Pretty self-explanatory, who is your favorite ranger from each season of super sentai you have seen. If you wan to elaborate, go ahead. It makes for good discussion.
I am going to only list the seasons I have finished and the current season. Sun Vulcan - Vul Eagle II Takayuki. He brought a breath of fresh air to a very dull season. None of them were great, but he was the best they had. Bioman - Yellow 4 Jun. I thought she was the best female of the three that were on it. The guys all kind of seemed the same to me. Maskman - tie between Red Mask and Yellow Mask. Takeru and Haruka had the best story lines I thought. Akira was cool too, but after his arc, he didn't really go anywhere else in the show. Liveman - Yellow Lion Joh. He loved, he laughed, he kicked ass, and even though he was just as smart as the others, he also had this "didn't belong" sense to him. Almost like an underdog. I enjoyed what he brought to the team. Jetman - Black Condor Gai. Derr. I don't think there will ever be another sentai hero like Gai. He smoked, drank, cheated people out of money, and was a womanizer. He was a man's man (in regards to a soap opera) and a great anti-hero that was not a sixth. Zyuranger - Tyranno Ranger Geki. His story had a lot of drama woven into it with finding out about his brother, his real parents, the parents he thought were his real parents, and the end of the Burai story was sad. If you didn't drop a tear when he screamed "Nii-san!!!!" right before the credits, then you have ice in your veins. Dairanger - Shishi Ranger Daigo. First, ever tension he did was uber intense and his story being told through a love story was different. I also enjoyed how serious he took being a Dairanger from the get go. Kakuranger - Ninja Black Jiraiya. The end to his quest was insane. You will never see another fight like that on tv, let alone a kids' show. And he made me laugh throughout and had some good fight scenes. Megaranger - Mega Pink Miku. The entire cast was great; they meshed together really well. But Miku was cute (still is) and that is what gives her the win. Gaoranger - Gao Yellow Gaku. He was an intense leader, but quickly and gracefully took the SIC position when Kakeru came along. He could have been bitter, but adjusted well. The other rangers were pretty bland, in my opinion. Hurricaneger - Hurricane Red Yousuke. He was part of a three-man underdog team and led them well. When he did lose the leadership position, his justification for being leader was that he always stood in the middle. Lol. And he was a likable character. Abaranger - Aba Red Ryouga. Until the end, he fought for his friends and always took care of his niece. I thought he was a great leader and didn't really see himself as a leader; just another member of the team. Dekaranger - Deka Green Senchi. Sen-Cyan was awesome and a good break from Ban and Hoji competing all the time. Magiranger - Magi Pink Houka. I didn't really like the team or the season until the last twenty episodes. Houka was goofy and always turned into crazy stuff to hide. She made me laugh, so she gets the choice. Boukenger - Bouken Pink Sakura. She should have been the leader the entire season. Chief was okay and cool at times, but when he felt embarrassed or lost his cool, he really lost it. She always seemed to have a plan and kept it together. I enjoyed that. Gekiranger - Geki Red Jan. How can you not love the tiger boy? And his final story arc was heart wrenching. The best writing of the end of a season in a very long time. Go-Onger - Go-On Red Sosuke. I thought the whole cast was goofy and all brought a different angle at the same thing (which I didn't mind), but the way he carried himself in the show, his stance and confidence, made it easy to root for him. Shinkenger - Shinken Red Takeru. I know a lot of people don't like Take-chan, but I thought his story was great. Since he was a child, he was told to pretend to be this person that he could not imagine himself being. He fought to protect the world alone and didn't want other to die on false pretenses. Being Tono-sama was a burden for him and as he grew with his team, he understood their reasons for fighting more and trusted that if anyone died, it would not be in vain. I think he had a ton of growth as a character and he is also my favorite ranger in all of sentai. Also, Shinkenger was my first sentai season, so there is that too. Goseiger - Gosei Red Alata. Alata was not a traditional red ranger. He