Yup, with all the cons that have been coming to a close, for those that have gone to them, tell us about your first. It could be anything, from Star Trek, Anime, Dental Equipment Trade show....(well I bet the boot girls there were interesting...)
For me it was back in 1998, Otakon, before it hit the Baltimore Convention Center...I was 18, and had never encountered the convention life style. I was blown away at the costumes, the toys, all the stuff I had read about on BBS boards (it was 98 people) and of course the *ahem* lack of costumes as well. I must have blown over $500 in useless stuff. If I was lucky maybe 6 hours of sleep...did the hook up thing...all that. What blew me away though was the comadre among the people. Complete strangers all becoming friends. Seeing arguments, my first instance of true fan boy nitpicking...oh it was amazing! I did the convention scene between Otakon and Katsucon until I was about 24, even had Viz base a t-shirt off one of my Ryoga cosplays...Did the very first Magfest, and one Botcon. Now at 33, just not my thing...well...maybe if my daughter gets the bug lol... So what about you all? |

Comikaze, November 5, 2011. I wanted to go to Anime Expo the summer before that, but couldn't, since I had to start getting college stuff. It was fun, I bought a One Piece Chopper Hat, and some comics for my friend's birthday. I hope to go again this coming year, I saw some Figuarts (Kick Hopper, G3 were some of the ones I can remember) and Figurise (Ichigo and LunaTrigger) that I think I wanna get. And this year, I will have the OOO Driver and a possible Eiji cosplay ready

Setsucon, this past February. It's a pretty small convention (but hey it's run by students, I shouldn't have expected much), but because I had heard about all these massive conventions and the fun they are it was incredibly disappointing. There wasn't a whole lot to do and I'm not the most social guy.... Had some other friends show up eventually so I could stop just badgering the one friend who was staffing the event, but still.
Though I did run into some people with a small table advertising another convention (Tekkoshocon). They were the only toku people there that I could tell. Got to mess around with a Mobirates and Fourze Driver. That was actually almost a highlight. Well that and Kyle Hebert roasting the live action Dragon Ball movie. That was funny. Then I did buy a Luffy hat and get it signed by his current American voice actor... That was cool. So I guess it wasn't aaaall bad. Just a lot of boring in-between moments. Really I think it was the tiiiiiny dealers room that was the most disappointing. |

My first was just Japanfest in Atlanta. It's a pretty neat con. I got a cheap Diend mask there
My older brother told me that the man performing magic tricks at the cafeteria there was actually a pretty famous Japanese actor. He wasn't toku and I never remembered his name, but I found that little tidbit of info pretty funny It was more "General Japan", and it's not really big for gamers or anime fans, but it was pretty nice for what little gaming and anime paraphernalia they had. And I totally got jipped out a free shirt during a trivia contest there! (The question I failed was "True or False: Taro is a popular middle name in Japan." The problem being that Japan doesn't have middle names, but the implication of the question is that middle names do exist, 'Taro' being a popular one, so I was a bit confused and I had 10 seconds to answer :I)
