I know a lot of us use other sites to watch Toku Drama and I was wondering, is this illegal? Are we giving money to the uploaders who do it or not?

Of course it's illegal, technically. And you're giving money to them via ads, if you're not blocking them.
However, I doubt anyone behind Japanese Tokusatsu sees a minority of adults in the west who watch fansubs of their stuff as a risk to their business. These shows exist to sell toys; the toys sell well, so they won't go after people who give it more exposure. The way I see it, as long as there isn’t a legal way to get your hands on a show (via a legitimate streaming service like Crunchyroll or home video releases like Shout's Sentai DVD's) then its okay to download / stream the subtitled episodes. Even though this isn’t how it works, I like to believe that me paying for some of the role-play toys I like or the Figuarts I collect is giving them the money they deserve. Because if we're realistic, the subbing groups give them extra business, their subs open up Japanese exclusive shows to an audience that was never meant to be reached yet also likes to buy their stuff. They are actually giving Toei, Bandai etc. money; they aren't loosing anything just because we can watch the show for free. |

How can I block ads to prevent giving them money? How do ads give them cash? Whenever one pops up, I close it quickly. Does that give them money? 2. Only technically I think, you aren’t going to get in trouble because you aren’t the one hosting it, however. 3. It’s called ad block. Get it. I recommend either uBlock Origin or Ad Nauseum. Particularly together. |

However, there has to be someone who wants you in trouble for it. And as I said, I doubt that Toei or the copyright holders really want to pursue the handful of people in Germany who stream Kamen Rider shows. It might be entirely different with big Hollywood movies and shows, but I don’t stream those illegally so I don’t really care. On a moral level or in terms of the law? It's debatable in both cases but the latter definitely depends on where you live I guess. Quote:
Certain browser add-ons / extensions like adblock block every pop-up ad or video ads, that way they aren't loaded / displayed and the streaming sites won’t get paid. However, you should try and use stuff like ad-block carefully, because certain sites need the payment from advertisements to survive. If you have ad-block active on YouTube for example the person creating the videos you watch won’t get paid for their work because you don’t watch the advertisements before the video starts. So if you use ad-block make sure to only use it on sites that use advertisement in a harmful way or want to make money off of stuff that doesn't belong to them. |

That article is nearly 4 years old. The European Court of Justice has ruled guilty in a case of streaming last year.
I don’t really know how it works, I just try to stay away from streaming big movies and popular shows on obviously fishy sites. You're watching something without paying for it, on a website that hasn't paid for the license. Quote:
I use UBlock Origin with my Firefox and I can still visit it. |

I don't, I download them via torrent. Which is just as "illegal", if not more, since I share the file while downloading it and because I have the file on my hard drive.
But I don’t think anyone ever got into trouble for streaming/downloading a Kamen Rider-show. Toei doesn’t seem to care much about that. Quote:
Can't help you with that but try looking up the problem yourself, Google can help quite a bit if you know how to use it. |
