Celebrity deaths are always strange for me. I very rarely feel the kind of impact others do, aside from a few- Carrie Fisher, Chester Bennington, and Chris Cornell all come to mind. And now him. And... I really can't explain how I feel about it because the man was a very complicated figure. He was simultaneously a representative of Power Rangers as a whole at its best, and also at its worst. Everyone here, myself included, has had thoughts on him ranging from The Greatest Ranger to That Showboating Jerk and everything in between and beyond.
But knowing he's gone, is... like a chunk of the night sky has gone out. Or say that you've spent years living on the same street, and there's this big house out on the corner, visible from just about everywhere near by. You don't know who, if anyone, lives in it, you don't know who owns it, but it's always just been there. And one day you leave that street, move away. And then, years later, you come back, and that big house is gone. You don't know how, or why, and none of that really matters because the fact is that it was there, and now it's not, and now your whole world feels empty because you remember so clearly that it was there. That's where I'm at. The world just feels emptier now, however I felt about him. I just hope he's at peace now. Cannot stress enough, check in with those you haven't heard from in a while, ask questions if needed, but listen when they need an ear. Remember there are resources like 988, and other networks. You don't have to take on that load for others, but sometimes even just knowing someone is looking out for you is enough to pull back from the brink.

I don't usually care about celebrities dying and only 2 before these past few weeks impacted me.
The first one was MJ, second one was Carrie Fisher... The third one was Kevin Conroy and now...JDF... I mean, sure, I never met him and I would have loved doing so. Suicide as a concept is something I don't understand, I cannot understand why someone would want to end his own life no matter how grim the situation is. But...I feel sadness to see another part of my childhood being gone. Completely outside of all the dramas, I liked what he brought to Power Rangers even after I stopped watching it. I loved his dedication to the fans. I'm not blind, I know money might have been involved but...I cannot help but feel sad. Also, I don't care how he lived his personal life, it's...personal, he is human and he is bound to make mistakes. May the power protect him wherever he is now. |

This has all been a little strange and I've been uncertain where to place this mentally.
I learned of it yesterday when I went into work (one of those who does go in from time to time on Sundays) and learned about it from a co-worker. I immediately had to start looking and even then things were still in the "Hope it's a rumor" phase. It quickly became clear that it was not. Another friend would share a text not long after regarding the news. I did have the ability to see him at a convention. It felt odd cause there was an agent or representative or convention organizer who went up to those in line and tried to ask us what we were going to ask JDF. I never understood the reason why. I also think a kid was invited up to the stage to join him. A recent convention I went to was supposed to have him in attendance, but he cancelled so he could supposedly work on the fan-film. There have been things about JDF over the years that leave me a little uncertain as to how to feel about him. Times he was understanding and amenable and times when he was just an extremely problematic person. Personally, as far as the franchise and the character are concerned, I don't share the "Tommy is the GOAT" sentiment that most in the fandom share. All that said, I know that this is a significant blow and I don't want to take anything away from the fact that someone has passed on. I also hope that this might bring increased attention to pressures that lead to suicide. I didn't see this coming as far as JDF was concerned cause I don't think I fully knew or understood his bouts with depression, which suggests that this was a constant struggle for years which might not have been addressed as he might have needed, a concern I personally share since I've had my own bouts with depression and uncertainty and mood swings and been incapable of finding the right therapist. Don't dismiss your mental health! It matters even if others tell you otherwise! |

What's shakes me down to my core at the moment is the alleged method of which JDF took his own life. Not too dissimilar from Robin Williams just 8 years prior. Two people I admired growing up gone in such a fashion. I just came across a distasteful meme about the subject matter that made my emotions elevate. Not because I was mad at the meme or the person posting it. Laughter and mockery is a coping mechanism for some. No, I just keep seeing the imagery of the method used in dreams/day dreams of as a possible outcome to my own inevitable demise. As someone who struggles with neurological divergency and anxiety it would be a lie to say I have never had suicidal thoughts. The thoughts of being alone being usually the strongest which I can speculate might have been on JDF's mind at the time. A lot of us get too busy with our own lives we never stop to see how those around us are doing. Humans are social apes. We need physical contact with others of our own species to show intimacy that's not always sexual in nature. Platonic cuddling, hugging, and just being close with those can mean a lot to those who are starved for human contact. Therapy and medication is not always the answer. Some times it's just being there for your fellow person letting them know you aren't alone and you aren't weird for wanting human contact. It baffles me to see how Western society has made intimacy exclusive to monogamous romantic relationships. And in my opinion is one of the many causes contributing to mental health issues today. There are many other factors I can only speculate as to what might have contributed to JDF's decision to take his own life that I won't elaborate on. It's just not the time or place. Point is I can relate and it's scary. Please make sure your friends and family never feel neglected.

It will be short :
But what you said, I completely agree with you. You have to care about the wellbeing of your folks, friends. Most people forgot that with the digital age. |

Been a Power Rangers fan literally since Day One, and when I woke up and saw on Facebook that the news was legit, I was absolutely heartbroken. He was my favorite Ranger out of all of them, and I actually dressed up as Tommy?s Ranger personas TWICE IN A ROW for Halloween; Green Ranger the first year, and White the next. So yeah this definitely hurts. (Also thanks to Dormamu for posting the number you can call if you?re ever feeling this way, they?ll always be there to help you)
RIP Jason David Frank AKA Tommy Oliver, arguably the GOAT of Power Rangers. May the Power protect you always. EDIT: Also sharing this tribute pic here I did on Sunday that I shared on Twitter, Facebook, and in TFW2005 (which is why Optimus Prime is in the picture, since JDF actually appeared in a Transformers show, voicing Emissary (Cerebros’ Headmaster) in the “Titans Return” part of the Prime Wars Trilogy web series).

Still trying to process the fact that he is no longer with us. I'll be fine, but still sad that he had to leave us like this. Rest in peace Mr. Jason David Frank. You may have had your flaws(who doesn't?) but you are still my childhood hero and will surely be missed. Thank you so much for being Tommy and being the legendary ranger that you still are.
