The surroundings are black, the colors of red and orange flashing every so often. The smell of burning flesh filling the inhabitants of this realm. This is the realm of the dead, and this is Hell.
Above Hell however, it is nothing but pure white. This is purgatory, a land of nothingness. A land where the dead wait to move on to their eternity. In Purgatory, Yan, the judge of the dead sits in a throne. With his hand pressed against his chin, his eyes focused up towards the heavens, he ponders his role in the scheme of things. He thinks to himself how he never meets a decent person anymore. “Day after day, it’s nothing but scum.” He mumbles to himself. Being the judge of the dead means that Yan must decide who goes on to a blissful afterlife, or one of pain and sorrow. In recent years, Yana has been greeted by largely those who deserve to go to Hell. “Sure, there’s the occasional good soul, but everybody else is a piece of garbage that should’ve been dead a long time ago.” The judge has also taken notice to how many sinners he receives now, and how every day, they decrease in age. What use to be a place filled with hellish adults is now filled with infernal children. “It sickens me to my core.” Yan says to himself. He leans back in his throne, releasing a sigh. “I wish I could go up to the human world and just take care of all of these vermin myself. I’m already their judge; why not act as their executioner?” He scuffles to himself at his idea, he knowing very well that he cannot do this. It’s an entertaining thought, and Yan wishes he could do this. But he has no means to do so, meaning that he is stuck playing judge for all of the living world’s inhabitants, including their turds. As he sighs again, a body suddenly falls down to his feet. This body is small, perhaps that of a child. Yan looks down at this little human. This creature being a child for sure, but one that is obviously in pain. His clothing bloodied and ripper, what little skin he can see cut and bruised. The child then speaks out, albeit very horsely. Yan makes out his cry though. “H..h...help me…” At that moment, Yan’s face turns from one of boredom, into one of delight. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Opening theme and credits ----------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 - In Session “I’m gonna be late mom, make it quick!” the boy, Yamahiko shouts back. “Remember to pick up your sister after school! I’m working late tonight and won’t be able to do so.” “Gotcha mom!” Yamahiko says before bolting out of the house. Yamahiko Suzuki is one of the many teenagers in Shinjuku whose life has become affected by the rapid rise of crime. Even since it got crazy, he’s had to act as his house’s guardian of sorts since his father died years ago in a robbery. He isn’t the best man of the house, but he certainly tries his best. With both his mother and sister watching his back, he feels as if he can do anything. The teacher of Tsukamoto High Class G is taking roll call. As the bell rings, he gets to Yamahiko’s name. “Suzuki Yamahiko?” He asks, waiting to get an answer. The teacher gets no answer. He repeats the name again. The second time, causing about two people to look where Yamahiko’s desk is. One of them, a girl, speaks up about this apparent tardiness. “Is Yamahiko feeling well?” She asks the boy beside her. “Not sure, he sounded alright last night on the phone.” The boy replies. The teacher repeats Yamahiko’s name for a third time. The teacher sighs some and goes to mark him absent. Before he can do so, Yamahiko bursts into the room, out of breath and sweaty. “I’m here Mr. Hakase!” Yamahiko blurts out as he tries to catch his breath. “Hmm. Oh, there you are Suzuki. You’re lucky; I was just about to mark you absent. Take your seat.” Mr. Hakase tells his young student. Yamahiko smiles some, nodding his head in understanding. He makes his way to his desk and plops down. When he looks over at his friends, the girl and boy who were looking for him, he sees them giving him looks that bring about the phrase “Really?” He simply shrugs them off, laughing a bit. After the school day is done, Yamahiko and his companions walk away from the building, heading towards a convenient store. As they walk, they make conversation about a variety of subjects. The girl, whose name is Shina talks about how her family is squabbling over how her cousin is staying with them, and has yet to get a job to pay her share of rent. The boy, Kenji Kitano, mentions how he’s going off on a trip to the country with his grandfather soon. As they leave the convenience store, Yamahiko stops in his tracks, two sticks of pokcy in his mouth. “Dammit!” “What is it Yamahiko?” Shina asks, slightly concerned from his swearing. “I forgot, I have to go pick up Mayu.” He explains. He then turns his back to his friends, and starts running off, he shouting back at them, waving a hand. “Cya later!” “Bye.” Kenji replies. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Start of commercial break ----------------------------------------------------------------- End of commercial break ----------------------------------------------------------------- When Yamahiko finally gets to his sister’s elementary school, the sun is slowly starting to set. When he gets there, his sister and her teacher are standing out front waiting for him. “Sorry I’m late, I lost track of the time.” “Just wait till I tell mom!” His sister says to him, she placing her hands against her hips as she does so, causing both Yamahiko and the teacher to laugh. “Don’t be so mad Mayu, I’m sure he didn’t mean to run late.” “Hmph.” “I’m really sorry Mayu. Why don’t I take you out for ice cream to apologize?” Yamahiko suggests, kneeling down in front of her. “I don’t know…” Mayu says, turning her head away from her brother. “You can get double scoops.” Mayu then runs off, grabbing her bag from her teacher. She then turns her head back some, shouting out to her brother. “Come on brother! Let’s get there before dinner!” The teacher and Yamahiko laugh softly, they watching Mayu as she runs around the schoolyard