Then way later on Ock swtiched minds with Peter and after getting his memories too decided to continue his legacy as Spider-Man but with his own twist, as the Superior Spider-Man. No frigging clue what Venom thing you mean, current Venom is Flash Thompson. |

Here's what happened: Aunt May got shot during the Superhuman Civil War and was placed in a coma. This was because Peter revealed to the world that he was Spider-Man. Because medical science could not save Aunt May for some reason, Mephisto showed up and made a deal with Peter and MJ: Aunt May's life for their marriage. The two of them took the deal, and, at some point, Peter teamed up with Doctor Strange to wipe everyone's memory of his identity as Spider-Man (everyone except for MJ, that is). The spell was cast so that no one would be able to figure out Peter's identity unless he unmasked for them (the spell was broken during a 2012 story arc called "Spider-Island.") This story arc was called "One More Day." It was stupid. As a result of his 12-year-long career as a supervillain, Doctor Octopus began to succumb to cancer. In a final plot, he switched brains with Peter Parker in the final hours of his life, managing to delay Peter long enough for him to die in Ock's body. However, due to a mental connection as a result of the process, Ock experienced the lessons that Peter was taught through his life by a deluge of Peter's memories, and resolved to become a better hero than Peter ever was (he was not). He #@$%ed up, ended up being responsible for a takeover of New York by the Green Goblin and his army, and essentially ran away, dumping his problems on a ghost-Peter who had developed inside of Peter and Ock's shared brain. These events took place in the story arc "Dying Wish" and the series The Superior Spider-Man. They were both kinda stupid. But those are two story arcs. The first story arc of the current volume of The Amazing Spider-Man was pretty great, and that's before you delve into "Spider-Verse." Then there was Peter's tenure as a member of the FF, "Ends of the Earth," Superior Spider-Man Team-Up, Avenging Spider-Man, and Spider-Man and the X-Men. While "One More Day" and The Superior Spider-Man weren't the best, there are plenty of good modern Spidey stories out there. And MJ never became Venom. Not in the main universe. Flash Thompson did become Venom, though. Got his own series and everything. It was pretty cool. And he recently got a redesign: Also, the current Moon Knight series is pretty cool. Man The Superior Spider-Man was such a letdown in retrospective.
There were so many great ideas in that series and some of the issues were really good but overall it wasnt a good storyline. |

Nope, nothing confusing about that. |

The point is that Spidey had some rough patches but was overall pretty good in terms of story.
My recommendation? Start with Spider-Man and the X-Men. There are only two issues out, and everything you need to know is explained in the blurb at the beginning of the comic. |
