Hey guys!
I've been posting here for about a month now -- figured it was about time to make an introduction. I'm Kamen Rider Lucha. The name is derived from my Halloween costume from this year (seen, to the left, as my avatar). I live in Los Angeles and work in the entertainment industry (in an administrative capacity for now, while I prepare my creative takeover of Hollywood!). If there are any Toku fans in the area, hit me up! I've been a PR fan since 3rd grade, but fell off that fan-wagon in middle school when I discovered raw Megaranger episodes on Limewire. My lifelong dream of finding a Power Ranger series that was, you know, actually good was realized, and I only rarely looked back. After high school, I went to NYU and -- the silly idiot I was -- became way too cool for such "childish" things as Super Sentai. Then, about 2 years ago, during the depths of a massively depressing point in my life (unemployed, struggling, creatively unfulfilled), I discovered the robust Toku fansub community. Stripped of the art-school pretentiousness of my early 20s -- and with unlimited amounts of free time at my disposal -- I fell more deeply in love with the genre than ever before. Tokusatsu was like a visual antidepressant for me during this rough patch. It sort of kept me psychologically afloat for a while. Now, as a 29 year old man, I'm not ashamed to admit I spend hours every week watching grown men and women in rubber and spandex bash each other with plastic weapons. I'm not ashamed to admit Tokusatsu is basically my favorite thing in the world. Kamen Rider and Super Sentai are in my life to stay, and both the adult and the 3rd grader in me couldn't be happier. For the record, here are the toku series I've seen, in the order I watched them: Megaranger - Watched stray raw episodes here and there in high school. Jetman - Had some raw episodes on VCD in high school, but could only get so into it without knowing what was being said. Then, two years ago, I watched the full subbed series. It was my gateway back into fandom. Shinkenger - My first modern series. Despite a punshingly boring mid-section, Shinkenger made me fall deeply in love with the style, sophistication, and energy of modern toku. Goseiger - This series was my first real disappointment. I mean, despite the excellent string of episodes leading up to the finale, Goseiger had me wondering if I really was too old for this stuff. Until... Gokaiger - Gokaiger blew my mind. From the design, the effects, the characters, the actors -- the show triggered every nerdy pleasure point in my brain. After Gokaiger, I knew there was no turning back. Gekiranger - Ugh. Gekiranger. The first toku I actively hated, and the only toku I've utterly abandoned (after 15 episodes). The less said about it and GekiRed the better. Kamen Rider OOOs - Then, I got a little adventurous. "Maybe I should give this weird show about a motorcycle riding bug-guy a shot," I thought. "It could't possibly be as awesome as Sentai -- there's only one dude," I thought. How naive I was. OOOs turned me into a Kamen Rider obsessive (despite a mid-section that's as boring as Shinkenger). Go-Buster - This was the first show I watched as is aired. And I break from fandom trends on this one. I neither love nor hate the show! I think it's got it's good moments and its crushingly boring moments. At the end of the day, I'm like -- this show is pretty okay. Isn't the lack of intense opinion refreshing? Kamen Rider Fourze - Topped OOOs in every way for me by combining two of my favorite genres -- tokusatsu and John Hughes movies -- into one awesome, flamboyant, mind-melting experience. Kamen Rider Kiva - I really don't get all the hate. This show shot fireworks straight into my brainstem. Its crazy mash-up of concepts -- and its steadfast refusal to really explain where anything came from -- hit me just the right way. Sure, the ending is a bit disappointing. And yeah, it's kind of frustrating how many elements were introduced and then completely abandoned. But it's kind of like real life in that way -- we'll never understand everything, and we'll never get exactly what we want, but hey, the ride is fun. I'm currently deep in the middle of the following: Kyoryuger - Love every second of this damn show. KR Gaim - This might be the most sophisticated and complex of the Toku shows I've seen, and I fucking love it. If it keeps up at this pace, it's easily in contention for favorite series status. KR Ryuki - Speaking of sophisticated and complex. I had no idea KR was capable of going so dark and telling such structurally interesting stories. Loving it. Dekaranger - Just started this one! So far, I'm really digging it! So now that you know way too much about me... I'd just like to finish by saying this is easily the best Toku forum out there. You're all such classy folk, and you keep things civil (for the most part). Truly a step above other, more vicious and less tolerant communities I've been a part of. Excited to be here! |

You're all such classy folk, and you keep things civil (for the most part). Truly a step above other, more vicious and less tolerant communities I've been a part of. Excited to be here! I fell in love with Power Rangers when I was in middle school as it took the place of my once beloved franchises that was on hiatus - Transformers. I followed Power Rangers through "Lost Galaxy", and got sad when the show seemed to give up on its heritage. I continued to lose interest and stopped altogether during Lightspeed Rescue. Picked it back up in college to catch up on Forever Red, and decided to go back and watch shows. Joined another forum in 2003 and discovered through a Toy Fair promo flier that "Tommy Oliver" was going to be in Dino Thunder, but the executive producer came on that forum and said he wasn't .... only for us to discover that he was indeed back when the show premiered! And ever since then I've been a fan again. My first Sentai was Dekaranger, but I gave up on it because I didn't have the time to find a way to download it at the time. Stuck to the Power Rangers adaption instead. My first Kamen Rider was actually Fourze, and I fell in total love with it. It was campy and kiddish and I loved every second of it, and the characters felt so fleshed out that I never wanted the series to end. It did have a boring middle-part (10 to 15 episodes of METEOR ALMOST GETS CAUGHT! was a snoozer). Gokaiger got me interested in Sentai, but Go-Busters kind of left me disappointed Catching up on Kyoryuger now and loving every second of it. Kamen Rider Gaim is easily going down as one of the best television shows I've ever seen - yes, TELEVISION SHOWS, not just subbed tokusatsu shows. Anyhow, glad to have you here If you need anything hit me up!

Ahoy there shipmates. My name's not important- you can call me Talisman, since everyone does- I've been active here for about a month, and I figured I'd get around to introducing myself.
As you can see, I'm a fan of Sonic and Fallout- Western-themed mashups have a strange appeal to me. I'm an old-school PR fan, have been literally as far back as I can remember, just now starting to get my toes wet as far as Tokusatsu at large- I blame Wizard and Gokaiger for this. I move fast, think fast, talk fast (if low), have the emotional range of an old shoe, and drink enough coffee to make Agent Dale Cooper look like a wimp. I'm not sure if any of those are related, but whaddya gonna do? Anyway, nice to meet you folks, and I'll try not to step on any toes, though I apologize in advance for any foot-related injuries I may cause.