was empathetic, compassionate, and willing to let others lead when their strengths proved to be the best option for victory. I know a lot of people think he was too weak, but he defeated Dereputa on his own, twice and deflected that blast from Buredorun while in his civilian form. The last three episodes of the show, he became a real badass and it was a nice change to match the stakes of the show. Gokaiger - tie Gokai Red and Gokai Yellow. Marvelous and Luka were ruthless, but also cared a ton for the people they protected. Luka would do anything for money and valued it greatly and Marvy-chan was the same in regards to the greatest treasure. They brought just enough attitude to counter Ahim and Doc's kindness, Joe's quietness, and gains insanity. Go-Busters - Stag Buster Beet J. Stag. J was a great fighter and the best friend and compliment to Jin. I felt bad for him at the end of the show; more so than the other rangers. He was also great in all the VS movies he was in and the returns special. Kyoryuger - Kyoryu Blue Nobuharu "Nossan". His jokes were corny, but he was a good guy that cared for his family. I really wish he could have gotten his happy ending with Candy, but it wasn't so. I think there should have been a spin-off featuring him and Ryuji. Two old man, blue rangers; could be amazing. I wish his story could have been better explored without having to link Daigo to it, but that is the way the entire show went. ToQGer - ToQ6 Akira. The best at the dead pan humor I have seen in quite sometime. I know that most of his jokes are just his awkwardness, but he was great. He also had development that fit his character, I thought. Ninninger - So far, I have only seen up to Shinobi 21 and I like Kasumi the best. Most of the focus has been on Takaharu, but she is the real problem solver of the team and is the better ninja, but not the best fighter, if that makes sense. I still hope she gets to be the Last Ninja, but Takaharu will probably get it. I hope I am wrong though. |

I'm going to stay simple and just name names from the series I have seen from start to finish and from those that had rangers I truly loved (for example, I didn't like anyone in Turboranger, so no one will be listed):
Bio Yellow (2nd) BlueMask Red Falcon Yellow Five Black Condor Dragon Ranger Ryuu Ranger or Shishi Ranger (this is a tough call as I also love Kirin Ranger) Ninja Black King Ranger Green Racer Mega Blue Ginga Green Go Red Time Pink Gao Red Shrukinger Abare Killer Deka Yellow Magishine Bouken Pink Geki Chopper Shinken Green Gokai Red Beet Buster Kyoryu Gold And so far, Momo Ninger is the only character in the show I can enjoy. Not every one of those I have chosen is because of how much character development they have. Sometimes I just enjoy a ranger that is entertaining to watch and has great choreography and weapons. Pretty interesting topic, Red5 Here I go.
Sun Vulcan: Vul Eagle II/ Hiba Takayuki: Overall, the only character in the show I found really interesting. As soon as he took over as red, the show improved a lot. He seemed like a competent and friendly leader and man, the episode where I escaped from the boat with the bomb was one of the best in the show. Liveman: Blue Dolphin/ Misaki Megumi: The only female team member and a pretty neat female character too. I like how she was smart and strong, yet at the same time gentle and protective. It was really touching to see her fighting to get Rui back. Jetman: Blue Swallow/ Hayasaka Ako: Aside from the super-catchy cup-noodle song, she was very memorable for combining both the tomboy and cute youngster archetype in one. She was a very positive character and I especially how much she always helped Raita. Zyuranger: TyrannoRanger/ Geki: Geki was a strong and inspiring leader. He always supported his team and valued them a lot. Also, his story with Burai really made him a very human character, how he broke when Burai died but overcame his despair to save everyone. Dairanger: No one. I found none of them really striking, tbh. Though I found TenmaRanger and KirinRanger pretty likeable overall. Kakuranger: NinjaBlack/ Jiraiya: While at first I liked both him an Tsuruhime about equally, at the end of the day, Jiraiya deserves the crown. I really liked how both his social and his ninja-background were rather unique and intruiging. Megaranger: MegaPink/Imamura Miku: I loved all the Megarangers, but Miku was just such a cutiepie, I always loved her a tad bit