Anyone watch this series yet? I just finished it and FWIW, even though it looks (and probably is) cheap budgeted, it was a beautiful series IMO. What are your guys' thoughts on it?

I watched a decent portion of it.
At first glance I thought the character concepts for Ryukendo and Ryugunoh were mere ripoffs of Kamen Rider Blade and Garren, along with Jack Moon feeling like a Kamen Rider Knight Ripoff. But then after watching a few eps I began to like it. The use of keys was cool, God Ryukendo looks awesome to this day, and I regret not getting the microman figures when I had the chance. The idea of protecting a certain town/area felt more down to Earth as well. Hope they release a revoltech or figma of this guy that is if Takaratomy allows them to do so.

Hey, Den-O didn't think my DEFENSE THREAD! was different enough from this, going on two year old, thread so I'm reposting what was put in that shackled and gagged thread here - sorry to the OP for the hijack.
MarsHottentot: Watching Madan Senki Ryukendo (unfortunately, the first episode seems to be unattainable) and really liking it. So, knowing some here really don't, I'm pitching a defense thread so maybe I can reach those who possibly would! Ryukendo is clearly a neo-Heisei style Kamen Rider riff - I'd say it's more of a satire than a straight rip-off. Yes, it's low budget and wantonly goofy - but the humor isn't as "hey kids!" silly (like, say, ToQger) as it is patently absurd. I mean, it's armored henshin heroes protecting a small "city" filled with weirdos from an old bug wizard ("Poisonous Insect Professor Dr. Worm"!!) who chews scenery like it's 1971. He's gathering the townsfolk's "Minus Energy" (bummer feels) for a cool "dark" villain named "Lunar Eclipse Mask Jack Moon". Their cannon fodder ("Familiars" - haha! Occult AND satirical) seem to be a bit more self-aware than most Toku targets, which leads to some great comic moments. The satire is pretty spot on, answering some questions about hero battles you might not have even considered: During one fight, the flaming jetsam sent skyward from Ryukendo and an "evolved" Familiar's blazing swords - a common enough occurrence in these kind of shows - rain down on Akebono City, destroying numerous homes to absolutely no consequence (some citizens are shown passing smoldering rubble discussing what to have for dinner! "Fried Meat! YAY!"). The town look at their demon infestation as something unique, rather than something all that terrible. To Akebono's populace, demons are a long time issue; people have just grown to deal with it, like heavy traffic or some shit! Like I said, this show is absurd - but in a cool way. It's not really intense. It's not too dramatic, as far as I've seen, though it's got enough to keep you hooked. But it is weird and funny and the whole key wheel gimmick / driver belt stand-in is pretty sweet. So the basic concept is a mix between magic and technology, so Kenji has a magical, talking tech sword that he jams special power keys into (kept in a spinning wheel holster on the side of his belt), imbuing himself and the sword with additional abilities, armor upgrades and a transforming "spirit animal" mech / motor-trike (Brave Leon!). He gets new keys with each demon he defeats (most of the time), which are then decoded by special police org SHOT (Shoot Hell Obduracy Troopers - wha?) for use against Jack Moon's Jamanga forces. The secondary rider - oops, I mean "Madan Warrior", is the older, cooler guy (both cliches rolled into one, well played MSR!) who has a talking magic tech gun. Unlike the usual way of things, he typically needs to be bailed out, even if he is obviously cooler. There are MWs with different fight techniques, but I haven't got that far yet. Production-wise, it's very mid-00's; shot on DV with a lot of low-budget CGI - comparable in many ways to Kamen Rider Ryuuki (also released in '06 - EDIT: '02!), though the costuming isn't nearly as good (not terrible, mind you) and the color tone palate isn't as dark. C'mon! How can you not love a show whose outro is the main characters playing free-shot football / soccer against the cannon fodder, who all nervously protect their junk? OH! And the OT track is like a hair metal band at war with a psychedelic noise guitarist. Awesome (lyrics are terrible). This show is... GOOD. macblo: I love Ryukendo as well. It was a really fun show filled with some pretty funny characters. It didn't really have to much of a plot, though there were a few episodes dedicated to the lore of the world and the backstory of the characters, it didn't need one at all to be enjoyable. MarsHottentot: I definitely think being a Kamen Rider fan actually makes Ryukendo more fun as it's so obviously goofing on that show. Of course, if your not, this probably comes off as a 'worse' version of something you already can't stand, so... Has anyone seen the related Tomica Hero Rescue Fire shows (the TV-Nihon links are long dead)? Opinions? The one with the numbered armor looks potentially interesting. Yes Youtube - for boring reasons I won't pass on, I'm using a terribly old computer that can't do much at the same time, so playing videos is a pain. Looks like Hiroshi Fujioka (Hongo / Rider 1) is in it - didn't expect that! GreenPsychoRanger: Nice to see that I'm not the only one that's found this series. From I'm to gather you can watch the entire first season (or series if there's only one seaon) on kissasian.com. I know this because that's where I watched the first episode. MarsHottentot The ancient sendspace links seem to all be good over at TV-Nihon forums - except the first episode. I'm about halfway through and am going to mirror them all when finished in my Mediafire Pro account which I've had for years, so those should stay live for a good long time, too. I've never got kissasian DL's to work for me! Message me if I'm missing something! Den-O Yo, fool! Ain't you know how to search? There's already a crusty old thread for this shit, you dummy! I'ma lock this bitch down.* *(I'm paraphrasing here) |

Second OP was alright but yeah the first one is more iconic. Plus it was performed by the man who gave us the first One Piece OP.

I haven't seen any old toku in awhile, so might as well give it a shot.
Epiosde 1 So Kenzaki.... I mean Narukami walks into a city filled with useless police. The generic henchmen remind me of the henchmen from Abaranger. And holy crap there were a lot of them. And Garren... er... I mean the red guy working for Board... er.. Shot beat all these guys. I am try to remember if any rider's been this badass with how he uses his gun. Jack Moon looks badass despite looking like a monster version of Kamen Rider Knight. But he still looks awesome, and now I want to watch just to see how he fights. I am less a fan of the hero suit designs though. It feels like it's missing something. A distinguishable sort of eye or visor design would have helped, because other aspects of the designs are fine by themselves, they just need that last thing to tie everything together. And wow, a new key already? Damn, this show does not mess around. I found it to be a decent first episode. Mystery, the basic gimmick, introducing characters. Episode 2 Similar to the first episode. I like how the sort of monster was somewhat used to develop Narukami's relationship with that one girl. Plus we get the reasoning why SHOT exists, to get rid of these demons outside the boundary of law. Narukami has a bond with GekiRyuken because his grandfather was good with a sword? Okay. Fire key was pretty cool, albeit underutilized. I am not sure how to feel about the suit. That red adds to the suit but defintley clashes with the blue. I wonder if RyuGunou can use the different element keys? These first two episodes show me that this show has potiental for an interesting story hut off the bat aren't grabbing me. Since this show accidentally resembles Kamen Rider Blade, I guess it also starts off in a slump lol. Last edited by Powerman293; 10-25-2016 at 01:47 PM.. |

It definitely gets better though it's generally more about the satirical LOL than serious plot work. It's a... "Combat Comedy".
