Flanderization, named after the Simpsons character Ned Flanders, is the tendency for character traits to become more and more exaggerated over time. Initially normal characters with a minor trait grow to be defined by that trait.
I know this doesn't since they're different characters but at the end of the day, I go with red Rangers because I feel each Sentai shows, they Flanderization all Red Rangers by making them screaming a lot and more hot-blooded character. It's like the writers go to lazy route by making red rangers dumber and have them scream a lot. Is there's a character from Sentai or Rider that suffered Flanderization by exaggerating their trait and end up becoming their only trait? |

Sentai does it a lot with these. There are some on the Riders too but I'm having trouble thinking of any since I'm trying to shoot myself.

Here’s what the actual TVTropes website has to say on the matter
[ Quote:
] Kamen Rider Fourze's Yuki was initially a bubbly, hyper, yet smart and thoughtful girl whose grades were almost as good as Kengo's and could impress Chairman Gamou (a former astronaut) with her knowledge of space. This is exaggerated through the series until she becomes an increasingly loud, screechy, childish nuisance who literally believes in imaginary "rocket gods". At peak Flanderization in the Aquarius two-parter, plenty of viewers had gotten so sick of Yuki that they wanted her kicked out of the Kamen Rider Club and replaced by the Monster of the Week, who likewise despises Yuki for treating space exploration like a joke. She gets a bit better in the Gemini two-parter, where Yuki almost gets replaced by an Evil Twin, with even her own friends mistrusting her, but for many fans the damage had already been done.
It happens to Gentaro in the movies. During the show, his goal is to befriend everyone at school. This trait is taken Up to Eleven in the movies where he's befriended sentient space goo and a giant, sentient space station. Likewise, while Gentaro has a fair number of Catch Phrasesnote "UCHUU KITAAAA~!", "Kamen Rider Fourze! Let's do this man-to-man!" and "I'm the man who will befriend everyone, Gentaro Kisaragi!", he was still a well-rounded character. But any time Fourze re-appears in crossover movies and such (especially after Souta Fukushi moved on to other projects), his dialog is 99% those three Catch Phrases repeated endlessly (or variations thereof), and Toei seemingly casts Fake Shemps based off their ability to shout "KITAAAA~!" as loudly as possible rather than actually sounding like Fukushi. Yeah, I'd say Fourze underwent a large amount of flanderization.
I didn't do a full rewatch like Switch, but I did revisit some of the earlier episodes and I had noticed Yuki wasn't anywhere near as annoying as I remembered, so I'm thinking she gets dialed up by a lot as it goes on. While I'm still somewhat curious, I'm also quite glad I dropped Hibiki at 29. If even the cast agrees that the behind the scenes meddling ruined things, then I'm fine with the first half~

Honestly, that explanation makes so much sense I'm willing to accept it

I'd... contest a few things about that TV Tropes post.
Like, for one thing, where's the "plenty of viewers had gotten sick of her and wanted her replaced" thing come from? Because unless it's based on an actual amount of Japanese viewers protesting that, it's hard to not read it as the writer projecting their own opinions beyond themselves. The second point about Gentarou... is not flanderisation? He-- he just befriends beings outside the school. Extraordinary beings that stretch disbelief beyond just 'classmates', sure, but he's not exactly flanderised or portrayed weirdly here. If anything some of his best scenes involve befriending Nadeshiko and the Space Station, and it's a testament to his character! Kamen Rider, ESPECIALLY Fourze; delves into the fantastic and the incredible on a daily basis, and dialing things up to 11 is just something the movies always do. If Gentarou befriending a space station is done well, then hell yeah, he's befriending a space station! As for the third... it's not entirely wrong, but that's the Super Hero Taisen movies. Like. Just about no-one was portrayed great there. Y'all wanna talk about what the heck the Showa Riders are thinking in KRT? At least Gentarou in that movie was barely a cameo! And beyond them, it's inaccurate. Wizard x Fourze, while I didn't particularly enjoy; actually has some of its strengths lie in the Fourze section for showing how every character including Gentarou has developed and grown up. Once again some of Gentarou's best scenes are in that movie and there's a fair amount of nuance to him as a teacher. As for his other major crossover appearance? Heisei Generations Final does similarly incredible work! I just don't understand where a lot of this is coming from, I guess. When Gentarou has a major role he's written to act like he always has and doesn't lose any of his nuance. I can understand arguments for Yuki, but certainly not Gentarou himself.

Honestly Yuki is the primary reason I don't like Fourze as much. She was good in the first few episodes, and then poof! Most annoying heroine ever.

To be fair on Yuki.
The show's two primary writers handled Yuki's personality in different ways. Kazuki Nakashima (Head-Writer) tended to focus on her role as The Heart of the KRC, while Riku Sanjo (Secondary-Writer) focused on the "ditzy space otaku" aspect, which gave us the infamous Aquarius two-parter. So any Riku Sanjo-written episodes that feature her tend to flanderization her. |
