So the new series has begun and it's being subbed weekly on Crunchyroll, let's talk about it!
The first episode of the show was fantastic. The quality was noticeable throughout and it seemed like the episode had a ton of budget going for itself. (and some great effects work) Our main hero seems unlike any we've ever had in Ultraman before. I think Mebius comes somewhat close, being a little out of tune with the planet's customs but Gai kicks it up a level. As I watched the episode and specifically that scene at the end between Gai and the SSP I felt like I was watching Doctor Who – the somewhat eccentric alien along with his companions. If this is the sort of idea the show is going for, I'm all on board. We're getting a few mysteries and tragic backstories set up right off the bat and that's such a good thing. The first scene of the episode was dark and gives you a sense of Gai's failings. He's clearly a more seasoned and careful fighter now so I have to wonder if any of what happened in the past will come back to be a deterrence throughout the series. Jugler's also an interesting villain, the guy knows something about Gai that alludes to a darker nature. (unless he's outright talking about the first scene) As menacing as Jugler seems, I don't believe he's going to be our final enemy – I wanna say there's someone else pulling the strings. Compared to X's first episode it's difficult to say which I enjoyed more. There was a ton of build up going into both shows – X being the first multi-cours show with an uninterrupted run in over 10 years and Orb being the 50th anniversary, they both did a lot of things right. As far as the characters go, I'm enjoying Orb's cast more just based on episode one. I'm hopeful I'll enjoy them more than the X characters (who were mostly fine) just based on the fact that it's a much smaller cast with livelier personalities who can potentially get some more screen time. X also set up an interesting mystery at the start of the show that, overall, wasn't worth the payout but just from this episode alone, Orb's story could potentially be more long lasting. Long story short, the episode was a ton of fun to watch. The characters are fun and vibrant, the action is great, there are teases at a larger story and connection between our hero and our foe. I'll be eagerly awaiting every episode each Friday. (also, points for those Twister and Superman references) |

This was an awesome first episode. Gai just has this aura to him that's great he reminds me of Akira from ToQGer mixed with I want to say Superman. He just has this great superhero feeling to him. Also he's a bit weird in a good way with some of the things he did. I love the SSP it reminds me of Kamen Rider Drive merged with Kamen Rider Ghost lol. The three of them are kooky and fun. The smart one reminds me of Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory. I am intrigued with the dark mysterious guy with the evil version of Orb's morpher. The fighting was awesome and I loved that Orb used some of the original UltraMan's moves. Very solid start for this show and can't wait to see more of the crazy stuff Gai does.

I don't have a Crunchyroll paid account, so I'll end up waiting a week to see this. Really looking forward to it, though.

I have a bit of a question. I haven't ever watched an Ultraman...anything, really, before, but I am curious about the franchise, especially as the last series was quite well received from what I could see. Do you guys think Orb would be a good place to jump in? Would I be missing something or confused about anything?

I liked the first episode, but I'm afraid that the SSP will become really annoying. They are a bit too silly for my taste.

Orb uses cards of past Ultraman to transform, and I'm sure some of them will appear later in the show. X was pretty much the same in that regard. Same goes for classic monsters, these appear frequently as well. It's fine though, you can easily read up on past shows and since the characters in the show don't usually know the old characters either you'll get a short introduction of them. I say go for it. |

Well, tokusatsu in general is never really super continuity heavy unless something is a direct sequel. I think all you really need to know is "There were monsters on Earth in the past and Ultramen fought them". It looks like this isn't set in the main continuity but one where various Ultramen all fought on earth in the past.
It is the 50th anniversary, so there will be callbacks to stuff I'm sure, but it's also Tsuburaya's first show in this new time slot and I think they'll make it easy enough for viewers to get into. Quote:

Also, for those that like Easter eggs, each episode is going to have a pretty subtle reference to a moment from the franchise's past and I'll be serving up translations of that from Tsuburaya's website on a weekly basis. |

For anybody, like myself, thinking we had to wait a week to see episode one.... apparently you don't. I just watched it on the PS$ and I don't have a crunchyroll account. Checked the website and it's open to everybody right now.
as for my thoughts, I wasn't big on the fusion concept personally but I liked it. Gai seems pretty interesting so far. But he fels like a younger member to the Ultras, calling them -san and basically saying "please let me borrow your light." And yes the little nod there was pretty cool. As for the SSP, not quite sure what to make of them yet personally. But I think the scientist one may get annoying if their not careful. And the Uncle slash actual attack team member was just sort of there but it's only the first episode I'm sure he'll get fleshed out a little more as the show goes on. as for the apparent villian I wonder if he has some sort of connection to the woman we saw in the cold open. |

First episode of Orb was fun! I like Gai and the SSP, they're goofy. I hope they interact with each other more, I do like the "Doctor and his companions" idea.
Maga Basser's cool. Always nice to see new monsters. |

Just finished the first episode and I really liked it. The cast is engaging and I like the idea of focusing more on the supporting characters while the actual hero remains more mysterious so far - reminds me a bit of Nexus in that regard. Gai himself seems fun from what little we've seen - there are a lot of shades of Zubat in him and that is a show I will always welcome homages to. I also really liked the CGI work with all of the storms and the actual fight between Orb and Maga-Basser. The show is off to a great start and I'm excited to have another new Ultraman to follow.

That was my main fear going into this one as well, particularly with the Shin character, but they came off as being fun to watch. Like, I felt as if they were an actual group of friends. I'm hoping that a much smaller cast allows them more screen time and development than usual.

You know I have to say that was pretty entertaining. I haven't cared much for Ultra in the last few years. Not since Ginga bored me to tears. But Orb seems very promising so far. Hideo Ishiguro is already more memorable in one episode as Gai then he was in all of his appearances as Kai in Den-O. The first episode has the right amount of energy, Mystery, & action to satisfy me. Though as usual the goofy civilian characters will probably wear thin very soon.
