I actually don't see the differences from Haruto and Eiji or Wataru. From your description, those two fit that rather well, too.
I've stopped "Not liking" Haruto, however, I don't see what makes him one of the greatest protagonists you hail him as.

I still don't see why people don't like him.
I mean, I can see why he feels very different from the last several guys, but I don't see why so many people find it off-putting and dull. I think he's great. It's kind of hard to easily put it into words without just listing stuff I like about him, but it mostly boils down to just really, really liking the character. He's a dedicated hero who proactively hunts the monsters, he doesn't get easily sidetracked, and he's willing to make some hard decisions when he has to (the film student and his old teacher). I like that he's confident and serious on the surface, but still can display emotions when he can't keep up the cool facade. I think he can be really funny - in a subtle way, not the broad rubber-faced overacting that is standard tokusatsu humor. Really, I like that he's basically a modern version of the Showa Riders' best qualities (minus Ichimonji and Kazami's evil laughs - we need a Rider who can bust that out again). He's not an arrogant jerk, he's not a barely competent goofball, he's not a bathing emo, he's a bonafide superhero. And he's awesome.

But no, the biggest difference between Haruto and the other two is that Eiji and Wataru's stories are very different. Both start off as kind of reluctant and not completely competent heroes. Eiji spends much of the series letting Ankh guide him in battle and Wataru sulks in the bathtub whenever he has to do anything. Their stories are more about their journey from that novice state to the moment where they are fully independent and capable badasses (or Kiva). Haruto skips that growing phase and begins the show as a fully formed hero. We don't have to see him go through the days when he had no idea how to fight or use his rings, we start the show with his powers fully in place and under control. That's not necessarily a better or worse kind of story, but taking out the neophyte phase tends to make him look stronger because we never had to see him try and figure stuff out. |

I liked Nitou over Haruto but still both of them are in my top 10 list. Sad that Nitou lost his powers to transform into Beast i hope chimera returns back to Nitou and i also hope that Koyomi dies or else i will go into despair and turn into a phantom. LOL......

I didn't like Haruto for the first half of the series but as he's been opened a bit since then I do like him. He's noble. Amongst all the post-Decade riders he seems to be more innately heroic. He's a noble character. All he wants to do is help people find hope within themselves and not despair. Part of that is the lack of extraneous circumstances to distract him, but it still counts I think.
I still think Nitou has the better character arc though. I bet Chimera comes back and he gets repowered in the finale. |

A very nice ep overall. Loved the fight scenes especially since the Wizards hand to hand was more of a Chinese style kung-fu rather than the more traditional street brawling style.
Koyomi's death was just....so foreshadowed. We all kinda knew it was coming but it was nice to see Gremlin get a little bit of revenge. As we all know, if you don't see the villain die, they didn't actually die. My only gripe with the ep was how Fueki 'died'. Gremlin just destroyed the belt, he didn't actually strike Fueki. Weird. |

Well, the belt being destroyed leading to Fueki's death could also be significant because completely draining a being of mana (Which is channeled through the belt) could kill them. So even if the first strike didn't kill him, there was a mild precedent for why he died, anyway.
