Ultraman falls into that same category of shows that Star Trek does, in my opinion. I can't quite put my finger on why, but there's just something about the way they handle their stories. But it can be VERY good.
If you want a great modern Ultraman story to check out, try and see Ultra Galaxy: Mega Monster Battle. It's available on Bluray with an english subtitled track. Then check out the sequel, Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial. You'll have to get a fansub for that one. But I just watched it last night (I'd seen Ultra Galaxy last year) and it blew me away. Without any exaggeration, I can definitely say it was one of the best Sci-Fi movies I've seen in a LONG time.

I really don't see how Ultraman can be any more campy than Kamen Rider (especially many recent entries) or Super Sentai. I'd agree with the comparison to Star Trek though. Their stories can be similarly slower with more talking than the faster paced action one might expect from a hero show. I'm not the biggest Ultraman fan myself but I've still enjoyed most of what I've seen.
I might suggest however trying Ultraman Nexus and the movie which is the precursor to it, Utraman The Next. Typically people who can't get into the traditional Ultraman shows do go for Nexus. I also second the recommendation for Ultra Galaxy Legend Mega Monster Battle and Ultraman Zero The Revenge of Belial. Both are very good movies.

I do very much enjoy Ultraman, but sometimes I just can't get into it. I can't figure out what it is. I mean, I watch it, and I like it, yeah, but I don't ENJOY watching it. And I've confused my self...

Maybe it's because I'm more of a Showa era fan, but I think the campy feeling is just part of the charm. For me though, the real allure is the giant monsters, the model buildings and landscapes, the giant hero aiding the human team and the wild change in scale between them. If you try to look at it as a straight up super hero show, I don't think you'll find the appeal.
The Star Trek comparison seems like a good fit; it's more about the overall spectacle of what is going on than whether or not the hero can defeat the nefarious bad guys. If I'm not mistaken, the Ultra series (particularly early on) took a lot of inspiration from programs like the Twilight Zone and the Outer Limits. |

I think all the Science-Fiction stuff is the big appeal, I haven't watched a lot of Ultraman, but I know watching the first episode of the whole franchise I couldn't help but think "hey, this Science Patrol stuff is pretty sweet, they've got, like, jets that launch submarines, and a cool tape-recorder, I dig this." and "Wow, this fight scene is terrible." Which might be to the show's benefit.
When I watch a lot of toku, I feel like the "plot" parts start dragging on just a bit. With Ultraman, I felt really invested in the plot, and the fights are short enough that they don't drag on. Seriously though, I'm completely unqualified to judge, because I haven't seen any post 1970's stuff at all, so take that with a tub of salt.

I've watched a little bit of the original series (although not as much as I'd like to, due to laziness) and I really dig it. Essentially I'm with Fish Sandwich, though. What I like is that it's not really a proper superhero show - the focus is more on the science police guys investigating the new alien menaces. That, combined with all the awesome model work, really makes the show interesting. Honestly, the part where the show falls down for me is the fights between Ultraman and the monsters - it's all so slow-paced compared to Kamen Rider or Sentai. That might be what's keeping me from getting really into the show.
Best part of the original Ultraman, though? Tachibana Tobei is the chief. |
