Depends on the deck. There is no perfect ratio because every deck is different.
Generally, though, you rarely want more than 5 traps, unless your deck is efficient enough to run a lot.

Just learned Matsuzaka aka Takeru/Shinken Red appeared on Suda aka Philip from Kamen Rider W's radio show again and more Yu-Gi-Oh talk ensues.
This is the third time this happened. Never have I thought Matsuzaka could make such an impact on this radio show with Yu-Gi-Oh alone.

So, thanks to irl circumstances I tried playing Yu-Gi-Oh again. After reading up the rules on how to play to remind myself... I then found out that the game had undergone radical evolution since I last played it way back in 2003 and my old mat isn't even relevant to the card game anymore because they completely changed things so that there are "Extra Monster Zones". Also turns last a ridiculously long amount of time as people can chain summons to bring in ridiculously powerful mosnters turn 1 should they get a good hand. And it's become moreso about getting in as many monsters as possible to wipe your opponent's life points out in one go rather than chipping away at it as per the original game.
Meanwhile my Blue Eyes deck with only one of most cards because that was what I had is now outclassed because it doesn't have enough consistency to do what it's supposed to and more modern decks suppress it incredibly quickly. So I might have to buy that new Rokket deck that's coming out.

I still collect the cards now and then but I don't play. The game has become convoluted. Has been for some time now. The show is even worse. There's just no cohesive narrative or proper structure to either. I just accept it for that it is and enjoy what I liked about it when I was younger aka nostalgia.

As someone who does actively play the game (Though only at a casual level), I think most people exaggerate far too much on how the game has advanced.
Yes, there are new ways to summon monsters. But it's very, very simple. White cards? Tuner and any number of other monsters on the field. Add up the levels. If it equals the level on the white card: You just synchro summoned. Black cards? Two (Sometimes three) monsters of the same level. Boom. You just Xyz summoned. I feel most people just get overwhelmed because the game they last played in 2002 has advanced in the last 17 years. So with so many new mechanics, they write it off. Yu-Gi-Oh has gotten much faster, and there are far more options now. While there is no doubt that it can be very overwhelming for someone who last touched YGO during the GX era, I think it's a very fun game that only grew to be more enjoyable with the additions. (I'm never going to defend Pendulums, though. Those generally were convoluted and poorly implemented)

I did try to go back into Yu-Gi-Oh around 2014 and I could not get into it. I stop caring about the series in 2005 when GX came out and they changed a lot since I last played the game. I always like how Yu-Gi-Oh was a fun and simple card game to play compare to Magic. I sold off a lot of my old cards a while back and got a good amount for them.

I sometimes get a couple booster packs or a cheap starter deck every now and then when I am in a store. I would play the game more if I had people to play with.

I felt Yu-Gi-Oh advanced at a natural pace. Hell, the beginning of the game was one of the most stagnant card games ever. Only relying on big numbers, 5 total effect monsters in the game, and a mixed pool of some of the best and worst spells and traps, most often, once a player gets a monster with over 2000 attack on the board, unless the opponent drew either Raigeki, Change of Heart, or Man Eater Bug, it was game over.
I honestly feel old Yu-Gi-Oh was the most luck based, since it was just "Who's opening hand had the better defense" and then "Who drew the Summoned Skull?"
