I have also been trying to widdle down my collection recently. I have a lot of toys I like that are trapped in boxes, and I can't display them because my shelves are consumed by Legos atm. I have been buying stuff I probably shouldn't *gestures at the 6 boxes of tf tcg they bought* but I'm getting more organized at least.
Edit: Also I do understand that this isn't exactly the same thing... I just wanted to contribute.

I was thinking this morning that perhaps my drive to collect megazords is due to not owning the 1993 dino megazord when I was a child. One of the few toys I asked for as a kid and never got it. And the moment I picked up the Legacy one I noticed it wasn't the same toy as the 1993, and I just continued buying megazord after megazord with a sense of collecting them all. Even the Soul of Chogokin never could satisfy my wants. I ended up obtaining the original Titanus and Dragonzord but never the dino megazord. I wonder if I do obtain it if it will quench that thirst and I could finally stop for good.

Yeah, that happened to me and SO-DO a while back. For Build, I was basically all in, but the trick is learning to cut back, to go "Am I doing this for for the sake of doing it, or because I actually want it?" As Kurona says, fill-a-gap mentality is often pretty gripping, and while there's nothing inherently wrong with it, i it's not for you it's not for you.
Also I got sick of customs fees.

That's a really good rule! I've got a similar one; I forget where I first heard it but I've kept it close to my heart ever since -- leave it for now, and if you've forgotten about it or don't care much about it 1-2 weeks later; did you really want it that much in the first place beyond the initial hype?
Granted, stuff like limited pre-orders (especially on Kamen Rider toys hahahahaha,) can make this a difficult rule to actually put into practise sometimes, but it works especially well for toys you can get locally or stuff on Mandarake or something. It also makes it really nice when 1-2 weeks later you realise you do still want it, and it makes you even more excited for the thing! The other reality check for me was this: About 2 years ago I started making more money than I've ever made in my life. Significant increase in income all around and I did the thing many of us dream of: Bought everything. I completed all sorts of sets, paid above MSRP for out of print goods (hello CSM belts!), impulse bought rare items, and in the end was I satisfied? No. Not at all. There was always something new to chase. A collection I thought was complete would expand to more (for example, all the lead Heisei riders of Kamen Rider Converge, now became Lead + Secondary, and then Tertiary why not? (and now I have Converge Kamen Rider Lazer in bike form and I don't even like it, in fact I hate it). I don't say all this to spite the toys I love and collect. These things have brought me all kinds of joy even if its just to put on a DX belt and do the henshin for 1 minute before sneakily storing it away for another month. But those toys aren't gonna be there for you when you're heartbroken, need someone to talk to, or had a bad day at work. They aren't going to change your childhood past. Focus on your life, goals, and dreams. When you can say you've met those, then reward yourself! |

I feel like we should archive the last handful of posts as a sort of warning to people who want to get into collecting.
I consider myself kinda lucky in that regard, because there's two major factors that stopped me from ever falling into buying more that what I could handle. The first one being the much more important one: Space. I live in a really tiny house, so even if I did wanna buy everything under the sun, there's literally no way I could even store it, let alone display it. Before buying anything I was interested in, I asked myself. "Do I actually have a proper place to put this, especially given my current pre-orders?" The other factor has to do with how I got into toy collecting rather late, and combine that with the fact that alot of my all time favorite characters tend to be on the more obscure side, this leads to the second limiting factor: Cost. Most of my faves are older and more obscure, action figure/merch-wise, so I've had to sit on and save up money in order to get them without, you know, going hungry. Heck, this year might actually be the last year I can expand my collection for a long time, all things considered. That said, I HAVE seen this sort of thing happen in person(although it's a bit of an extreme example). And as an outsider looking in, it was pretty sad. A friend of a friend decided he wanted to start collecting Star Wars The Black Series. That in itself isn't a problem, but as time went on one of each wasn't enough. He had to have every edition of every character. And also multiples. And also other Star Wars merch being released recently because why not. And so on and so on. It got the point he barely had any room in his house due to all the boxes that were coming in. He ended up needing an intervention to sell off a bunch of the stuff he'd been hoarding. So yeah, cautionary tale: There's nothing wrong with collecting, and it can be rather fun, but be careful about it. Last edited by DreamSword; 06-09-2020 at 06:38 PM.. |

I kind of have a similar problem; but personally I'm usually someone who switches out her displays. So I'll keep some figures in storage, keep some out; and then rotate those selections. Some days I'll have SODO Zi-O Kuuga out, some days I'll put up SHF Build RabbitRabbit, sometimes I want to have FRS Ex-Aid out. I don't necessarily want to have everything of mine displayed 100% of the time, and a bit of variety can do wonders!
(also you should totes take pics whenever you update/switch around your display jus' sayin') |

Man I wish I had that option. Almost all of my storage space is full of essentials. Like clothes, blankets, fans for the summer, etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy I'm able have said essentials, but if I ever manage to afford an extension on my(or a bigger) house? Hoo boy.
This is a trap! Don't do this! As I look at my many, many robot toys, I sort-of long for the time when it was a more manageable collection. I'm in a pruning stage right now, since I'd used up all of my display space (6 massive IKEA Besta cabinets I added glass doors and lights to) as well as all of my storage space. It was all stressing me out too much, you know? Getting something was becoming Dead Man's Boots, where I'd need to move an on-display figure into storage, and then try and wring one more cubic inch of storage space out of over-filled bins. Now, I'm being as brutal as I can with my shit. Do I need four colorways of the same figure, if they're all out of sight? Do I need an entire wave of toys if only one or two was fun to transform? Wouldn't it be nice to enjoy these things without stressing about where they're all going to go? There are points when I think about what I'd do if I had less space. Fantasize, really. I'd keep my full collection of Thrilling 30 Springer, let everything else go. I collected every variation. I love that mold. It takes up one little cube of my displays. And, y'know, it's done. I can't imagine Takara or Hasbro are going to do some new deco for an old figure, especially with them having a G1 Springer recently released. How nice it would be to have a neat, reasonable collection. I'm not quite at the point of doing that, though. I'm being a little smarter about my purchases, turning stuff over faster. (A friend runs a second-hand toy shop, so selling stuff to him hopefully helps his business while cleaning up my messes.) I'm still buying new stuff, but I'm okay letting it go at a certain point. I'm learning to be honest with what are All-Time figures and what's, like, a casual fling. There was a period where Selling A Toy struck me as, like, heresy. How could someone do that?! It's like admitting you made a mistake! Now, I get it. It's okay to flip a figure after a few years, because you got to enjoy it for a few years. That experience, it doesn't get sold when you sell the figure. Anyway, long story short, all of this talk is pretty universal. We're all trying to balance our enjoyment for our collections with things like space, money, reality. I think we've all got good days and bad days when it comes to it. Perspective is good. Talking about it like this is good. I think everyone needs to do what they feel is best for their situation. If collecting is ever stressing you out, take a break. It's all just stuff. There'll always be more stuff.

I'm going to go ahead and say that part of the reason I went into collecting overdrive the last couple of years was because I suddenly, without warning or even knowledge, lost EVERYTHING at the start of 2018. So I just started grabbing left and right without really stopping to consider how and where it fit. Hence I've got a bloated collection of Fate figma and a bunch of Build stuff and... I really don't have that much attachment to Build, honestly. I'm fairly happy with how I've been regarding Toku and Figuarts, but things are cluttered now and I'll likely be trimming fat in the near future.
Honestly as long as I have the closure of letting things go on my own terms, I'll be fine. And at least I got my freaking couch.
