So MatrixBeast told me to make this its own thread just like his Decade rant so I will.
This is going to be long, so sit down, have a drink and read my long rant about the endgame and ending of Ryuki. Spoilerfest below. And no, you knew it was going to be my rant about the end by the title, so no spoiler tags for Ryuki here. So this is from episode 39 of Ryuki until the end. Positives: Before I start with my rant, let me start off with the positives about the end. I liked that Shirou let Alternative Zero join the Rider war if he wanted to but also gave him an incentive not to. That addressed a lot of my issues about Shirou and Alternative. I would also like to give props to Shinji for developing into someone who's not a dumbass and is willing to accept death and sacrifice (both his and others'). Especially when Shinji found out about Kiotawa's illness, one of the best things about Ryuki was how it played up what people's knowledge and how they found out, this was a great addition to that. I also liked the end of the ORE journal subplot, where the Editor in Chief and Reiko gave their moral to support to Shinji once they found out he was and Rider and he confessed everything. Asakura's death was a fitting end, the police shooting him was the most extreme option for serial killers in jail, so it made sense. Negatives pre-Episode 47 Firstly, my issues with Tiger. My new biggest problem with Ryuki before the end became Kamen Rider Tiger killing off characters that could have their interesting subplots evolve and grow more then what they were given. Alternative Zero's subplot and backstory could have evolved beyond, "I have a family." Having a cute kid isn't enough complete your development, buddy. It would have been interesting to see how the family deals with learning that the father is a rider, and a child needed to understand the dangers and consequences of his Father becoming a Rider and how he deals with his Dad's death. Could have made Alternative Zero's death all the more impactful. But no, the most we see of his family dealing with the Rider War was indirectly when Shiro sent a Mirror monster after them and Shinji coming to the rescue. Kamen Rider Imperer's backstory/subplot could have went deeper into the true meaning of money in the Rider war, especially this late in, and whether or not it money was important to Kitoka since he was so close to his death anyways. Since Imperer is so rich, this subplot could have been an opening to seeing another man made Rider so Imperer can have his own team, and get revenge on people who rejected him. But nope, Tiger fucking killed indirectly kills him before and any sort of promise shows. Imperer never really affects anything. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Tiger is a bad character, I'm just pissed the writers used him as an excuse to cut off underdeveloped subplots and lower the number of Riders so it becomes more manageable at the end. Tiger is unstable, and I like that, makes him different than consistently angry Asakura so we don't have another situation of where a the new Rider is a bigger asshole/dick/sleazebag/ then the last one. However, I was rooting for anyone that was beating the shit out of Tiger so I do hate him though. Rant: The ending. Fair warning, this segment is going to have a lot of comparisons to the TV series Fringe and spoilers for that series, swear words and anger. So apparently, Kamen Rider Ryuki pulls a Peter Bishop and the Yui we know is actually from the Mirror world. However, she is going to die on her 20th birthday unless Shirou finds a new life for her by then, hence the Rider war. And now at the end, we have a ton these dragonfly looking monsters attacking people. Firstly, Shirou is fucking crazy for doing this. Does he not realize that the Rider war has directly (Riders) and indirectly (Mirror Monster attacks) killed so many people that are so important to others? I know he loves his sister but really? Not counting civilian deaths, there has been 15 lives sacrificed for Yui. He's taken them away from people who need them in thier lives just because he wants to keep his dead sister alive. Its pretty damn ironic how he is causing Artifical death in order to sustain... an artificial life, had he let her die like in the reset, Yui's natural death would have saved many lives and let those around them and express love, which is what Shirou is trying to do for Yui. This setup is pretty damn similar to the backstory behind Peter Bishop from Fringe. Walter Bishop, Peter's dad, had his son die at a young age due to an uncureable diease. He has a window into the alternate universe so he sees the Alternate him working on a formula to cure his son of the same diease. Due to some other plot point that I won't won't explain here, Walternate misses the temporary positive reaction in the medicine to save his son. So Walter modifies the medicine and builds a bridge to the alternate universe to save Walternate's son by bringing Alternate Peter back to his universe to cure him, and kept him as his son. Due to Walternate becoming the Secretary of defense of the U.S. in the Alternate universe and some other plot points I won't bring up here due to them not being relevant to what I'm trying to say about Ryuki, there is a war between the two universes, with our universe being defensive. This setup works way better in Fringe due to a few things. 