I am relatively new to Tokunation. I would like to have this forum as a way to discuss what Tokusatsu shows are the best, and witch are the worst. In others words what to avoid and what to watch. We can also talk about our experiences with the show.
I would love feedback. |

I would love feedback. If you started watching toku because of power rangers, then sentai might be a starting place for you to see the differences. Kamen rider tends to be much darker even for a kids show and if you like that then you should check it out old seasons on sites like kissasian. |

Not exactly sure which is worst to best because I haven't watched a lot yet, but I can definitely tell you some shows from darkest to most light-hearted.
Dark: Garo, Hakaider (a spin-off of Kikaider) Medium: Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Kikaider Light-hearted: Super Sentai, Ultraman Of course, earlier Super Sentai shows were pretty dark (you know Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers? In Super Sentai she is a child-hating devil worshipper known as Witch Bandora, but don't let that get to you, it's explained why she hates kids in the latter half of the show). On what to avoid, maybe Kamen Rider Ghost? A lot of people on this forum downright hate that show due to lazy writing (but, that's up to your discretion. Personally, I was amused by it). If you want to get a crash course on Super Sentai, I recommend Gokaiger (a superior version of Power Rangers Super Megaforce), which introduces you to the first 34 Super Sentai that came before it. If you ever get confused as to which show/character/whatever is which, there's always the wikis. |

I don't really like handing out recommendations blindly because at the end of the day I think your own personal tastes are the only thing that can really decide what you're going to like or not. I mean, I'm a huge fan of Kamen Rider Ghost, myself, so believe me when I say opinions vary on these things. My advice whenever someone asks a question like this is always "whatever sounds interesting to you probably will be", so if some show catches your eye for whatever reason, I say go for it.
That being said, there are some very solid, generally well-liked shows I can easily recommend to just about anyone. First up, the "New Generation" Ultraman shows from the past few years are all great. X, Orb, and Geed in particular are all very worth your time if the thought of giant monster action mixed with compelling drama and above-average production values appeals to you at all. They're conveniently available on Crunchyroll, and at around 25 episodes each, they're also much less of a commitment than the usual 50-ish of a lot of other shows. For Kamen Rider, I think Double is still the gold standard, being a purpose-built back to basics series with a neat detective angle and a good balance of light-hearted comedy with more serious elements mixed in. As for Sentai, Gokaiger is absolutely one to check out. It covers a lot of the franchise's history while also remaining totally accessible and fun on its own merits. I can speak from experience here too, because it was also the first Sentai I ever saw. It's hard to get more specific than that without knowing the kind of shows you're into, or how much experience (if any) you have with any of these franchises, but hopefully this helps.

Definitely would say for Sentai, to start with Gokaiger, since it's a tribute season it gives a great sampling of each Sentai that precedes it. You could then branch out and pick which ones you want to watch from there.
For Kamen Rider, I agree with the Fish Sandwich, Double is amazing. |

Now if you have watched what TheSituAtion187 and Fish Sandwich recommended, and wanna see older shows(late 80s being the cutline), try these.
For super sentai, Liveman, Jetman, Zyuranger, Dairanger, Megaranger, Timeranger, Gaoranger, Dekaranger, Magiranger, Shinkenger. For rider, BLACK, Kuuga, Agito, Ryuki, Blade, Den-O. For ultras, Dyna, Max, Mebius. AND THEN Nexus. Not because Nexus is bad or anything, but the three shows I put ahead I feel like capture the classic more brighter feel. Nexus is a slightly darker show in comparison.