more. Also, her crush on Shun was really a fun little plot to follow. I was almost sad that they didn't end up together at the end of the show. Gaoranger: GaoBlue/ Samezu Kai: Like Miku, he also gets the cute bonus. I found his friendship with Soutaro incredibly adorable and liked his overall cheerful personality. Abaranger: AbareBlack/Asuka: To me, Asuka had the best backstory of all the Abarangers (which doesn't mean the others weren't good). I really liked how he partly acted as a mentor and as a regular team member. And he is such a loveable daddy! Dekaranger: DekaGreen/ Inari Senichi: Sen-chan was wonderful. He was overall so calm but had this weird, goofy personality that made me like him instantly. Also, his Thinking Pose was hilarious xD Magiranger: MagiShine/ Sungel: When I first watched Magiranger, my favorite character was Tsubasa, but last time I watched the show, I found myself to like Hikaru-sensei a little more. He was both very serious and strict, but also caring and responsible. I love how far he would go to help his students out and overall, I found him to be the most impressive character in the show. Bonus for fancy hair flipping. Boukenger: BoukenBlack/ Inou Masumi: While I usually like nice characters more, but as for Masumi- I really liked him for being rather mean xD His attitude was rather cool and it was great to see how much he cared for Natsumi. Gekiranger: GekiBlue/ Fukami Retsu: Fancy bonus part two. I just enjoyed how he was super-artistic and smart and couldn't stand how different Jan was xD And his side-plot with Gou was pretty neat. Go-Onger: Go-On Black/ Ishihara Gunpei: He's a dork. And that's why I liked him. It was so much fun to see him act cool but totally failing at that and being as goofy as his teammates. Shinkenger: ShinkenBlue/ Ikenami Ryunosuke: And my love for gooy characters strikes again. I just love how awkward Ryunosuke is. At the same time, he was super-skilled and took his task very serious. I also liked how he was just always being himself, no matter how weird he was. Goseiger: GoseiRed/ Alata: Alata is my favorite red of all time because he was so unique. He was gentle, cheerful and easy-going, but also a strong leader and an amazing fighter. I especially admired his willpower that made him overcome all the hardships he faced. Gokaiger: GokaiSilver/ Ikari Gai: He was just fun. It was great to have a character you could identify with as a team and I really liked that despite his crazyness and his tendency to be a comic relief, he ultimately became a full-fledged, beloved team member. Go-Busters: Red Buster/ Sakurada Hiromu: I had a hard time deciding here, because I also like Ryuji a lot, but overall, I like Hiromu the most. He was pretty serious and rough most of the time, but his gentle heart and his great sense of justice and responsibility made him very likeable. I also liked his relationship with Nick, how they were a great combi but sometimes teased each other. It felt like a pretty authentic friednship. Kyoryuger: KyoryuViolet/ Yayoi Ulshade: I thought of Ian too, but overall, Yayoi is still the character I can relate to the most and I loved seeing her whenever she appeared. Yayoi was much like me, a perfectionist and someone who felt like she had to fulfill everyone's expectations. I love how overcoming her insecurities and her realization that she chooses her path for herself ultimately gave her the power to transform. Toqger: Toq#1/ Suzuki Right: Right was so much fun. He was sort of like a combination of the classic happy go-lucky red and Alata. He was goofy and easy-going, but in a fight, he was fully concentrated and a pretty good fighter. Much like Alata, Right valued his comrades more than himself and him deciding to let them go home so they can live their lives was just heartbreaking. Ninninger: Akaninger/ Igasaki Takaharu: Unpopular opinion incoming: I love Takaharu. His awkward crazy personality is so much fun to watch and makes him pretty adorable. So far, I also liked the concept that he was the one who trained the longest and that he is the one most serious about becoming the Last Ninja. Also, when Kinji was still trying to kill him, I found their fights every episode ridiculously entertaining. I'm a bit amazed at how many Red and Blue Rangers I listed here xD |

I haven't seen much Sentai since many lost my interest early (Liveman, Sun Vulcan, Magiranger, and Boukenger are the main 4). So I'll just list what I can.
