Strong toy sales are part of the reason why they keep making Transformer movies. I'd like to think the same thing applies to here with a largely merchandise driven property like Power Rangers

Isn't strong toy sales the reason they keep making Cars movies? I heard Cars merchandise sales like crazy.

I think it was pretty good- it reminded me of Thor and IM 1- because their sequels had alot more action, but they're both really good movies for starting points- so I see the same process possibly happening for PR.

40+ for the film this last weekend is very good. Keep in mind that a lot of movies do 40+ at a similar budget... we are just used to Transformers, DC, Marvel, and Star Wars doing insane money. Also important is the audience scores. The film is getting A ratings from moviegoers and is getting good word of mouth. Conversely, Ghost in the Shell and Baby Boss aren't getting that good of word of mouth (Baby Boss is... okay, word of mouth-wise, but Ghost in the Shell is just getting beaten up due to whitewashing claims as well as people being turned off by the style). If I had to guess I'd say Beauty and the Beast will remain #1 next week, Power Rangers will end up with a strong second week to have it barely edge past Baby Boss, and Ghost in the Shell will flop HARD, being seen as a Speed Racer-like failure. |

It is going to be interesting to see how Japan reacts to this movie.

It's been interesting reading the difference of opinion on this movie's performance between the forums (not just PR centric ones) and industry websites. The industry is pretty happy with the results and feel it could launch a series while forums are a lot more analytical in their pessimism.
**SNIP** Long story short, the movie will make money. In fact, by next week, I'm confident the rest of the advertising budget will be covered. The question going forward will be, is the movie going to make enough money to justify a sequel? There are a ton of factors to keep in mind, not least of which is Lionsgate hurting for a new franchise and if they see potential to do something better with a sequel, that could justify it for them. But, again, this also depends of the foreign market vs how well it does in the US. There are still plenty of international territories where it hasn't premiered, many of them huge box office earners (cough--China--cough), so the weak international take this weekend isn't too much to be concerned about. Another reason they keep making Transformer movies is their consistent, record-breaking international box office numbers. |