Personally speaking:
Some of my recommendations: Kamen Rider Kuuga (Has a very X Files feeling, honestly no show has the same grit or feek) Kamen Rider Blade (Beginning is rather slow but it picks up pretty fast) Kamen Rider Kabuto (Honestly the best looking Rider show and while Tendou is a controversial protagonist I feel that Kabuto's cast is the strongest part of it) Kamen Rider W (I feel it's only real issue is bad CGI which let's be real is a staple for toku outside of Ultraman these days) Kamen Rider OOO (Lots of heart and knows how to handle it's cast, though the subtitles available aren't the best) Kamen Rider Fourze (Very heartfelt season, knew what it wanted to do and did it very well as far as I'm concerned) Kamen Rider Build (Fantastic writing that is able to both tell harsh messages and find a way to make you laugh with the comedy scenes) Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger (Mostly dumb fun but it has one of the most unique dynamics for the Sixth Ranger and the main villain is incredibly dark in terms of concept) Jyuden Sentai Gekiranger (Easily the best Sentai I've seen when it comes to the story, good action, characters and writing outside of the elephant character) Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (While it's an anniversary season, you can enjoy it and understand what makes Sentai special with it. Fair warning though, it does spoil Jetman's ending if you plan on watching that) Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger (Despite what people will tell you about this the show has a loveable cast who's a joy to watch while there's plenty of fun gags throughout the show) Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger (Rather basic and has issues with it's plot, but the cast really sells it, having a very unique Sixth and was what I started Sentai with) GARO, original series (As it's made specifically for a mature audience it feels very different from the shows previously listed. Also, nudity warning and such) Ultraman Orb (Very strongly written show which had amazing visuals and memorable scenes) Shows to avoid though? Uhhhhh, here's the shows that I didn't like Choujin Sentai Jetman (I dropped it halfway through out of disinterest and it's uhhhhhh very obviously a product of it's time with how it handled stuff like Gai imo) Kamen Rider Faiz (Honestly I don't remember anything of it but it's writing is infamous) Kamen Rider Decade (It's an anniversary season but made different versions. I'm fine with the decision but I couldn't enjoy it. Tsukasa, the protagonist is a hoot though and toku fans on twitter seem to love him) Kamen Rider Gaim (I feel Gaim completely misses the mark of what Kamen Rider means as the writer didn't truly grasp what made his favourite show Ryuki what it is, I feel the only reason people say they love Gaim is because "Ooooh it's DARK and GRIM and EDGY! Not like those BABY Rider shows! This one is SERIOUS!") Kamen Rider Ghost (I couldn't care about anything but I dropped it after episode 17 or so, considering the episodic nature I'm inclined to try it again as I saw it while it was airing) Shuriken Sentai Ninninger (This show had good promise but it's need to focus on Red Ranger constantly hurt the show as it went against it's own messages as unlike Kyoryuger the other rangers rarely seemed to get any screen time. I dropped it around episode 30 or so out of boredom. That being said it had a surprisingly strong message about anxiety in one episode) Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger (Two words: Missed Potential. The two team gimmick was exciting but the show got desperate because of toy sales being lacking and focused almost exclusively on the Lupinrangers which is a shame because the Patrangers were rather loveable despite rarely being allowed to do anything) I'm not an expert on all of these though, there's still so much more to potentially watch, even outside of Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Ultraman, the Metal Heroes franchise in particular is highly praised too and there's a LOT of stuff worth watching before the 2000's which I haven't been able to get to

Everyone's already thrown out the more popular shows, so I'll throw out some more obscure recommendations.
1. Tomica Hero Rescue Force and Tomica Hero Rescue Fire. An attempt at making a none official sentai and quite successful, with it's own unique spin on the formula, especially since they are rescuers first and formost and beating the bad guys is only one way to rescue people rather than the primary goal. 2. Daimajin Kanon. A modern reimaging of a popular movie series. It's much more of an emotion drama in a toku setting, but incredibly good with lovable character that you wish you could actually be friends with and a surpisingly serious theme of being betrayed by those you loved and how to move on (or not in the case of the villain) afterwards. 3. Legend Heroes. A South Korean made toku that is simply amazing from begining to end. A mix of a Kamen Rider Ryuki like concept of a big battle for a wish combined with Super Sentai like mecha battles and managing to make do without monsters in the normal sense. |

I'll throw another series into the recommendation box, Madan Senki Ryukendo.

But it does have some interesting ideas, I suppose. If you can get over the terrible acting and awkward writing. |