1 The war between universes not being an intentional consequence of Alternate Peter becoming Walter's son. Its tragic when people die in both universes because Walter opened the portal in order to save someone. 2 Peter's life force isn't tied to the fate of those killed by Walternate. 3 HE'S A CHARACTER THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE ACTION OF THE FUCKING PLOT AND HAS A PERSONALITY. Seriously, I would be fine with Shirou having this Rider war happen due to his love for his sister and hell, I be fine Tiger killing off cool characters if Yui contributed to the plot and had a personality. Yui has got to be the most useless character with no personality that is the most central to a plot I have ever seen in any sort of fiction. She helped Ren track down mirror monsters and told Shiji what to do in the first few episodes and then..... her grandmother shows up and Yui is in the shop cleaning dishes, washing the floor and serving the customers. The most personality of her I can find is... annoying. She is reduced to a useless character and becomes a damsel in distress by the time Alternative shows up. Yui pretty much aslo becomes an Onnichan spouting machine. Its annoying when I have to hear for the billionth time "Onnichannnn..." WE GET IT, YOU WORRY FOR YOUR BROTHER. Listen up Ryuki writers, I get that Shirou is her brother and would do anything for her in order to have her back, but I need a reason to love her too. I can't invest in a character if they don't have a personality. I can invest in Shinji because I can relate to him and he has growth, I can invest in Ren because his backstory of becoming Knight is sad and changes him, I can invest in Kitoawa because he has both good and bad traits to him. Hell I can relate to Asakura because I can get really angry sometimes and lash out. I've said this in a previous post but I'll elaborate. Hina-chan from Kamen Rider OOO, while she doesn't do as much as Ankh or Eiji, has a personality of positivity but concern when necessary for herself and others and it bounces off of Eiji really well. She also isn't completely fucking useless, as she helps support Eiji emotionally on down days, is very concerned about her brother's fate, puts a lot of pressure on Ankh and stops Eiji from killing everybody near him when he first goes into Putotyra form. And she changes. Yui is fucking useless, has no personalitiy and is stagnant. She starts to have an interesting dilemma when she was going to kill herself in episode 47, about the choice of either her brother's love or to save others but a mirror monster and a locked closet changed that. And what the fuck was the point of your supposed "love" Shirou if you were willing on the drop of a hat go back in time and let Yui die so the Rider war won't happen? I mean I'm happy that countless characters didn't die for the worst character in the show but seriously what was the point? The final fight with Odin and Knight survive was kinda lame but it was fine for what it needed to be. Verdict on Ryuki: I like it. Not the best I've seen so far but it gets past its wasted potential and bad ending and becomes its own. Usually bad endings destroy a series but not this one, especially with the tons of different alternate endings from the Movie to 13 riders to the two SIC hero saga stories. The premise is cool, it has great characters, interesting subplots, storylines, and dramatic moments plus, its different from other rider shows. Granted, its not THAT different, there are still monsters of the week, some sense of "evil" sides and uses a toy selling gimmick. Losts of interesting philosophical elements sprinkled throughout, such as an even playing field in the mirror world but uneven outside of that arena, what is "good" and "evil" and honor. B- or B depending on my mood. Last edited by Powerman293; 09-19-2013 at 07:19 AM.. |

I think that was the point of Shirou's decision.
He was blinded by fanaticism. All he saw was his sister, so he literally did everything for her, including let the entire Rider War occur. I think his turn was a "I can see the light" situation, where he realized that, despite his good intentions, he was in the wrong, thus reversing the Rider War. Now, I may be entirely wrong, but that's just how I felt it.