waiting for her brother. Yamahiko then turns to the teacher. He gives the young woman a small bow before heading off quickly as Mayu starts to leave him behind. As the siblings run off, the teacher waves at them in goodbye. The sun is now almost fully set, with hints of night already starting to become more frequent. Yamahiko and Mayu walk side by side, she holding his hand softly. Every so often on their walk back home, Yamahiko looks down at his sister and smiles down at her warmly, even though she isn’t smiling or looking back. His sister has been the best thing in his life so far. She may annoy his skin off, but he loves her with all he can muster. Mayu then looks up at her brother as she catches him smiling down at her. She returns the smile, and removes her hand from his to wrap both arms around his waist, hugging him tightly. “I love you brother.” “I love you too.” The older child responds. They continue to walk for some time, but out of the blue, Yamahiko finds himself on the ground face first, his left cheek blazing in pain, he feeling something cold dripping off of it. As he tries to get up, he feels something slam down against his back, making him scream out in pain. He wiggles his head some, his hair matted to his face. With his slight vision gain, he sees a gang of men, around the age of 18 to mid twenties standing around him. Two of these men having hold of Mayu, and trying to force her into a car, she screaming for her brother, and for help. “MAYU!” Yamahiko shouts out. Yamahiko gathers the strength to get himself up to his feet, pushing the foot off of him. Once on his feet, his eyes become narrow and anger filled, as well as filled with blood lust. He rushes towards Mayu, but he is caught with a kick that sends him back onto his ass. He gets up again, he letting out a scream before rushing towards the group of men blocking his way. “GET OUT OF MY WAY YOU BASTARDS!” He throws a punch against one of the men, he then switching quickly to another one, throwing another punch. The men then swarm around him in a circle, and then begin to attack him viciously one after another. Yamahiko fights back valiantly, but he is at a disadvantage, and is taking more abuse then his attackers. He manages to take a few down with knee shots to the groin, and a few punches to the face and throat. Things however turn against him as he suddenly hears a clicking noise. Before he can react, he feels a sharp pain suddenly in his back. The amount of pain he feels is enough to send him down to his knees. When he touches at his back to try and see what caused this pain, he discovers that he has been stabbed, a box cutter lodged with his lower back. As he looks at the blood on his hand, one of the bigger men steps up to him. Yamahiko looks up at this man’s face, but is only able to see his foot as the man raises it up. He lets out one left breath before the man brings his foot down against his face. The impact immediately crushing in some of his teeth and facial features, as well as sending his face down hard against the ground. The men then take Yamahiko’s wallet and walk away, the card that houses Mayu speeding away, leaving Yamahiko in a pool of blood, his body beaten and broken. He looks up some, trying to find his sister, he even managing to speak her name, if hoarse and nothing more than a whisper. He tries to bring his head up, but after a few seconds it drops down against the ground, Yamahiko going motionless. After what felt like an eternity, Yamahiko is able to open his eyes. Once open, all that he is able to take in is nothing but white. That, and a person’s feet, they big and red. After gaining his vision back, he now feels his strength returning, giving him enough to slowly work his way up to his knees. Confused, he looks down at his hands, the blood he once saw no longer there. He can no longer feel any pain as well, and when he searches his back, he feels the knife no longer there. Yamahiko then laughs a little. He then looks around, he not able to see any of his familiar surroundings. He was certain that the horrible incident was a dream, but if he’s awake now, he would be in bed, not this strange place. He then looks up at the person’s feet that he saw. This person is not any of the men who he had seen previously, but a larger one. His skin red and his clothing white robes. When he sees this person’s face, he is taken back some, as this thing’s face resembles that of the Gods he has seen in his mythology books. With his voice now returned to him, Yamahiko speaks up. “W who are you?” The giant man then scuffles a little before speaking. “Heh, so I suppose humans aren’t even kind enough to learn my name before they meet me. My name is Yan, judge of the dead.” Yamahiko’s eyes then become bigger and slightly buggy. “Judge of the d d dead? Wait, does that mean…” “Indeed young man. It appears you have died.” Yan answers in response. Yamahiko suddenly finds himself crying, now knowing that this is not a dream, but reality. He has died, and was unable to save his sister. “No…I can’t be dead…that means…Mayu…” Yamahiko then cries out in agony before he finishes his sentence, the memory of what happened too much for him to bear. He throws himself back first against the floor, rolling back and worth and flipping about from the pain of his inability to protect his sibling. Yan looks down at this boy that has seemed to have gone insane before him. He is not sure why the boy has become hysterical, but he is intrigued by it. Yan steps towards the boy, and places his index finger against his forehead. Yamahiko, shocked by this does not react. Yan after a moment pulls his hand away and looks down at Yamahiko. “So, Suzuki Yamahiko, you were killed for your money, and had your sister taken away from you.” Yamahiko starts to cry again, and brings his knees into his chest, holding them close. After a moments silence, his eyes become wide again as he takes in what this strange red man has said. “Boy, what would you say if I could bring you back to life…and give you revenge against those who have wronged you?” ...To be continued