Jetman: Yellow Owl/Raita. The fat guy was my favorite. A man who wants to live a simple life raising crops is forced into action because he was one of the few who could do so. I enjoy watching characters afraid of their enemies rising up for the greater good. While he may not have been the most story relevant (2nd to last, only beaten by Ako), his focus episodes were the best. (Aside, I know Gai is generally seen as the best, but aside from the very end, he was token jerk at best, and borderline unlikable at worst. While he did have a few episodes to make him interesting, he just wasn't a solid character for most of the series) Dairanger: Either Shishiranger/Daigo or Houohranger/Rin. I enjoy Daigo's love of the world and all life on it. His arc with Kujaku helps showcase this along with strong characterization for him. His only real failing is that his episodes also tend to have too strong of an environmentalist message. Rin is a character that starts strong, but just averages out. I enjoy her focus episodes and her significance to the story is hard to ignore. Kakuranger: Ninja Black/Jiraiya. This was a hard one between him, Sasuke, and Tsuruhime. However, the OG ninja cowboy wins out in the end. His serious demeanor in the beginning contrasted the rest (Who were all raging jackasses) really well, and his poor Japanese skills was great. As the series became more serious, it just helped further as his story arc was well done and tragic. Megaranger: MegaBlack/Kouichirou. This one is really the first that was just through process of elimination. The Megarangers were just idiot high schoolers with generic traits. I do think MegaSilver is fun, but only when unmorphed, so I just went with Kouichirou, the leader. Dekaranger: DekaBreak/Tetsu. I enjoyed a lot of the Dekarangers, but I think what pushed DekaBreak to my favorite was his main story about encountering the one who killed his parents. Gekiranger: All of 'em. ALL OF 'EM. It's too perfect! GekiRed/Jan for my most favorite (Since Rio isn't technically a ranger, but an "Other Hero"). His story of being a jungle kid in normal society isn't original, fair enough, but they did it right. How he lost his father and the story that comes soon after is just heart breaking. His attitude and attempts to remain forever optimistic is charming and brings a smile to my face. And the story with Rio. Oh god, the overarching story with Rio. It's sublime. Goseiger: GoseiKnight/GoseiKnight. Header turned ranger. Already cool. However, his standoffish attitude towards the heroes is why I liked him. Not because he was an asshole, but because he was working towards the same goal, but the Goseigers weren't as efficient at it. As he lightened up, we got to see bits of humanity (For lack of a better term) and he became a true part o fthe team. Gokaiger: GokaiRed/Marvelous. I'm not really big on any of the Gokaigers, but Marvelous is definitely my favorite of the bunch. I'm not a fan of cocky characters, but he carries his own charms. Kyoryuger: KyoryuGreen/Souji. I hate this show, but Souji was one of the few good things about it. His growth was what made me interested. Being a loner, a swordsman in training (Despite being a borderline swords master), and just his overall attitude just worked for me. Of all the Kyoryugers, he was the one that felt like a real character, and not just a caricature of character tropes. He grew and changed, becoming more accepting of his friends, learning how to improve his abilities on screen and over time, and he was just the only interesting one.

This is such a good topic!
