solid writing. This coming from one of the most hardcore of Ryuki fans, me! |

I'd dare say that Decade was the end of the heisei-era. W onwards is neo heisei

I feel like anyone claiming that Kabuto is when things got silly didn't watch Ryuki. I don't mean to sound snobby, but to me, some of their cringe-worthy attempts at "humor" episodes were far worse than anything that came after. I love the show to death, but whenever they tried to be funny, it hurt me in places I didn't know existed.
And really, Ryuki set the ground for a lot more of the toyetic elements of the Heisei shows. It's where we got the talking gear, the toyetic weapons, the humor and "humor". It was small, but the show and the R&M toyline laid the groundwork for what came after. Faiz is when we started getting weapons that the show itself seemed to just forget about and not really feel the need to explain (and the copious rider gear for toys), Blade didn't have it as strongly as Ryuki or Faiz, but when Hibiki was officially being developed as a Rider show, it kicked the same toyetic elements into high gear, that followed through in Kabuto. It's not really like it started at any one point, it's been slowly happening since the start. Kuuga and Agito are really the only ones mostly free of toyetic elements, and even then, I don't think that's the case. The "kid's show" element was there in the third year of the Heisei era. Even before Decade, 7 out of 9 of the shows went for toyetic features. |

Well, agree to disagree.
Ryuki wasn't as dark as Agito. Fact. But Kabuto was nowhere as heavy in terms of characterization or plot as Ryuki. Both had multiple Riders, but Ryuki's cast were far more interesting even if they were one-off characters like KR Gai. Merchandising wise, yes, Ryuki blew all other Rider series prior to the Decade-W-OOO collectibles out of the water. For example the Advent Cards that you needed to buy OTHER merchandise like R&M toys, Visors and even a Christmas Cake to collect. It was aggressive marketing by Bandai which I think paid off. And to their credit, I think the Ryuki era of Roleplay toys were pretty solid. |
