i think alot of fans that dont like saber didnt expect saber to be this light hearted, which is something that kamen rider has never done because of story book theme series which is light hearted since it's aimed towards little kids and probably covid has alot do with it too.
i enjoy it because it's different, i guess i like light hearted series, i guess it's the child in me. |

Oh, so it was Takeshi. Reminds me of that time when Yuka's sister from Faiz was also in Abaranger as a guest role/Abare Blue's patient.

Saber is definitely proving to be a show that's subtly "off" in a lot of odd ways, but I'm also still loving what I'm seeing. Fukuda is being a flake as is usual, I guess, so despite it only being episode 3, this one was written by Nobuhiro Mouri, who of course worked with Fukuda on Ghost, and more recently wrote what a lot of people will argue are the better stretches of Zi-O. My personal image of him is as a reliably competent guest writer who also occasionally knocks a story out of the park. This one definitely felt firmly on the "reliably competent" side of things.
Above all else, this is clearly the big Buster introduction episode, and it nailed that much for sure. Ryou is just *big* in every sense of the word, and has a great sense of presence that also owes a lot to Shoujirou Nakazawa's direction and the talents of both of his actors. The script is maybe doing the minority of the work here, if I'm being honest. There are some awkward notes, like having a cold open before Buster's first scene, which is clearly meant to be an in medias res cold open, hence Touma and Rintarou just being on an adventure without explanation. There's nothing that I felt was a huge deal breaker though, and I certainly appreciated the relatively subdued pacing. That part is likely down to being part one of a larger story, which is probably a smart move for a show this tight on space. I don't think I'd mind seeing the usual two-parter formula being applied to this series going forward. And since the story is mostly setup, it's hard to say too much about, but I did think it was interesting setup, for what it's worth, working in both things for part two and some bigger questions for the show as a whole. In the moment, the most fun in the episode was definitely from Touma's inexplicably wholesome interactions with his fellow Riders, like there was a memo about this franchise nobody but Buster and Calibur got. Saber and Blades especially have this real harmonious chemistry that doesn't help the Sentai comparisons, but is making for some fun fight scenes that seem to be stressing the creative fantastical powers more than raw and exhilarating choreography. Which isn't to say that they're totally forgoing the latter, either; it's just that the above average swordplay gets a little lost in the chaos sometimes. Ordinarily, I'd be the one mourning the days of more restrained Rider shows, but for Saber, I'm really embracing the whole "beautiful mess" aspect of it, because it seems like the show itself is too, and it's definitely making for a good time so far.

Mei is great eye candy though, if you take everything else apart.
As for her acting, chances are those are the directions she was given, seeing that the director kept these acts. |

Wow, I know the whole "bringing back past monsters" bit has been a recurring thing in Kamen Rider, but normally they seem to save it for the later arcs, when the focus shifts from MotWs to major villains. To see it already in episode 3 is... actually kind of interesting!? I like how they actually give a reason for it instead of just having past monsters show up with no explanation. I expect it means we'll see fewer unique MotWs, but that frees up more screen time to develop major characters, which is worth it IMO.
And I like how destroying the monster didn't fix the problem. In toku, you kinda get used to the idea that when a monster does something weird with its powers like trapping people in another world, defeating the monster will reverse its powers and put things back the way they should be, so having that subverted makes me feel like the situation is more dangerous. The hints of backstory we got were interesting too. Calibur's design always makes me think of lightning, so my guess is that he was the previous Espada and Kento's teacher.

Saber continues to be utterly underwhelming. Characters are annoying, the action is nothing special, and I'm just left bored for most of the episode.
I can't get heated and upset, I'm just...Bored. Here's to hoping something interesting happens.

Agree to disagree. I did hate her at the beginning, but she grew on me, especially on later rewatches. Akiko may be a lot of things, but her actress never overacted to this extent. Helps that Akiko's (portrayed as being) younger too (and therefore less creepy) and has the capacity to portray a wide(er) range of emotions beyond hyper.

Some people tend to forget that light hearted does not necessarily mean boring, and like what IndigoArms said, it could be intentionally light-hearted. And besides, this is a kids show. |

In my opinion; saber is the same as wizard: a bastardized take on something I greatly enjoy that fills me with nothing but utter disapointment. Looks like I will be sitting this season out unless it gets dark and serious quickly