Here are mine... MASKMAN - Yellow Mask/Haruka. Haruka is the only main character who didn't annoy the crap out of me. In fact, she ranks high on my all-time favorite sentai character list, despite starring in one of my least favorite shows. Her sensitive tomboy character was unique, strong, and appealing. JETMAN - The easy choice is Black Condor/Gai, for all of the reasons Red5 mentioned. And I agree, Gai is awesome. But the more interesting choice is Red Falcon/Ryu. Ryu goes through so much shit in this show. He starts out as this ideal-red paragon, but as he faces tragedy and emotional torture, he loses his way, unravels, and goes to some pretty dark places. I'd say he easily goes through the most growth of the five. Plus, Gai wouldn't be nearly as awesome if he didn't have Ryu as a foil. So I'm going with Ryu. DAIRANGER - Tenmaranger/Shoji, I guess? This one is hard because I feel like all of the Dairangers are pretty dull, character-wise. I f-ing love the show, but these guys aren't really the stars of the story. They're more like facilitators for growth in those who surround them. If we expanded beyond the Dairangers, there's a plethora of characters I would choose as my favorite -- Jin, Kujaku, and Kaku are all complex and fascinating. But the Dairangers? Not so much. If forced to choose, I like Shoji the best because at least he's funny. KAKURANGER - Argh. Do I choose NinjaBlack/Jiraiya or NinjaWhite/Tsuruhime? On the one hand, Jirayia has my favorite backstory in all of sentai. On the other, I feel more emotionally connected to Tsuruhime because of all the burdens she faces as the Kakurangers' leader. Since there aren't a lot of ladies on my list, I'll go with NinjaWhite/Tsuruhime. OHRANGER - Admittedly, I'm only 20 episodes into Ohranger. But only one character has stood out to me at all so far, and that is OhYellow/Juri. She's kind of a ruthless mega-bitch, and I love it. She's also the victim of a lot of inconsistent characterization -- but that inconsistency inadvertently makes her a complex, contradictory character. So far, she definitely stands out amidst the cardboard cutouts that are the other Ohrangers -- but a lot can happen in 28 episodes, so my opinion may change by the time I reach the end. MAGIRANGER - I don't like Magiranger at all. But... I do like MagiYellow/Tsubasa quite a bit. He wins by default. SHINKENGER - ShinkenBlue/Ryunosuke. I think. It might be ShinkenYellow/Kotoha, though. I love Ryunosuke's dedication to Takeru and his utter, blind faith in his team. Yeah, it's definitely ShinkenBlue. Or ShinkenRed/Takeru. Or ShikenGreen/Chiaki. Argh, Shinkenger has some great characters, it's so hard to choose! GOSEIGER - GoseiRed/Alata might be my favorite Red ever, if only because he's such an off-center choice to be the leader. Sweet, kind, and unassuming most of the time -- but still a relentless badass when the situation calls for it. Perfect leader for a team of angels. Alata is awesome. GOKAIGER - Wait, no, GokaiRed/Marvelous is definitely my favorite red. His aloof, bad boy attitude masks an inescapable, can't-not-be-a-hero morality. As much as he acts like he's above the idea of being part of a sentai, he can't help becoming one of the best sentai leaders ever. I think Gokaiger has the franchise's strongest cast of characters. I love them all so much that if any of them were on another sentai team, they'd probably be my favorite. But of them all, I especially looooove Marvelous. GO-BUSTER - BeetBuster/Jin. A mentor-hero who hides his profound inner pain and guilt with wacky humor and hijinks? Sold. And oh, hey, this actor turns up twice on my list! Hiroya Matsumoto for the win! KYORYUGER - KyoryuBlack/Ian. An ice-cold ladies man with a tragic past. Ian is just about as cool as sentai heroes get. TOQGER - ToQ 4/Hikari. He's the only member of this team with a brain, which is a huge plus. I also dig his loner nature, always standing slightly apart from the group like he's annoyed by all of their tomfoolery. Plus, he's cute as hell. I just want to squeeze the misanthropy out of him. NINNINGER - This is the easiest choice so far. MomoNinger/Kasumi is an archetype-busting classic in the making. Brilliant, funny, sweet, ruthless, childlike, kind, devious, and willful in equal measure -- Kasumi is like a whole sentai team smashed into one character. It was a hard choice for me between Beet and Stag Buster, too. They're such a good pair, it's really difficult to separate them. Ultimately, I prefer Beet because he's a lot more damaged. |
